Dress code??
by Vijayachandran on Aug 10, 2006 03:21 AM

Yes this does work for Indian IT companies with orthodox management. Now a days most MNC has an informal approach on dress code. It is not what you whear, but what you do matters!!!

Mr. Ramchandran's article looks like it has been lifted out of some text book in dress etiquette. I doubt our man has worked in any company in India.

He should write articles about school children and their uniforms.

Vicky,
I think you should get a life.

What is your problem if someone wears shorts to work?

If you dont wear, you should not have a problem.

Loser!

And what about Ladies!
by sridevi on Aug 09, 2006 08:16 PM

This article only talks about power dressing for men in the IT profession...ANd what about women! Don't women too make up a sizable proportion of the IT workforce? Now how about dedicating an article exclusively to discuss power dressing for women?

Dressing for work: Pure bull excreta

I find it extremely amusing to see the dress-specialists routinely pushing the necessity of "perfect" dressing to bring that extra dynamism in career. As a 8 year old veteran in software-industry, I can claim truthfully, that dressing never made a penny worth of difference to my career or anybody else in my friend circle. Of course you should put on some clothes, that's all. [Who knows, no clothes may have far more impact than the business skirts and formal-wears ;-)]

dress code

Dear Friends,

IT industry is just yet another industry , relatively new . As far as the job involves presentations, adding image, developing client's trust or confidence in ownself or in the product or in the company ..... it is equally imp to consider what would be appropriate; but mind you who show themselves to be extra smart / modern , that dress code alone wont bring any success or wont fetch you a job but surely it will get you the acceptance and attention that you need to present your product , paper .... So why not take just the good thing from the article .... I am not expert on dress code and so welcome such article. YOU YOUNG " DARYA ME KHAS KHAS " kind of guys look at at Bills, Gates, Andrews, Georgs etc dress appropriately , dont just show off !

I work in the IT/Tech sector and guess what....

All the interviews I have cleared till date are the ones in which I wore shirt, jeans & trainers.

And failed in almost all the interviews where I wore formals.

In core techmology sector, formal dressing conveys that you are not up to the mark in the technical department and are trying to make false impressoins.

Especially since the majority of ppl who take take tech interviews do so in T-shirt, jeans & trainers :)

Who has given this guy his consultant license? He is recommending wearing Jacket & Tie in India, the sunny place most of the time to IT people. Come to any good IT company which is in product development and people attend meetings in Half pants & 3/4ths and give presentations while their daughter is sitting along. What matters is the performance and not your attire, Mr. I-Know-All brat consultant. Give this advice to the consulting companies and not the real IT companies.

Hi Atul,

It is true that what you say is really what happens in most software companies. But the way of dressing is an integral part of one's personality. It might be a different story that you don't have one.

It is true that that the first impression is always the last impression and the way you dress up for an occassion says a lot about you, your attitude towards your work and the quality of work that you do. Essentially, what you are refferring to is a facility given by most companies to relieve their employees from the tensions of dressing up formally and concentrate on their work. But we, as employees, have taken it for granted and have started abusing this facility. And another thing, it takes a lot of self discipline to dress up formally for your work place.

Yes Man, You are full of crap. It is geeks like you who have ruined decent dressing in workplace. Why don't you just sit at home and crap than talking business. You are a disgusting specimen in the industry. Remind you, most of the IT companies are fully air-conditioned and wearing a jacket or formals presents a well groomed company and brings respect to the company.

What happens to you Atul? The article is for the IT professionals. Do you like your colleague to come in a round neck T-shirt and exhibit his well-built neck and muscular arms to a client.

Do we lack time to shave or money to buy good decent attire to work? Can you accept a temple priest wearing jeans and T-shirt to offer prayers in a temple.

Why should not an IT professional conform to some acceptable guidelines?

Take the ones which is acceptable/suitable and leave the rest.

Shantha Kumar.

my frds are in top nothc companies...nd guys there go to office in 3/4ths ........nd r performing well....

of course if client is visiting then u need to dress up properly ...but for normal project meetings , review meetings with ur manager....no need for that

I second Atul. I have never seen any guy in India IT industry who wears full business attire to office. What the writer suggests suits people in the sales and marketing field who meet with prospective clients and have the need to 'buy' business. Readers, how many of you really wear what the writer suggests for team meetings, review meetings etc? Don't
try to project a wrong image.

On the other side, neither do I agree with few other comments which entirely contradicts the write-up. It does matter but not to the extremes. Any neat, tidy dressing (for instance, no flashy dressings) should do the job.
