cat and prestige-Surajit
by SURAJIT DEY on Mar 03, 2008 04:03 AM

It is true that in such a fast moving and capitalist society a MBA from IIM is a degree most coveted one.Even in marital and love life it guarantees sucess. But is it the reality. We all dream for a equitable society but it is making the opposite. We have been selling like products ,higher placement ,higher prestige.Arts and artistic interests are frowned upon as bewokuffs.Even those who learn history, polity or sociology are rendered as feminists.CAT should have a proper process in place to look beyond IITs and NITs.Only than can we can achieve equity by recognising diversity. It is as much true for genes as much as society and nation.

surprisingly true

well who else can understand the topic better than a non engineer grad...not from a well known college.. with just average acads.
after standing amongst top 0.5%of the CAT aspirants, I was denied the opportunity to be a part of ivy league only for the reason that I hadn't proven my competency before...

The Question comes why there is so much stress on an exam like CAT where chances of non engineers are only 20-25% (class of 2006 IIMC had 213 engineers out of 249)
Isnt the hype more because of mushrooming CAT coaching institutes....?
neways after everything else, it has to boil down to final success in corporate world, whether you make it good with 4 yr grad course or w/o that

It should be yourself, your interests to decide . Not any Tom Dick Harry. Hint: If you can convince atleast one person that keyboard is a mouse go for marketing. If not finance.

idiot
why engineers crack CAT?
by idiot on Feb 23, 2006 11:40 AM

well, thats bcoz they dont have a life!!!!

even i have cracked the CAT, and somewhere i feel my work life balance is highly skewed in favour of work!! its sad! in engineering you ahve to spend sleepless nights mugging useless irrelevant stuff, copy assignments and make them feel like they are original! its a difficult job(saaza-e-kaala paani) . compare this to an arts or commerce college, its like watching kuch kuch hota hai , ppl going to movies, doing tp (time pass) , hardly any tensions.

now if one such poor engineer who has worked all his life an one stud from commerce whos wondering which movie to see in the week before CAT, defintely its the engineer whos going to suceed.

Engineers are not smart, they make the best slaves thats why they are so popular!

chow!

I do agree that the US's process of admission to its B-Schools is much better. But, that's the USA. They have a much more credible underlying undergrad education system. Our undergrad education system simply lacks credibility. From a given information that "a student is enrolled in so and so degree and so and so college and s/he has got x% marks or x GPA" one can make out nothing about the fundamental knowledge s/he has. That's not the case in the US. IIMs don't operate in a vaccuum. They are a part of the entire educational structure and their selection process should be viewed in that context. Considering these constraints, IIMs are probably doing the best they can.
