How good are India's engineers?

Why single out engg. - where was the opportunity in any field for higher standards generating one extra rupee - for all these years?

If there is only one sarkari airline with fixed rates & no competition for profit - can we expect best of customer service in the Indian air space?

It is only now that the liberalization has led to open up manufacturing from license raj ...and now see the Indica car or Bajaj Pulsar bike, supported by smart finance schemes is incomparable value offered which the japs can't touch!

By becoming MBAs when needed these engineers helped to sustain such local market today- MNCs did not need to bring in gora expats!

The demand for the technocrats is slowly emerging - When our society starts buying luxury goods in main stream like USA & Japan , when copyrights matter - our engineers ( except for few black sheeps) - most will come good , bacause markets reward hard work not brilliance only!

Same holds for Engg colleges - instead of Govt grants and recognition , let them fight as brands for profit- those below marketable grade will naturally wind up!

Quality is definately degrading
by kamaldeep on Jan 27, 2005 11:46 PM

I would rather say IIT still r upto some standard.. i m among one of those .. who myself agree that i m not that quality engineer one would expect. When i see my freinds at IIT or NSIT. there is a big difference... To add on i was in market and the bookshop personal told me that i guess more than 60% engineering students(among the total) come to me for books and return there books at end of semester.. pretty sad state of affair.

Quality Degradation of Indian Engineers: Factors
by sandipan on Jan 05, 2005 10:39 AM

It is indeed right to say that the quality of the Engineers are falling. Colleges without proper infrastucture and appropiate faculty are offering degrees. Engineering colleges come up with the objective of making money not building the nation. The qulaity of teaching faculties are falling beacuse the selection mode is not transparent.
Added to this the criteria of resevation in proffesional studies has worstened the matter.

India's Engineers

I read the article as well as the resposes so far. I am also associated with governance of an engineering college. My comments:

If you really analyse, we also produce about 25000 engineers only, who can stand global comparision.

Excessive govt. controls and regulations have stifled and starved colleges of funds and even teachers. The country has large unemployment, but there are several thousand vacancies in engg. colleges alone! Govts. prefer to spend on security of ministers and their cronies by cutting on staff recruitment in colleges. To keep voters happy, they keep the fees low and prevent colleges from recovering cost of edn. IITs could sustain quality because they are autonomous and do not come under purview of AICTE, UGC, DTE, etc. As govt. controls everything about education, who better than politicians to 'manage' govt & its machinery! Hence, politicians entry into engg. edn.

Why govt. agencies for accreditation? Everyone knows how NAAC grades are obtained.

Soln: Least govt intervention. In US, univ. are private, accreditation is private, quality standards are set high by competition and industry. Free edn. from the clutches of banal & illeterate politicians.

Excellent article...
Its a truth that the number of institutions in India are growing as mushrooms in rainy season..
I thing i have noted is the lack of practical experience for the graduates ..In contrast in America or Europe ,the Academic structure incorporate practical trainings and Internships. The system boost the confidence of the student and increase the knowledge in particular field. In India it should be adapted .Also institutions and Companies should go hand in hand. Also more research and development should be done.

I guess serious research work may be going on in IIT's and other prestigious institutes.if you see an ordinary Engg.College, the qulaity of the student is low compared to the IIT's and other institutes. The difference is more because of this problem.

Teachers should also help students in this regard .?
I would like to read more about the article.....

Not the quantity,quality is important!!
