How good are India's engineers?
by vijay khandare on Dec 10, 2004 07:43 PM

This articles is very impressive & giving message that we must look for overhauling of our Technical Education System. Current system is baseless & not upto the real depth of technility of the subject. We must stop commercialization of education.

totally commercialised education
by prattipati on Dec 10, 2004 05:03 PM

Education, health care and religion in India are almost 100% commercialised. Religion in India is also politicised and criminalised to most extent. Those responsible most for all these are very much amongst us in the form of statues all over India !

Responsiblities on the shoulders of AICTE
by Savitha on Dec 10, 2004 09:35 AM  | Hide replies

Even I was planning to make this an issue in the rediff column. It is truly accepltable that the quality of engineers in India is weakening over the years.I,myself,am a lecturer in one of the self financing institution in Tamilnadu.Teaching was my passion,I did my P.G. degree from Anna Univ. only to take up teaching. Two years since I took up teaching,i now repent for having taken this profession. It is a real shame on us to tell that the government bodies in India prefer shirking responsibility to taking lawful action on the culprits, just out of sheer laziness and want of money.Had the amount spent on satisfying the demands of individual to avoid facing problem spent usefully on improving the infrastructure, today,we will be miles ahead of what we are. There are managements to whom setting up engg. colleges are a means of earning crores, spending lakhs.I plead the AICTE,please look after this issue seriously.I suggest teh AICTE hold interrogation sessions on the manangement before issuing the affiliation.NAAC,NBA teams must really commit themselves to why they were framed-Unless these bodies realise the real motive with which they were framed, sad is going to be the future of INDIA!!

If u did Masters from Anna university then think that u gain great experience? What? Instead of blaming the system, u try to be the change yourself. Think on ur own..

Dear savitha,

What your are telling is very much true, i am very impressed by your suggestion to the AICTE. Now days the educational institutions are becoming the finantial institutions with an objective making revenues least bother about giving quality education.
Goverment is not sole responsible for this we are all virtually responsible for this, every ruling govt is giving permission to open engineering colleges with verifing the infrastructure and quality of the staff. After all who make the govt we the people, i think people of india should wake up and elect the eligible persons.

Only 4 states...

"Five states -- Tamil Nadu, Andhra Pradesh, Maharashtra and Kerala -- account for 31 percent of India's population". Hey the writer has only mentioned the names of 4 states! Don't they proofread these before publishing??

Lol...thats pretty funny. First the Rediff people criticize Indian engineers who are more often than not, forced into that profession by their families...Second...the article also proves that even the Rediff people are equally unreliable. If the rediff people want to talk about Indian engineers, then they also better give solutions to the problems and not just mere statistics.

how good are India's Engineers?
by Rajesh A on Dec 09, 2004 07:47 PM

Truly this subject needs a lot of thinking upon. As you will see from figures, the US and Europe together produce only 170000 engineers annually, we produce more than double but what are they doing? Take into consideration the fact that engineering developments are more visible in those countries which are actually producing less engineers ! Are our engineers being utilised to their supposed capabilities? In fact software houses have been known to rate just around 20% of these engineers as acceptable. Japan has the highest engineer ratio but that also reflects on the research and innovations that come up from them.

Indian Engineers
by Amit Mishra on Dec 09, 2004 06:12 PM

These are indian govt. policies, which prevent
engineers to work on nation growth. If other multinational companies can exploit them, why do'nt
govt. In govt. an entry can be at the begining level,
so a engr. having good experience, is of no use of govt. For large number of eng. graduates, now a days rare opportunities are there. Govt. should promote mid level entry.

Private Engineering Colleges
by Rajesh G. Chavan on Dec 09, 2004 05:40 PM

Today we find lots of Engineering private colleges Mushrooming with negligible infrastructure and that to not up to the standards. Most of these Colleges are connected to some politician or the other. Why should politicians interfere in the technical education?
Today we find that most of the Engineers who pass out of these colleges are not having a job or even if they do have a job, it is not upto their liking and their standards. The value of Engineers (what was their in about 5 to 6 years back) has come down drastically. That is the reason why we find Engineers applying for jobs meant for other desciplines. When will this stop?
My suggestion is that the mushrooming of all private colleges should be stopped immediately and the government should plan concrete steps to raise the level & standard of education.

Title needs a little change
by Jitendra Kulkarni on Dec 09, 2004 05:35 PM

Hi,

Title should probably read - 'How good are the fresh pass-outs ?' Cause, these are the individuals who scale heights in conducive environments. Thus the onus lies on the 'system' and not on the individuals themselves. And its upto everybody, every part of the system to perform and be accountable.

Regards.
