MMS USHERED A NEW ERA N CULTURE IN INDIAN POLITICS
by Pradip Mazumder on May 19, 2009 08:28 PM

Joining of two people albeit on an apparently different platforms changed one dimensional political trajectory of India - MMS and Dr. Kalam. Both of them marked lasting imprints in their respective sphere of activities - MMS on economics and APJ on Defence. The forthrightness and statesmanship that MMS displayed during the nuclear deal was exemplary. He was virtually desolate and ostracized yet he came out valiantly. Having said that I think he needs to work more on TACKLING TERROR, CORRUPTION AND SECSSIONIST MOVEMENT IN MANY PARTS OF THE COUNTRY. Harangue is no politics as some political personalities expeditiously used. MMS kept his calm and poise which drew appreciation by the coutrymen who profusely thanked him. I HOPE HE WILL CONTINUE HIS YEOMAN SERVICE TO THE NATION IN THE DECADES TO COME. COMPASSIONATE ECONOMIC POLICY, UNWAVERING DEFENCE STRATEGY, 70 % LITERACY, RURAL CONSTRUCTION SHOULD BE GIVEN TOP PRIORITY FOR NEXT FIVE YEARS.

Dr. Singh will be remembered as the best PM ever in India with most accomplishments and will be thanked the least. He will retire with lot of abuse and name calling by civilised indians. But that is the way Sikhs are. They have been kicked around since independence and are still faithful to the land whereever they go.

Sikh leadership has to be blamed for that. Dr. Singh although a Sikh, is PM first of India, then a sikh and he has demonstrated that.

Fifth column
by Very Far on May 19, 2009 05:50 PM

The loss of both Sri Lanka and Nepal from the foreign policy orbit of India, strategic advance of China through the Nepalese corridor, near dismantling of Indian nuclear arsenal for the civilian nuclear deal with the US,lack of response to the Mumbai terror attack, etc...are some of the accomplishments of MMS.
The PM is like a Fifth column planted by those foreign powers that want to see India reduced to a second class power in the community of nations.

Those who call Dr. Singh, a stamp, yes man, etc.
by Mogumbo on May 19, 2009 05:42 PM

A country is not run by one man or person. There is a team effort behind every decision a big country like India makes. So calling him...is merely ignorance and jealousy. Dr. Singh, Mr. Ahluwalia, Sonia and the rest of the cabinet ministers will run the country well. Please support them rather than foolishly criticizing them pulling them back.

To all idiots criticising Dr. Singh as an economist
by Concerned on May 19, 2009 05:20 PM  | Hide replies

World over it has been proved that raw capitalism or communism/socialism are dead ends. Dr. MMS follows the middle path in economics and that is perfect.

Dr. MMS is politically weak, that is because the great people of India didnt vote for him when he contested as a LokSabha MP. But he is not administratively weak at all.

Infact the 2 biggest events one can think of in India - economic liberalisation and Indo-US nuke deal (for good or bad time will tell), have been MMS efforts even when the sycophants in INC opposed it. That tell you if he is 'weak'.

As for Friedman advocates, I think the current financial crisis in the world has proven beyond a doubt that guys like Greenspan, Friedman (read his book and see how lot of what he postulated turned out to be false) dont after all know what they were talking about fully!!!!

I agree with you. Dr. Singh also heads RBI (PM can overrule Governor), RBI has been declared the best banking system in the world. The recession dint had much effect in India, unlike USA, Europe or ME. Thats the consistent effort of Dr. Singh.

Dr. Singh never called himself a politician. He is a very accomplished, proven world level Economist. And that is what he is best at. The petty political trivial things should be left to Rahul. He should be left alone to do what he does best.

dealing with well meaning Editors
by floatsam on May 19, 2009 05:08 PM  | Hide replies

One of the fallouts of the Indo-US proximity is US papers, who hardly taking stances on what India ought to do and not to do.

There is one such today in NY Times. In this the well meaning Editors but with bit simplistic approach, perhaps with inadequate application of thought and little comprehension of Indian analytical mettle have began telling India what to do and not to do. The inevitable Kashmir issue also finds a place.

This time they have gone a step further, in a way merciful, of advicing not India but India's Congress Party only!

To make a meaningful conversation and keep it going out of such stances requires delicate and far more dexterous handling by Indians.

Advani is a Politician; MMS is a Statesman.

"A politician thinks of the next election; a statesman of the next generation." -- Unknown

* Advani has FAILED to answer MMS's simple question till date.
* What did Advani accomplish for India? (covertly demolishing BABRI MASJID?)
* MMS personal contribution to India is inking NUCLEAR DEAL with Nuclear Suppliers Group.
* And MMS defied Communists to get the deal ratified in the Parliament.

Experts claim nuclear deal a win-win proposition

I feel for those who describe Dr Manmohan Singh as a GREAT economist. As a student of Economics I never came across any of his contribution that can be attributed to the science of Economics. We in India call someone GREAT without actually understanding the real implication of the term, thanks to our benevolence.

@Guest

O thou great student of economics, first and foremost economics is NOT a science. That is why Nobel doesn't classify it as a science nobel, also it isn't.

Now freaking egolomaniac, you have a long ways to go before you dare talk about Mr. MMS economics ability. Dude, you guys are such pathetics jokers, criticising Dr. DDM for his economics. World over it has been proved that raw capitalism or communism/socialism are dead ends. Dr. MMS follows the middle path in economics and that is perfect. I am disgusted that I have to waste my time to defend someone like Mr. MMS from you of all the people.

And clearly you talk about ECONOMIST without clearly understanding the term!

Like with mathematics, you can have both applied and theoretical economists. As a student of economics your exposure would be theoretical economists - to the Keynes or Friedman's of this world. Nobody is calling Dr. Singh a great theoretical economist because that is not what he has dedicated his life to.

Instead he is a great applied economist. As a finance minister and as a prime minister, he has demonstrated a deep understanding of economic principles which he has applied to the successful liberalisation of the Indian economy.

That is why he is considered great.

While you may not have come across him in your studies, here is a sample of responsibilities he has successfuly held over his long and distinguished career as a practicing economist

Governor of the Reserve Bank of India
Deputy Chairman of the Planning Commission
Finance Minister

He has stood first throughout his academic career. He has studied economics at St. John's College at Cambridge Universtity where he won the Wright's Prize for distinguished performance in 1955 and again in 1957. He has a Ph.D from Oxford University, 1962. He has further honorary ph.d's from Oxford and Cambridge.

Now tell me my friend, does all of that qualify him to be called a great economist or not? If you or say your son achieved even 20% of this, would you not consider yourself / him great?
