Congress-2 rule, George Bush-2 rule, anything similar?
by nahsitida on May 17, 2009 04:04 PM  | Hide replies

The way ignorant middle America voted George Bush 2 for his second term, it looks like the Indian mandate to Congress is also a reflection of the 60% population (people who votes) is mostly ignorant to details of governance and growth. As long as they get loan waivers or pay hikes and are made promises (what has happened to many communities since 1947), they ignore the larger trend. 50 years after independence, India then starting growing, what was happening for so many years? even now, people who are best at ruling are branded communal (as if secular/communal are the only two types, there are no castes, no naxal elements, no Kashmir issues, no north-east issues, no terrorist attacks etc).

That is a very smart one-liner.

BTW, you comment, is it a secular comment or a communal comment?

How about this? I just see a lot of similarity in rise of George Bush V/S that of Rahul Gandhi.

What's your comment on this comparison?

Time to rebuild not mourn
by Raghavendra Ravi on May 17, 2009 03:47 PM  | Hide replies

BJP should rebuild itself and it can. After all it has 160 seats in the Lok Sabha which is not small. OK Congress and UPA won, so what?

BJP should focus on good governance in Karnataka, Gujarat, MP, Chattisgarh, Uttarakhand and wherever it has power. Keep opposing UPA in the parliament responsibly and keep moving on. There are a lot of smart people in BJP and bring them to the fore. Advani, MM Joshi, Atalji can all guide without getting involved in direct politics.

In places like TN, work for the next 10 years at the grass roots level and BJP can come in to power - if they work patiently and do not get involved with Kazhagams which are just families who have amassed wealth.

Unite forces in Rajasthan and donot indulge in infighting ( Jaswant and Vasundhara ) .. re group in Delhi and oust Sheila Dixit .. after all the blue line murders delhites still elect Congress / Bombay after 26/11 elected Congress and NCP .. so it is a shameless country - do not believe what people say .. Indians want CASTE and not bijli Sadak pani .. give bijli sadak pani, but manage CASTE and RELIGION - Secularism is a bogus ideology. "minorities" in India are NOT secular .. they are the most communal elements in India. So beware of imposters... as long as people clap Azharuddin is Indian, the moment you file a case against him for match fixing, he will be minority!! Such is our Secularism!!

Like what happened in Bihar, NDA should just focus on states they have, zerorize corruption, work at grass-root levels, build organization with more vigor and substance. make their party so visible and people-oriented that it should in itself become a discussion topic. All ambulances, all emergency services, education, social issues they should be seen contributing. Slowly, but surely these things will matter.

Same time, they should literally survey around why people wouldn't vote as BJP suffers most from the lack of voting. Approach every family, listen to their problems, explain them their rights and most important, just avoid any discussions or debates on secular/communal topic. Distract those discussions to Naxal issues, illegal immigratnt issues, Tamil/SL issues, caste based violence issues, just force the TV-guys to stay away from secular/communal talks. TV guys are funny, they can forget Sikh riots but not the Gujarat riots, they can ignore N.E.India, but can talk forever on Kashmir. There some obsession around certain topics, change it.

TV channels and grass-root organisation, if both are managed, soon BJP should be set for a consistent 200 tally in every forthcoming election. They still have Kerala, TN, AP and WB, so they are NOT saturated, they are more upside than downside in terms of their geographical coverage.

Send some Burnol to Peshwar also.

PESHAWAR: A car bomb ripped through a packed street in Peshawar and killed 11 people, including women and children, near an ice cream shop and Internet cafe Saturday, officials said.

The blast exploded in the densely populated Kashkal area of Peshawar.

‘We were sitting in our showroom when there was a huge blast took place,’ Mohammad Anis, the owner of a nearby car showroom, told AFP.

‘When I came out, I saw fire and smoke everywhere around me. The first thing that I saw was this,’ he added holding out a bloodied severed hand that had been ripped from an arm by the force of the explosion.

I also endorse your views. To add more bjp should concentrate also on AP/UP/orissa. Wait for 10 years but do not make bad frinds who will backstab you. After all we should remember that peoples were telling bjp is dead when they were downsized to 2 after indira assasination. But bjp proved it wrong to coming it to 130 Today it is no 2 party. so let us not be panic, but be with aam public, build party at grass root, correct mistakes. After all indian public does not want cnogress partys dictatorship, but we certainly need strong opposition too.

Perform or Perish
by Premnath on May 17, 2009 03:40 PM  | Hide replies

Usually in indian parlimentary elections anti incumbency of state government is a common factor. In this election most of the incumbent state governments did well like Tamilnadu, Andhra, Karnataka, Delhi, Rajasthan, Bihar, Orissa, Gujarat, Chatisgarh,Madhya Pradesh, Delhi, Haryana, Assam, Kashmir, etc.
Few states like Kerala, West Bengal, Punjab and Uttarakhand seen results otherwise. The defeat of communist party in Bengal and Kerala proved people can't be taken for granted. So the lesson from electorate is loud and clear - They want better governance and stability irrespective of the party.

Good point. These were very special and unique elections in terms of the incumbency factor.

Just wanted your opinion (to Premnath), I am not able to determine what matters(ed) the most?
1) the "election management process"?
2) the real potential a party has in terms of its ability to rule well?
3) the fact that the ruling party has not had any major "visible" flaws in past tenure, which can be realized by the common public?

BJP's voters dont vote
by Tamagna Gupta on May 17, 2009 03:40 PM

I have seen quite a few people in this site coming out in support of the BJP both before and after the elections. Despite of that BJP lost. The reason for that is that the BJP's supporters don’t come out to vote. They prefer sitting in their rooms and writing comments on the websites. Blaming the media and rigging for BJP's defeat is very immature and uncalled for. Please note the average turnout in this election was about 58 %. So who were those 42 % who did not vote. It was the upper middle class and the younger lot. Lets accept that despite the much hyped "Pappu campaign" so many people did not vote. The old and the poor have always voted for the congress only. All the congress supporters please note that low turnout over the years has been one of the reasons why congress has won the Lok sabha elections more often than not. I am sure if the turnout had been above 70%, the results would have been different.

Somehow the #3/#4 front who donated far more seats to UPA than NDA are escaping their share of criticism. I always expected NDA to win 160-170 seats given the fact that they are only based in 2/3 of the country. TN Kerala WB AP BJP just does not exist. So, measure BJP success/failure in the context of their best/worst scenarios.

For a change write something about RJD, BSP, CPM etc. They also lost a large percentage of their seats. Its not just BJP.

BJP lost against christian media and nothing to worry, this party was formed on the basis of core nationalistic values and now will bangladeshi and pro pakis being in majority in most of the states there is no way that it can ever come to power.

what do you mean by loosing "self-respect"? how much do you watch TV? how often they discuss the percentage of seats BJP lost V/S #3 front & #4 front lost? Do you see the bias in their coverage? or all those details do not matter? what matters is only labels of self-respect and generosity?

Show me which debate here talks about CPM or RJD?

Do you understand a thing called percentage? I am saying compared to the BJP's loss the RJD / CPM losses are bigger, but in most discussions BJP is being singled out.

I genuinely did a mistake by saying "how much TV somebody else watches", it just diluted my point and created a distraction for you.

At least show me, how much of debate do you see here focusing on CPM or RJD? Wasn't Lalu a Railway minister in UPA govt?

Come on, tell me which debate/topic shows the kind of "proportion" I am asking for?

I am only talking about BJP discussion V/S #3,#4 front linked discussions and nothing personal this time.

Details/stats/examples preferred, rather than "soure" grapes type of labels.
