BJP has tp blame themself for the defeat. They (specially Advani & Modi) always projected Dr MANMOHAN SINGH as weak prime minister and todays result will make them weak for next 5 year

I am glad that Indian has rejected Luni Tuni candidates except Modi. It is high time that Rediff should ban publication of Raman from publishing his hateful and venom filled articles as they divide Indians based on race, religion and region.

Good for our Country
by satish bhatla on May 16, 2009 05:54 PM

A strong Congress government at the centre appears to be a near certainty. Hope that the new Government shall give good, calm & faithful representatives that are the good combination of youth as well as experienced Leaders (see if they can get rid of leaders like Arjun Singh, Paswan, Maya, Mulayam and Lalu). I hope that the up-coming leaders will definitely restore as well as increase INDIA's GAURAV. BJP should pass on the mantle to younger members who are more broad minded - like Atalji. Modi can be effective only at the state level. It should also become more inclusive to attract more support from the public. As far as my opinion (being an INDIAN) is concerned, The Party name is totally regardless & irrelevant subject to our Politics is in the Public Interest & far away as far as the word "CORRUPTION" is concerned.

We are happy that UPA will get the majority & will not be dependent on the Regional parties. In fact, we require only two good parties at the national level like in USA. The regional parties should not be able to dictate terms to the Central Leadership. Stability has been there in the progress of the Country. It is very essential for the Country and also for the Governance to work without any hassle. We all let us predict in the Interest of our own Country. Vande Matram...

Rahul Gandhi
by roopesh raghavan on May 16, 2009 05:54 PM  | Hide replies

This elections shows the emerging of a national leader called Rahul Gandi. One of the best and right decission by congress was, they had given the charge of UP to Rahul. UP is the backbone of Third front and his compaign in UP helped Congress to smash the backbone of thord front. If you had seen an uprore in Congess to make him PM, cannot be rejected.

this is happening just because elections are conducted during May, becuase most of the educated and middle class people go on vacation (only 45% voting in most of the places) And only slums, muslums, and farmurs voted who are in majority. this trend can change if elections are not conducted during april, may. bjp should put strong objection to this.
anyway, this govt will not last longer...
uneducated and illiterate person should be stopped from voting.

Excellent said Mr. Shetty
There is a criteria for all in Hindustan but no criteria for a political candidate and the country citizens, due to which all the goons and society expelled humans turn to politics and all the illiterate persons are given the right to vote .
This creates the following scenerio
The goons either force the citizens to vote for them or show their money power to acquire the votes.
The illiterate and poor are lured by distributing money, rice and television set and made to vote for this party.
A minimum education criteria should be introduced for voting, than we will see who the citizens of hindustan vote for.

This shows what the right-wing people think. The real fascist thought, that only the influential should decide on the fate of the country, and not the poor and the marginalised. The indian pubic, the massive rural vote, kudos for them as they reject such lunatic and stupid ideology.

the so called educated people can definately sacrifice one vacation in 5 years to exercise their moral responsibilities. people staying in slums or farmers might be illitrate but definately not uneducated. lets stop assuming people under certain economic standards are senseless or have no standing of thier own.

If we look at the history, exedcpt for 1980 and 1984 which happened in winters, all elections happened in peak summers have always benefitted Congress. In 1991 it brought back a limping Congress to power.

In 1977 March, they lost miserably. And in 1999 October, they lost too. Same with assembly elections.

pls no more personal abuses
by Vishal Bahubali on May 16, 2009 05:47 PM  | Hide replies

this is the biggest lesson india could have taught advani. in his greed for the kursi, this man had made such personal attacks on mms (esp. while mms was ill and ailing) -- it became nauseating after sometime. and advani's henchman modi was no better.

now that the slap has fallen on their faces, they should learn decorum and good behaviour. but i doubt even this would help. after all these are just power crazy people who have no other ambition.

Mr. Advani definitely you should have avoided personal attacks.

There were personal attacks from MMS to Advani too. But public ignored. For example he tanted many times in media that "Advani's horoscope is faulty and he can never become PM".

Had BJP won and Congress lost, you would have blaming MMS for saying this.

You are putting a wrong point.Do not express your personal hatred for a person.

Which politician is not greedy? Is MMS or Sonia or Rahul not greedy? Thats why they are in Politics?

The author has put it very right - "In many parts of the country, the Congress is still looked upon as the party of Mahatma Gandhi [Images], Jawaharlal Nehru, Lal Bahadur Shastri, K Kamaraj, Indira Gandhi [Images], Rajiv Gandhi [Images] and P V Narasimha Rao. "

This is the only thing that works for Congress, its a trump card. This is the reason why Congress is surviving and Sonia, MMS et al are still reaping the harvest.

Rest all is just a derivative of the election results. Columnists will always find hundreds of merits in the winner and demerits in the loser after the results. Had the results been in BJP's favor, these columnists would have fould all merits in their favor and demerits in Congress.

Had this not been true, the exit polls would have matched with results, as it happens in US.

What Swadeshi? When did he talked Swadeshi? It seems you are unaware of everything.

SJM was against Advani during NDA rule because several bold economic steps like FDI in Insurance and Telecom sector, disinvestment of PSUs which MMS could not do in his 5 year term as FM(91-96).

It was NDA who pushed economic reforms boldly and laid down foundation of the processes going on. They built a Foreign base from $9b in 1998 to $120b in 2004 against all odds like economic sanctions by West. UPA still does not have the courage to take some actions NDA took- disvestment of Sterlite and Centaur hotels.

What would you say about the defeat of Chidambaram, the FM of UPA. Does that means public has rejected UPA's economic policies. Had MMS fought the elections, he might have also mate the same fate.
