Myth propagated by BJP about economy
by JGN on Apr 23, 2009 09:29 AM  | Hide replies

      Dear Friend,
I have had the chance to assess in detail some of the claims being made by the BJP on the work done by the Congress-led UPA government on the economy, and I think it is safe to say that there is at least one party that adheres strongly to the belief that if you repeat a lie often enough, people will come to start believing it.
In response to 5 big myths that the BJP is attempting to propagate, we have prepared a short document that lays out the facts. The full document is available on: Five Myths About the Economy Propagated by the BJP
The following is a brief summary.
Myth 1: The Congress has "mismanaged the economy and it is in recession"
Fact: The BJP's claim of the economy being in recession is both technically and substantively untrue. India's average economic growth rate during the five years of the UPA government was 8.5%, compared to 5.8% under the NDA. Even in the last year of the UPA government, when the world economy went into recession, India's growth remains resilient (and was higher than it was during the NDA regime).
Myth 2: The Congress led government has "hobbled both the organised and unorganised sectors of the Indian economy"
Fact: The growth rate of the industry and services sectors increased from 5.0% and 7.7.% under the NDA to 7.8% and 10.5% under the UPA respectively. In addition, the UPA instituted landmark programmes for the unorganised sector (such as the Rashtriya Swasthya Bima Yojana for workers) which did not exist under

under the NDA.
Myth 3: The Congress' "fiscal indiscipline has resulted in frittering away the tremendous gains of the NDA years"
Fact: The UPA has actually reduced the fiscal deficit from 6.0% under the NDA to 4.5% under the UPA. The UPA has done this even as it as substantially increased funds for social programmes such as the SSA, NHRM, NREGA, Bharat Nirman, etc. and has given much higher sums of money to all State governments (Rs 544,000 crore more than the NDA).
Myth 4: The agriculture sector (is) "suffering on account of the Congress' gross negligence"
Fact: Agriculture growth rate has actually increased significantly under the UPA government to 3.1 % as opposed to 2.3% under the NDA. for wheat and paddy, for example, the MSP was increased by 71% and 68% respectively. The UPA also implemented the historic farm loan waiver programme benefitting 3.68 crore farmer families.
Myth 5: The UPA Government has given a "step motherly treatment to BJP ruled states" during its rule
Fact: The Congress led UPA Government has given more funds to the BJP ruled states than the NDA government even conceived of giving. The Congress-led UPA government increased Central Funding to the four BJP-ruled States . Madhya Pradesh, Chhattisgarh, Gujarat and Rajasthan . by 63% (increase of Rs 73,824 crore) in its tenure, compared to the NDA government.
As always, please feel free to share this document with others, in order to generate informed discussion and decision-making.
Best Regards

Here's the reason. The first two years of NDA regime was spent repairing whatever harm the Congress and assorted others had done to the economy. When the UPA took over, they got a high growth and good economy which they managed to screw up in the latter three years.

BJP plays communal politics or Congress has divided the whole nation in small pieces. Who was the person, which caused in India, Paksitan & Bangldesh. In all of those years, when Caste system played role in politics and reservation was given to non-needed, it was just Congress.....caste based devision is more dangerous than communal so Mr. Sam you should analyze carefully, who is strong or who is weak....I don't know if BJP will take us to the superpower but one thing I am sure of is that Congress will lead us to the situation, which Zimbabwe or Argentina are now...Your kind of will be last person to come with such kinds of feelings...

Good Luck India

Pawar, think for where you come from, support Dalit
by D S on Apr 23, 2009 09:16 AM

Pawar, stand for justice once, not power. Support a Dalit PM.
Give them the rights and empowerment. It is overdue.
Large part of Marathas have Dalit blood in them as well. Look into your eyes.
If Maya's people gave hate speech, so did Malcom X, that is past. Things can be made better by giving Dalits the right instead of pusing them into Naxal, Commie, secular, mandir, masjid...maoism, etc.

India never had a strong govt, only weak people
by Sharad on Apr 23, 2009 09:03 AM  | Hide replies

India never had a strong govt. It was an amalgam of corrupt politicians, corrupt judiciary, corrupt civil administration, corrupt Police (used by greedy corrupt businessmen) - and NON-PARTICIPATING, APATHETIC CITIZENS. The corrupt group had their way - until the country went almost bankrupt in 1991. I will give credit to the politicians, that they opened up the market to freer private enterprise to recover some sanity. I will give a whole lot of credit to the military, not to interfere with a civilian democracy. Two points that saved our country from not going Pakistan's way. VIGILANT AND PARTICIPATIVE CITIZENRY IS REQUIRED FOR A SOCIETY TO BECOME MODERN AND CIVIL.

logic of strong govt does not work
by Ramesh on Apr 23, 2009 05:30 AM

Strong victory for INC even when on the basis for good work done by MMS would be surely usurped by the dynasty to perpetuate itself. They may even sideline him mid-course on some pretext to facilitate grooming of their heir apparent.

Hindutva in its present format is bad but the dynasty is an obscene option, virtually denigration India. A tottering government dependent on external support is a safer and superior option for India.

Why is Congress silent on Black Money issue ?.
by uday on Apr 23, 2009 12:55 AM

Total FDI since 1991 : 103 billion $

Indian Black Money in Swiss Bank : 1400 billion $

Indian Money in other Tax Havens : Not known

Only the Black Money stashed in Swiss Bank is at least 15 times more than the total FDI since 1991. It means more money has gone out of India since 1991 than what has come as FDI !!!!!!!

Why is Congress silent over the Black Money issue ?.

Interview full of contradictions!
by Observer on Apr 23, 2009 12:30 AM  | Hide replies

Several contradictions can be exposed in Mr Pitroda's interview. I am afraid how big my blog will be if I rebuff all points I can. Jus a few examples:

1. "The problem is that you don't need a government that is really looking at a communal divide."
- Mr Pitroda's imagination that NDA govt was looking at communal divide. We have debated enough and can talk more about this separately.

2. "If we don't have this strong government, we will lose momentum, prestige, and all the competitive advantage we have today."
- China grew faster than India. Again, many developing countries grew fasneter than India. Where is competitive advantage? During NDA rule, India grew fastener than China.

3. "when the US was attacked on 9/11, we said there is no Al Qaeda [Images] or Taliban [Images] in India. Now, perhaps we can't say that."
- Admitting MMS and UPA's failure?

4. "Absolutely. And we have other things to do in the areas of judiciary reform, administrative reform, which we haven't done. As a result, the implementation has been very slow."
- BJP has always advocated for review of constitution which would cover all these. NDA govt had taken the initiative. What was Mr Pitroda's stand then? His pseudo-secular brothers were crying foul then!

5. Mr Pitroda is talking as if India has just got independance and need to build up. What did Congress do in 50 years?

Pitroda is a known Sonia family sycophant. How do you expect him to praise BJP & indict Congress in ruining the nation.

Pitroda was in love with Rajiv's policies and the fact that he gave him carte blanche. Pitroda hopes that he can do something if the UPA helps him. Hence the view in favour of the incumbent.
