Suicide is happening in all over India not only in farmer community. The reason of suicide is varied from section of society. Recent survey from an NGO shows that farmer suicide is less than its population percentage and it's higher in the middle class specially in urban areas.Suicide in farming class does not only reflect the financial condition.

I think this is beyond BJP or Congress because famer sucides occur in Congress NCP ruled Maharashtra also. It is the total apathy to the farmer's conditions which the system professes and the deafening silence from the more fortunate educated classes who may sometimes seek accountability in other areas of governance but never even whimper when their own brothers who grow their food die even when they are solvent. See the above cases, farmers had cash but not the exhorbitant interest

shockingly false.
by GR D on Apr 14, 2009 12:48 AM  | Hide replies

this report is shocking, i am from chattisgarh and there is no such problem as reported in this report. The govt here in chattisgarh is providing all help and benefits to the farmers and poor people.Cheap food to poor, and high purchase price to their yield.Round the clock electricity, adequate subsidy. What more can a govt do? we dont expect them to come and farm on our behalf too.It is the duty of the farmers too to take care of their expenses and to save for rainy days. And most importantly, this report is all false and biased.wonder why its here on election eve.Shameful yellow journalism.

Irony - Part 2
by Chenthil Natarajan on Apr 14, 2009 12:38 AM

Government can lend money to the deserving farmers, who think that without money their irrigation would be at stake which might lead to suicide. The government must bring in legal/armed forces support to the farmers in first hand reliving them from the persons threaten/humiliating/beating them with haste to get huge money as interest. The farmers - govenment interaction shuld be made through the zonal officers. The government must start giving fresh loans with zero percent interest without hesitation to farmers from the first quarter.

After the fourth quarter passed, if a zonal office recieve a complaint/information that a farmer is about to suicide because of draught/ loss in the irrigation, the central government along with the state government should come into the picture and should relieve him from all kind of loans/debts he took after the first quarter. The government should also ensure that they get the loan money back from the farmers who cultivates good and got a good profit.
