Why Amma lost
by Thobey Srinivasan on May 12, 2006 12:13 PM

Dear Mr. Rajeev,

The arrest of Shankaracharya and the harrassment and calumny unleashed against him by the J's Government was a non-issue as far as the Tamils are concerned.
This was proved by the resounding victory of the AIADMK in the Kancheepuram by-election some months back.

Yes, to start with- the Brahmin community did react emotionally to the arrest of the seer. But the TN Brahmins Association issued an appeal to the community to vote for J in the assembly election!

Again in the May 8 election, Brahmin majority constituencies like Mylapore (nearly 45% Brahmins) and T Nagar in Chennai city have elected AIADMK candidates.

Her good governance has erased the bitterness and a sense of hurt caused earlier in some sections by the holy man's arrest.

Her performance hasn't been all that bad though not enough to enable her comeback.

Statistics and Emotion ...
by Jaya Kumar K on May 12, 2006 11:56 AM

Finally the state assembly elections have brought a change in the Tamilnadu government...

In the absence of significant anti-incumbency factor at the start of election process, DMK and its veteran leader, Kalaignar proved better politicians in 3 main areas:

1. Analysing the coalition strenghts
2. Understanding pulse of the public's demands
3. Reminding the forgotten autocratic decisions of the Amma government

Thus DMK emerged victorious in what was deemed the bitterly fought election in Tamilnadu so far.., which shall prove to be a good verdict by the middle / working class. The DMK shall start confidently, yet cautiously...

M.RAJKUMAR
out come of tamilnadu assembly polls
by M.RAJKUMAR on May 12, 2006 10:29 AM

MY VIEWS is that as follows

FIRST- The election manifesto of dmk was one of the major issue for the win win situation of the DMK regimn. The colour to every house and the Rs2/kg rice were the attraction of the manifesto.
We have to keep in mind that this is not an healthy compettion in politics for the politician if the practise is carried on because people will start casting votes for parties who promises to give more facilities to individual and not for the whole of the society but no doubt with respect to the public it is an advantage for the public.
SECOND - DMK led media also was largely responsible for this victory because they had focused each and every problem in a bigger way and also showed that the goverment was responsible for the whole of the issue.
THIRD - Coliation party was the another factor for the victory. The Statitics has done his job and also the leaders and the party workers of the colation party of the DMK led alliance reached all the places for election campign because their leaders were multple in numbers.
IS IT A LAND SLIDE VICTORY FOR DMK LED ALLIANCE
We cannot take this as a land slide victory in terms of number of seat nor the percentage of votes

CNN IBN
by Ramakrishnan K. on May 12, 2006 10:27 AM

I have no reservation in highlighting certain views about you Rajdeep (CNN- IBN). You are one of the highly influential journalists in the recent history. But, may I request you to do some kind of introspection on your analysis. You have the courage of humiliating politicians of parties other than congress and communists. Here again, you proved your biased stand, when during the exit poll analysis, you dare to ask the spokesperson of AIADMK to be available for media after you predicted thumping majority for DMK led alliance. It was a humiliating scene for all we Tamilians. We Tamilians still have the confidence and hope that, JJ will be creating history on showing the responsibility of opposition leader. Our leader is Matured enough to meet the new government and bold enough to go to secretariat even though she is in opposition. Unlike the old man, who despite winning last assembly election, never went to Fort. So, You with your glorified brains, analyze, who is a coward and who is a warrior. We, People of TN know who is courageous and who is not. We don't need you kind of biased journalists views in this regard. Ramakrishnan K, ramkiramki@rediffmail.com, Chennai

AMMA LOST
by johnson on May 12, 2006 10:24 AM

The analysis lacks depth. The election promises of Karunanidhi are completely out of place with present day life in TN. What does colour TV or free cable connection going to matter to a common man? How does a tamil citizen going to get benefitted from these? Are these not just hollow? Is it not insulting a common man? If he implements these, only his goons are going to benefit, not the people. But certainly, Karunanidhi is going to pull himself out of these promises by putting blame on Jaya on poor financial situation of the Govt.and wriggle himself out. Then, who has lost; certainly not Jaya but the people themselves, if they had voted only on these promises as concluded in the analysis. One main point left conspicuously in the analysis is the Shankaracharya case; that amounts to 3 to 4% swing given by the obvious voters against Jaya. Added to this are the audacity displayed by ADMK throughout the state for last 5 years. Not that DMK is an angel; we need to prepare ourselves for another bout of selfish coalition politics without any committment to the public. TN people have lost this election; sadly, we donot seem to have an alernative, but to only lose.

It is a fractured verdict
by Madhava Vemuri on May 12, 2006 10:23 AM

This result cannot be treated as victory for MK...its infact a fractured verdict resulting in coalition government for the first time in Tamilnadu.

Rediff report missed one major point...Amma showed undue interest in prosecuting Sankaracharya...Supreme Court time again questioned State government\\\'s interest in this case...above all no conclusive evidence was produced against Sankaracharya...

I am sure she lost substantial votes because of this...

Also had she tied up with BJP, it would have helped her to some extent...

Why amma lost
by pandu on May 12, 2006 10:10 AM

Putting Shankaracharya behind the bar was not gone very well with forward community in TN. She consistantly played the politics of vendetaa against her all opponents. Afterall political battle is confined during election only not throughout the 5 years of her rule.
