Dr. Cajetan Coelho
We need to fight ignorance, disease and poverty on a war footing !
by Dr. Cajetan Coelho on May 20, 2004 10:14 PM

We begin to realise that every voter in India is closely watching on daily basis the performance of every elected member. Not only that, the voter has become so conscious of his right to vote that he or she also carefully watches the performance and commitment of other volunteers and candidates with a desire to serve. So whether one is elected to serve or one is on the waiting list to serve, he or she is carefully observed for commitment, dedication and service to the people who have been genereous to cast their all precious vote. Expectations of the voters keep growing and that is a good sign to keep every one on alert. We wish all the elected members of the parliament enormous energy and enthusiasm to work hard and fulfil the aspirations of a billion Indians. To the ones not elected it is a wonderful opportunity to keep on working with all dedication they are capable of to make India a powerful nation of happy people who will fondly remember them for ever. Such is the zeal and commitment we look forward to from all our dedicated and inspiring volunteers in the service of Mother India. Let us all wish ourselves a happy and prosperous tomorrow with a dignified place on the planet!

Rigth decision
by Vijay on May 20, 2004 09:29 PM

I think that Mrs Gandhi took a right decision to make Dr Singh as PM of developing country "India". He has shown his ability when he was finance minister, finance advisor, and so on. Hope that he will flourish India during his ruling period. Vande Mataram.

Manmohan & Kalam

Good to know that intellectuals from minority are leading the nation in the 21st century. Could not have asked for better. But do feel ashamed by the dirty politics otherwise.

Deepak D\'Souza
Prez and PM
by Deepak D\'Souza on May 20, 2004 08:04 PM

For the first time in Indian Hisory and probably in the world ; the two topmost executive posts are held by members of minority communities. No other country in the world can match this. Even USA which is a 250 year old democracy has fared badly in this record. Forget minority religious commmunities, USA finds it hard to elect a Black or a woman. Even a Catholic will face a lot of Hostilities before he can take the top post. And Jews despite their numbers in the administrative setup will have to contend with closet anti-Semetics. I guess we have taught them a greater lesson in secularism(How they love to lecture us about human rights). Proud to be an Indian!!!!

Rajiv
Manmohan Singh ,the new Indian PM
by Rajiv on May 20, 2004 07:46 PM

Congratulations to Dr singh for reaching to the PM post although not through election but through selection and compulsion but it is good for the country as the replacement of present NDA government is in a Doctor's hand.

On his views on poverty we all agree with him but the congress party can not evade its failure on this front even after ruling India for so long or is not willing to fight against illiteracy and poverty because it gets strength from it.

With Dr Manmohan Singh who is regarded all over India as a clean and honest and he is highly litrate among all the prime minister India ever had we can hope a good future for India

SANJAY SENGUPTA
New PM - Agenda & Hurdle
by SANJAY SENGUPTA on May 20, 2004 06:53 PM

Dr Manmohan Singh is widely acclaimed by the media and the industry people as the architect of an economic reforms process . However the direction of the economic reform as it stands today , is bereft of human face and is inconsistent with the overall welfare objective of the state . There is a need for course correction and we would like our new PM to pay attention to this.

One impediment to smooth functioning of the PMO is that the incumbent PM will always be inclined to think that he owes his position not out of his own political strength but due to the magnanimity of another person. In a parliamentary democracy , the PM ought to be the most powerful political person so that he can lead the people and speak for the people on his own and not to be seen as a person who is merely nominated to perform a job.

We hope this hurdle will be overcome.
