The batting of the above three has been dismal. Their only utility remained as spin bowlers. In SA the tracks are not spin friendly. So they would be useless there too. So why include them. Seems the Selectors (and Dhoni) has separate yardsticks when it comes to Gambhir and another set when it comes to Y-R-J.
I am surprised to see Yuvraj as part of team despite of so many failures. If he can not score runs on India batting pitches, how is he going to score in South Africa? Poor choice by selectors.....Give another youngster a chance in his place...
To remain in the team one should be Dhoni’s loyal. Everybody knows that some months ago there was some hot word transaction in between Gambhir and Dhoni. It is the only reason that selectors are following orders by Dhoni-Srinivasan & Co. by not including Gambhir in Test squad. Murli’s avg. in last 5 test innings is 32.6 and avg. in test at SA is 14 whereas Gambhir has avg in last 5 test innings is 41.2 and avg. in test at SA is 60.5. Now India team is gradually becoming Team Chennai, at home ground it can be OK but in AUS, SA and Eng. Dhoni-Srinivasan & Co. will get the answer.

Very clever - you chose 5 innings of Vijay to ignore the 2 previous to that (153 and 167). Overall Gambhir has scored only 4000 runs in 54 tests despite being a front ranking player and no issues with place in the team. Vijay is no great but to quote his average of 14 from one test in SA to show him in poor light and glorifying Gambhir just because he is from Delhi is not going to fool anyone. By the way, there are more UP and Delhi players in this team than any other.

Vijay has an avg. of 38.2 and Gambhir has 44.2 showing who is better. As the test will be abroad, in SA, in fast and bouncy pitches, now Vijay has an avg. of 12.5 in fast and bouncy pitches abroad in 4 tests with no fifty at least and Gambhir has an avg. of 40.3 in 12 tests in fast and bouncy pitches abroad with 5 fifty and 2 centuries. As he is not from Team Chennai and not a favorite of dhoni, he is not in the team.
