I don't see any point in this question. Both have had to tackle different problems. The times were different. Game formats were different. Both gave their best on whatever challenges they faced. Lets respect both for their contributions to Indian cricket. Doing a comparison would only be a waste of time.
Any of the Dhoni's supported can give me one example of his cricketing excellence which has given long-term fruits to INDIAN cricket? Good captain is judged not on the temporary wins when he was there but he should create a good team of Leaders & performers who can take forward and continue to keep the team on TOP
Dhoni lacks the statesmanship like Ganguly. He is crystalclearly prejudiced towards CSK Players. Manoj Tiwari and Raina even Shikhar Dawan are far better than those of R Jadeja, Murli Vijay and R Ashwin. Still he makes them sit for paving the way for CSKians.

Ganguly got the services of Tendulkar,Drabir,Sewag,Kumble,Zaheer Khan when their career graph was at the highest level. But see his Captaincy recrd in one day matches. No big trophy came except Natwest.Whereas under Dhonis captaincy India got T20 WC,Oneday WC,Commonwealth cup,Test Ranking No.1 Etc.Even look at the IPL records.Everything will be Clear.Besides he hold no.1 ranking as one day batsman. He is no. 1 match winner for the last 5 years. So Dont be emotional.Give documentary support of your claim.

Teams stregth and quality differnt in both era in gangulys time AUS were unbeatable ganguly led india in to many finals (almost all finals ) but only bcz of unbeatable AUS india could nt won WC that time.
Dhoni was lucky to get weaker teams teams not strong as it was before
dont count T20 cricket in to comparison its luck and lottory

T20 WCup campain: he struggled hard in T20 world cup series to score runs though he scored few 20 and 30's with strike rate of 100 this is useless in T20's and with his carrier strike rate of 110 in T20 he does not deserve to be in team at all (T20's), if you remove Yuvraj's two match winning innings against ENGLAND (6 sixes) & Australia (70 runs) we would have lost the CUP and please familiarize with cricket even today INDIA never performed at par in T20 cricket. So his contribution to T20 world cup is ZERO 2. ODI WCUP: Except for last match finals it was again Yuvraj who is man of series(all rounder) with key contributions from Sachin,ZAK,Munaf,gambhir etc.....
How can you attribute these two wins to DHONI's is'nt it funny?????
what are the great things he did as captain??? Then put Dhoni as coach like in football (non-playing captain) atleast some one else would have scored..........Iam not questioning his ODI credentials as I do respect him as player but was just trying to explain Dhoni was good in carrying what ever has been inherited from Ganguly-Dravid-Kumble

shilpa..u dont know abc cricket too..u just know dhoni won the wc...but back groung you dont know..I will tell u one thing..ganguly is the best batsman before he took captaincy after too he played superb..there is no question of comparison in batting between the two..comparing elephant to ant..and captaincy wise..he brought sehwag to opening..and ganguly got the strongest opposition team...in his era..but dhoni got weak team..and minus is that india didnt have that much qualitative pace attack that time..ganguly is always best
1. before 10 years opposit team standard were high AUS were unbeatable in any part of world . SA,PAK and SL were strong as well. Comparing to them Ganguly had a average team.
2. Ganguly had to build a team from 0, he worked hard , took his time , lot of expirimnets, so some failure also.
3. Dhoni today leading the best indian side , and for his luck teams like AUS , PAK, SL lost their main players and now not that strong team like 10 years b4. only SA is strong team and equal or better than India. So more easy to win now.
Ganguly is best caption india ever seen, no doubt. but as a player i will tell Dhoni is best in world the most useful player in world.

Ganguly had more talented/great players in the team like Sachin, Dravid, VVS, Kumble, Srinath, Harbhajan, Saurav, Sehwag when they all were in pick form.

Thats absolutely fair analysis Pradeep, I also agree Dhoni is the best option to lead INDIA but my only concern was he was not playing fair with his selections probably he do not have much of choice as Sreenivasan is the main culpit because INDIAN captain never as luxury to pick his team (except GANGULY) but he is weird in ignoring good talents like Tiwari, Ipathan, Rahane @ the cost of avg players like Jadeja, Mvijay & Vkumar

Arnab you need to keep your mouth shut why are you playing regional cards man??? Do you remember any player bengal who was continuesly in team inspite of poor performances?????? no doubt ganguly in the only one captain who can pick up or demand his 15 players even against wishes of selectors but he always did it in best intrest of NATION, he always used to back the players to core irrespecitive of region he is only concerned about players Quality....his adamant nature in persisting with impact players like Yuvi,Bajji,zak etc is one of the key things for ODI success. I am from AP(TELUGU) but i respect ganguly for what he has done to INDIAN cricket
