Different yardsticks
by Yogesh Hasabnis on Dec 12, 2012 06:57 PM  | Hide replies

I remember that the same author himself was extremely critical about one other Indian cricketing hero named Sourav Ganguly in the mid of 2005. I believe he too had different yardsticks for different cricketing heroes. Or may be he didn't consider Sourav a cricket hero at all.

Thanks for raising, my heart went out when VVS had been made scape goat, because of 2 stupids Dhoni & Sachin, VVS along RD was keeping the Batting lineup going every one chipped in between, Both have been kicked out by selfish and greedy, now see the current team india status

is dhoni good enough for tests?
by Sunil Vaidya on Dec 12, 2012 05:51 PM  | Hide replies

in last 2 years 2011 and 2012 dhoni has played 19 tests 33 innings 4 not out 859 runs 29.62 average 144 highest 100s-1 50s-7 batting position 7

in last 2 years 2011 and 2012 gambhir has played 16 tests 29 innings 0 not out 907 runs 31.27 average 93 highest 100s-0 50s-7 batting position opener

in last 2 years 2011 and 2012 sehwag has played 15 tests 28 innings 0 not out 889 runs 31.75 average 117 highest 100s-1 50s-5 batting position opener

in last 2 years 2011 and 2012 kohli has played 13 tests 24 innings 2 not out 788 runs 35.81 average 116 highest 100s-2 50s-5

tell me what is the difference between sehwag gambhir kohli and dhoni that mohinder is making such a big noise about?

the stats above clearly expose mohinder. he wants like any regional selector to have players from his region in the team and in important positions. he wants players like sehwag, gambhir, kohli and mishra in the team and as captains or vice captains if he can manage that.
according to him dhoni has no technique etc. to play in test cricket...mohinder if that is so then how do you explain that he has matched your favourite quality test players like sehwag gambhir kohli in stats...that too coming so low down the order...
mohinder you say dhoni is protected by higher ups...so you want to protect your favorites sehwag, gambhir and kohli? If dhoni is not qualified/equipped to play tests even as a player if one goes by the figures of last 2 years then are the players that you are backing qualified?

Thats a good stats and it is good to see that u know how to look at stats, Sunil. How come you dont look at stats when you talk ill about Sachin? How is he any less than these 'greats' of Indian team who should be in Indian team and not Sachin himself?
Sachin: 17 tests, 1100 odd runs, higghest 146, average 36, 100-1,50s-7 ;
Why did u miss out stating his stats Sunil? and does that 'clearly expose' something about you, leave alone Amarnath!

the point is robert things are different when a toddler starts to walk...he falters fells down and gets up and starts running....when old people have difficulties in walking we dont expect them to get up and start running...

do you understand the difference between that of a 2-3 year old who will walk and fell and get up again and start running...compare that to that 2-3 year olds grandpa who may be 60 plus....if he has difficulties in walking and fells down due u expect him to get up and start running? get my point?

will u not view the 2-3 yr old childs falling down and getting up and that of 60 year old grandpa's falling and getting up with different views?

I agree like otehrs that you are good at stats-both in getting them and reading them.BUT i would classify you as a light weight in terms of cricketing knowledge.Have you seen teh difference between Dhoni and others in batting stance, defence, shot selection(forget making) or in a larger perspective TECHNIQUE dhoni was a walking wicket in Eng and dowun under he looked a bit better but definitely not a test match material.AND why do we Indians always go after battingArent you aware Dhoni is the wicket keeper.Do you want me to start talking about his keeping skills!!!and to add to your note Gambhir too doesnt deserve test slot.he too is ODi material(unfortunately)Shewag should bat down the order at No:6 which suits his technique..these are the things Jimmy wanted

Amarnath was after Dhoni's head as a captain more than a batsman. So batting record discussion is irrelevant here.

Faisal, please have your stats correct.
by Joy Gupta on Dec 12, 2012 03:47 PM  | Hide replies

GR Viswanath, with due regards to him as one of the most prolific batsmen of India, didnt' exactly plunder runs in domestic stages after he was dropped from the Indian side. His stand-out performances were like 1 century against minnows Kerala in both 82-83 & 83-84 season, then one century against Hyderabad in 84-85 season and one century against Delhi in Ranji Semis. He didn't play Duleep trophy during this period. In comparison, Brijesh Patel scored more runs in the domestic circuit but he was scared of pace bowling.

For next 4 domestic seasons, Karnataka made to KO stage of Ranji only twice, once lost in PWF & another in SF against Delhi.

By GRV standard, this was not a performance to reckon with especially when his own state-mates like Roger Binny, Kirmani & Brijesh Patel were scoring more centuries.

Rest of the part of your article is indeed correct. We continue to play those who are out of form. In other countries, if a player is out of form for 4-5 consecutive tests, he is rested. But in India, we continue to have faith in him at the cost of the nation.

Here player comes ahead of nation. And for BCCI, money comes ahead of everything.

but the way G R Vishwanath was dropped was cruel for such a great stylish batsman. he was not requested to retire.
