SILLY POINT
by bajrang on Oct 25, 2011 08:34 AM  | Hide replies

"Varun can bowl a bit quicker than some of the other Indian bowlers," said Dhoni. That is the silliest and most discouraging comment one can have from a captain when he can bowl much faster than our military medium bowlers. I think a few good words wud help his fellow Jharkhandi do better next time on.

don't go behind praising one too early - it will pamper him and spoil his career - we have the examples

I would say Dhoni has indeed chosen his words quite carefully. We have seen that young bowlers who typically start with >140 kph go down to 130-135 kph in a matter of 3 years of continuous cricket. This is especially true for Indian bowlers.

Like all the others

Remember the likes of Agarkar, Ishant Sharma, Munaf Patel, R P Singh, Sreesanth? They all burst on the scene with a bang and all disappeared after a couple of seasons with a whimper!!! Why do all Indian pacemen lose their pace after just 2 or 3 seasons? Fast bowlers from other countries become faster, ours become slower

dude..after few season Indian pacemen are fully loaded with enough money and adds.. so they don't need to focus on their bowling pace they just need to focus on money pace...

Let them play for records because whenever thy will play for records it will count as Indian team strength but they need to play together in every match thenonly India will become one of the strongest team in world

should seniors return
by krishna v on Oct 25, 2011 07:48 AM  | Hide replies

we all saw what happened in england, should a sachin, sehwag, zaheer, bhajji return ? it imbalances the team.. the team could well be better off having this young team rather than a sick old boring team, which plays for some records and nothing else.

Agree....the youngster team should be given chances for the future....otherwise what happened in england will happen again.

drawid , sachin, laxman and sehwag looked like fat tree stumps on the english grounds , their mobility and ability to bend down has vanished.

Why is Varun the superman we were looking for?
by Nikhil Shah on Oct 25, 2011 06:19 AM  | Hide replies

Well, it was not the pace that seems to get our attention, but he is a bit crafty. When back in 2000, Zaheer looked crafty but was around 88 mph in India as a youngster.

I think, the fastest ball in a spell comes typically in Test matches in the 4th over. In ODIs he bowled a 3 over spell and was taken off.

Ishant, Sreesanth, and now Yadav were never suitable for ODI in India. With Varun, he seems to be crafty with his reverse swing and was also able bowl some Yorkers.

With his eco rate of 4.5 in List-A and being 10 mph quicker than Praveen, Varun is showing signs of becoming a star where pace is pretty much dibly-dobly, wibly-wobly military medium at best.

We cannot consider 141kph as express, but ODIs are never meant to be that way. It is just his ability to make the batsmen think should be a plus.

If he continues with this trend, the Indian batting will have to chase totals below 300 or even 275 with new comers like Kohli, Raina, Jadeja, Ashwin and Rahane are agile fielders.

India may not have a top order like Sehwag and Sachin who get off on a fliers because the bowling attack and superior fielding will make 260-265 a competitive and defendable score.

Good analysis. But I beg to differ with you on your assessment: "140-145 kph bowling is military medium at the best". In my understanding, these bowlers are considered "Fast" bowlers!

I meant Praveen's pace was slower and military medium.

I was trying to say that Varun can be quicker in Tests and his real pace in ODIs is not a true indicator.

In addition, not all Indian pitches are not consistent. Yadav and Varun have to bowl in the same match to see how much difference we see in pace
between the two.

swing
by Mike Teflon on Oct 25, 2011 05:29 AM

I don\'t think he\'ll get a lotta conventional swing with an open chested action..

Speed isn\'t everything in international cricket, if you can\'t swing it..

Swinging your way all along at 140kmph does hold water.. If he can\'t batsmen will find him out..
