In my point of view Ian Bell was out because he went for a reverse sweep. It was a clean LBW.For India's defeat it is not the reason Indian poor fielding is the main cause for defeat.

ICC will be the last to accept any mistakes if at all they have committed any. The merit (or demerit) of the new Rules should be adjudged by anybody but the ICC. Do you think ICC will admit the mistake so easily? That does not mean that Dhoni may be entirely right either ! Let the debate continue, and the REAL picture emerge!

Tech vs human
by Aniruddha Ghosh on Mar 02, 2011 04:42 PM  | Hide replies

Human error only can be covered by full proof technology not by predictive technology. When you are spending a lot then there should not be any room for other option like outside leg stump pitching,2.5 meteres away etc.Only criteria should be the ball hitting your stump or not.Cricket rules should be revamped if technology steps in place of human judgement.

Leg Stump Rule
by Nonviolent on Mar 02, 2011 04:36 PM  | Hide replies

If ball ptches on or outside leg stump the batsman is not out even if the ball is supposed to be crashed on stumps. This is true evn for a yorker ball.

So rules are rules, wright or wrong we have to accept it. There are manu fully rules in other soprts like scoring in tennis or off-side in football. We have to live by it

But the leg stump rule too should be declared illegal in India as the 2.5 rule is being done. ;-)

But when there is a rule that 2.5 mts pitching anywhere and hitting the stumps is not out and no one has argued on it before putting that in place... then what is ur problem... You are the biggest idiot.

Useless Dhoni
by gande devendar on Mar 02, 2011 04:33 PM  | Hide replies

Good comment....
Dhoni has been the most luckiest capatins of all times in any sports. He has not done anything great to be given so much media space. He was lucky to win the T20 WC just because Misbah was foolish in one delivery. Otherwise India would have lost that match. Later whatever India has won, it has been due to some exceptional batting, fielding or bowling by other players of the team rather than by Dhoni.
Now Dhoni knows that all the hype about India winnning the WC will burst. He needs to create some excuse for the same. Here he is making this small issue bigger. He should have complianed about this before the tournament. The rules are rules for all teams. Once accepted, teams will have to adhere to it no matter what. Talking against the rules now makes no sense. Such rules are not made to favour one team. At Bangalore, India was at the receiving end, may be the next time we will benefit. So there is no justification against the rules at this point in time.
Dhoni has been in poor form as a batsmen for many series now. His place as a player is at stake. He is there because of that combination of Srinivasan-Shrikanth-CSK. At Bangalore, when he saw the wicket falling at the batsmen powerplay, he thought he can make some runs by promoting himself. He failed.
He has been a poor leader. It showed when he openly criticised Sreeshant on his behaviour. Dhoni could have done this within the 4 walls. Dhoni should stop doing cheap tricks and not bring shame to the country.

Very well said.

Dhoni is also trying to be a Media Star! Whenever he finds some issues - like poor fielding, some bad bowling one day or some poor batting one day - he goes to the Media to blame his own hard working colleagues! He put the blame on others but never accept his own faults! I do not know who made him Captain with these qualities!

He is not trying to improve his own form either! He do not spent much time in the net and never encourage his team to spent more time in the net also! How can we expect such Captain holding a WC!!

He is approaching his team with an attitude - the attitude of a DICTATOR! If he does not like a person, he kills the person! Sree is one victim just because of one game! Now, his next prey is Pathan! He is doing everything to kill that player! When he plays without any streess or pressure, he plays naturally and 4's and 6's flows from that bat! Now, he is very much stressed out because of Dhoni! Whenever the Batting is doing good, instead of giving Pathan a chance to bat, Dhoni promotes himself up in the order! He is doing the same for Yuvi to keep him in the team! He has been an ardent supporter of Nehra! Now, becuase of Nehra one good player's slot is almost vacant!

He was so curious to fight all the injury prone players into his team! His intimate friends Yuvi and Bhagi are not rising upto our expectation either! All he has done is to make a POLITICAL GROUP WITHIN THE TEAM!!

I have seen many such review's on TV(Aus.,S Africa,England etc) where if hawkeye shows ball hitting the stumps, batsman is declared out. This is the first time I have seen decision being referred back for distance from stumps.

DONT SHOUT, KNOW THE RULES
by ALLADI on Mar 02, 2011 04:24 PM  | Hide replies

Ian Bell was NOT OUT
Dhoni is incorrect. If you want to change the rules same have to be discussed in proper forum. Not now. Middle of any tournament.
Being captain Dhoni must know the rules, then only he should put any comments
If any batsman go for a long forward and ball hits on his pad, 2.5 mtr distance, it is NOT OUT, whether ball is hitting wicket or not.

Again, when the ball pitchs out side the leg stump and hits on the pad batsman is NOT OUT , may be ball hits on the pad infront of wicket, may be his leg is even 1 mm distance from the wicket.
These are the LBW rules you have to accept. Dhoni must know the LBW rules, You people also should know then put any comments

GREAT!!!!!!!!!!

Dave Richardson advises that people should read rules before complaining but at the same admits "Most of the time, a player is not fully aware of all the rules" ... So as member of the ICC governing council he admits his failure in informing the rules properly or is happy that most of the players are ignorant about the rules!!!!

Perhaps, they are happy preparing confusing rules and blame the players for their ignorance of rules..... not a very transparent way of working!Q

Pls read the rule book before screaming. beyond 2.5 meters is not 'not out'. It just gives the umpire an option to be inconsistent. Umpire can chose to give our or not out and that is stupid

Hi,

There is a lot of discussion on why Dhoni was not aware of the rules. This includes an always unreasonable Bishen Sigh Bedi criticizing him for showing disagreement with rules.

I think let us not forget a couple of things:

1. It was not only Dhoni, who was not aware of the rules. England captain acknowledged that he also was not aware of the rules. ICC needs to look at its functioning and figure out why even captains of the sides competing in the tournament are not clear. This is a clear example of bad communication.

2. Dhoni has a undisputable right like any other professional cricketer to question the rational of the rules, whether people like Dave Richardson and Bedi like it or not.

3. If ICC is so certain about the uncertainty of LBW decision that on ground umpire can give benefit of doubt and they can't even confirm it with help of technology, we should have a rule that if the impact is beyond 2.5 meters from stumps, no LBW so that there is consistency. Same like no LBW decision on balls pitching outside leg stump

I feel it was a definite ego problem more than anything that stopped the umpire from changing his decision even when the batsman was convinced that he was out.

In the end, Dhoni must own up responsibility for poor bowling changes, field placement and bad leadership but we can't dump him with poor umpiring and inconsistent rules from ICC.

If the hawk eye catches the trajectory of the ball right, there is no way that the ball is going to stary from that line. This ICC rule is far from physics and motion of projectiles.

leave Dhoni for Heaven's sake. He has so much pressure on him, like endorsements, making a safe (?) future out of nothing, playing tricks to demoralize players he doesnt like, trying to sneak through the loop holes of his anti-lobby in the team; does he really have Time to concentrate on Cricekt? Forget updating himself about the Rules, no matter how nonsense/important it is.
