NOW DHONI WILL UNDERSTAND WHY SREESANTH LACKED PUNCH AFTER ALL THE PUNCHES HE RECEIVED BACK AND FORTH BY HIS OWN TEAM MATES. THIS WILL BE A LESSON FOR ALL CAPTAINS THAT DEGRADING HIS OWN TEAM MATE WILL MEET WATERLOO IN THE WAY OF NOT WINNING THE GAME. DHONI IS PLAYING FOR HIMSELF AND HIS TEAM MATES MAKE HIM A WINNING CAPTAIN. BUT AS USUAL CAPTAIN TAKES AWAY ALL THE CREDIT. EGOISM IN WINNING STREAK WILL NEVER WIN THE GAME. SA PLAYERS AND CROWDS WERE AFTER SREESANTH AS THEY KNOW IF THEY ALLOW SREESANTH TO BE HIS OWN, THAN SA IS BOUND TO LOSE OUT. SO WHAT BEST WAY TO DO IS TO BE AFTER SREESANTH TO DEMORALIZE AND OVER THAT OUR GREAT CAPTAIN DHONI TOOK IN DISGUISE THE SIDE OF SA CAPTAIN AND CROWD. WHAT A PATHETIC SITUATION FOR INDIAN TEAM. GOOD THAT SREESANTH DID NOTHING TO SAVE THE SITUATION AND FOR WHAT. THIS SHOULD BE LESSON FOR DHONI THAT BEING NON-SUPPORTIVE TO HIS OWN TEAM MATE WILL NOT SEE SUN SHINE, BUT DARKNESS OF DEFEAT WILL ALWAYS LOOM LARGE. LETS HOPE WITH THIS CHAPTER, DHONI LEARNS FROM HIS MISTAKE AND TAKE ALONG ALL HIS PLAYERS IN RIGHT STRIDES.

Picking up a point made by someone else before; Why did Sreesanth NOT lack punches in the first innings? After all, he had received the dressing down during the last test itself... right?

AP,
It seems Dhoni blasted him in the middle of third test after south africa's 1st innings was over when sreesanth had already taken the 5 wickets. I am not able to post the link but you can check in rediff arcives to know the Date when it happened. The article headline says something " CryBaby sreesanth at it again"

yes,Dhoni made a mistake he could have corrected Sree in private and not made public statements. Sree is very talented and needs to be handled very carfully,he is an emotional person. Also there is no need to single him out because South Africans are no saints when it comes to sledging. Please protect shree(and correct his behaviour in private and NOT in public, his agression nedd not be stopped,it is essential againt all white teams, only he should be taught to do it cleverly without being in the limelight)
After a long time i have seen 10 players surrounding batsmen like sachin and Laxman...but can't get a single wicket bowling for almost 20 overs..... Harbhajan gets 7 wickets but Harris couldn't get single....

Before start of fourth inning MArk Boucher was very confident on S.A. bowling. He said we have got enough overs to bowled out india on final day.....but great dispaly of defence by specialist indian batsmen because fall of one more wicket could have been decisive as struggler Pujara and unpredictable dhoni were next to come..
India first manage to level the test series in South Africa. All the claims about India's whitewash have been disappeared. Now nobody can question on Indian team ranking. Except first 2 days of 1st test India dominated over South Africa. India yet to lose any test series under Dhoni's captaincy.

by Jay Subramanyam on Jan 07, 2011 10:44 AM
If according to you except for the first 02 days of the 1st Test, India dominated over South Africa, then India should have won the series hands down. The fact is that both the teams were on an even keel if you take the series as a whole into account. But yes, India did assert their No. 1 Test ranking, which stands without doubt.

by Anurag Rathore on Jan 07, 2011 10:40 AM
Yeah. Dravid needs to review his performance. I think like Collingwood he should say goodbye to test cricket.
England have the best bowling attack in the world according to Ian Chappell and he in all probability is right.Just after the match was over Chappell rated England as best bowling attack way ahead of India and SA. The only doubt for me at Chappell got it wrong may be that Eng attack have not been able to win a test series in India Swann and Anderson will do well in India may be Tremlett and Finn can do a decent job but not sure of Bresnan who according to Bill Lawry is a bowler more suited to English conditions, SCG and MCG there was swing so he was successful. England can be no.1 provided they do all the great work done in Australia elsewhere as wel
Re: Great
by Popatlal on Jan 07, 2011 10:19 AM
Yes but England also tied in SA last year and realistically they would have lost 3-1 but the eternal chokers that SA are, they could not get the last wicket on two occassions. We will never know if this was a tribute to poor batting of the Aussies or the English had truly great bowlers but they were definetly disciplined
ifference b/w India as 1 and AUS & WI as 1: Aus used to thrash SA (2nd rank then ) 6-0 or 5-1 or 5-0 in test series home and away combined(2001-02 2005-06 seasons etc) when Aus were no1. India are happy with a draw when SA were 130/6 then let go a golden chance to crush those arrogant SA players

Australia(1999-2007) was champion side. The gap between Australia and other sides was huge. While in case of India, India deserve number 1 ranking but India is not a champion side.
Re: diff

Not when the aussies started their No 1 journey. You are comparing at the wrong time. Let India peak and then it will start its slide. Then compare.
Re: Re: diff
by Against Pseudos on Jan 07, 2011 10:34 AM
Varun:
There was no #1 journey during that period... The ICC ranking system itself had barely started in 2003.
The kind of dominance Nair is referring to (West Indies of the 80s or the Aussies of the late 90's first half of the first millenial decade) was the ONLY barometer of saying who was #1...
e.g. there was nothing like in 1998 Sri Lanka was #4 with 108 points and India were 10 points ahead of them at #3 etc..
But yes... let's wait for India to peak; if we do; and then we'll see...
Re: Re: Re: diff
by Varun on Jan 07, 2011 10:40 AM
Buddy i am not talking about the ranking. But i am referring to when Aus started their journey of domination. I still remember Aus going to WI and giving them their dose of fast bowling and blood in a closely fought series. So yeah we should wait till India peaks and then compare.

Aussie team of 2000-2006 was way superior to any team of today. The team boasted of a batting lineup that rivaled the indian batting lineup The team had a bowling line up, which was atleast 2 notches over the 2nd best bowling lineup.
Seriously, the only way Indian team can become that good is if we have a bowling lineup which could be deemed competitive to what the aussies had till 2006
Re: Re: diff

More over (the main thing) Steve waugh and his team mates had a hunger for win in every series which Dhoni and co. do not have...They (Indian team) didn't even try to win the third match in which they had an upper hand...They were (it seems) simply happy with a draw and retain the no 1 position...
Re: Re: Re: diff

Raj India
had India gone for an unlikely win and lost the match , you would have been here talking about how we should have saved the match.
There was little chance of winning on a 5th day track with 340 runs to overcome and against Steyn and Morkel.
Baring tendy, Indian batsmen have been found wanting when it came to facing Steyn. The fiery spell in the 3rd day was still afresh in the indian team where only 1 batsman negated steyn successfully.
Had the score been 240 to win, then yeah i would have said , we should go for the win. But 340 against the best bowling unit is suicidal.
We could have pulled it mind you, had Sehwag been able to negate the pacers well. But in the last 6 innings, sehwag has fired only 1 time.
The only way we could have won this as far as i can see , would have been Sehwag hitting a real quick fire 70 runs.
Re: Re: Re: diff
by Anurag Rathore on Jan 07, 2011 10:30 AM
It is foolishness to to think about chasing 340 on last day against Steyn and Morkel on capetown pitch. Look at their 1st spell on 5th day. Indian batsman got lot of troubles.
Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: diff
by Varun on Jan 07, 2011 10:42 AM
Cricket is not super hero comics. Aus wouldn't have made it either. They would not have let it reach 340 on day 5. Thats the difference. Hopefully India will reach there. If not, well so be it.
Re: Re: Re: Re: diff
by Raj India on Jan 07, 2011 10:36 AM
I didn't mention anything abt chasing 340...Pls tell me how they accumulated 340 runs with half of their batsmen were out before 100 runs on board??? India (i mean Dhoni) only allowed them to get such a decent total...When boucher and kallis were batting, the fielding was not attacking and most of the fields were on the boundary line...He didn't even tried with his part time bowlers...
Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: diff
by Anurag Rathore on Jan 07, 2011 10:45 AM
Simple answer. With the same field plan India got their first 6 wickets under 140. In my view when opposition is setting target and pitch is assisting bowlers don't allow then to score quick runs.
Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: diff
by Against Pseudos on Jan 07, 2011 10:46 AM
Hmm... THAT point of yours is definitely valid... whilst they were on the mat at 130/6, the match was 100% ours...
I do beleive that best teams find ways to beat. Right now I think both the teams are even stevens although numerically we are ahead but I still think if SA cannot beat us here they cannot beat us anywhere. I do beleive that but for the toss, the first test would have been a draw too as Clive Rice said but then we did not win the series like Englad did and yes Australia right now is no SA. Its always interesting to see Ian Chappel always unimpressed with the Indians. The Chappel Brothers are just too bitter
