Zaheer, what were you doing today?
by Goutam Bhattacharjee on Jan 05, 2011 11:53 PM

Why was Zaheer Khan bowling at 115-120 kph today? Is he not supposed to try at his lethal best, being the "spearhead" of the Indian attack? Is he injured, or does he think he is the next Wasim Akram?

Whenever there is a crunch situation in a series, a few members of the team come up with this sort of inexplicable performances which raises doubts about their mental maturity.

End of the road for Dravid??
by Junior Shelly on Jan 05, 2011 11:50 PM  | Hide replies

With Kumble finally hanging up his boots and taking up an administrative role with the KCA, Rahul Dravid who is also an elected member of the KCA might follow the suit.

Who is the greatest ever batsman of all time: Don or Sachin? Could Don have maintained his average of 99.94 in Sachin's era of stressful, non-stop competition with 2 game format, 9 test playing nations, new locations, a billion's expectations, etc.?

Both Sachin and Bradman have considerable points that somehow favour one over the other.

1] In the era of Bradman, the one single test lasted for 9 days. The format was reduced to 5-day in 1945 after which he played only 6 tests at an average of 31.4. Bradman's stike rate was not more than 29.7.
2] He played only 4 spinners in his time- Clarie Grimmett, Headley Verity, Eric Hollies and Bill O'Reilly, none of whom he was comfortable against. In fact, he was bowled by a googly in his last match. Out of these, 2 spinners were of his own team. He played only Verity and O'Reilly in international matches. He admitted that playing spinners was the most tricky thing he faced in life. I highly doubt how he would fare against the spinners if they are available in plenty as in this era. We aren't sure of the quality of bowlers and their pace.
3] The fielders in his era were not even a quarter as athletic as they are today, the fielding standards were very poor. Most field placings were very aggressive, there were very less players on the boundaries. This explains his heavy dependence of runs on boundaries.
4] The competition wasn't as intense as it is now. High level of incompetent cricket explains why more matches resulted

Don Bradman batted without Helmets, shields etc as did Vinoo Mankad, Lala Amarnath, Vijay Merchant to name a few from India. Also, the rules for Wides, bouncers etc were different.Just remember this when comparing players of that era with those who are well protected.

:) I didn't know that fielders had to do anything with batting either... ;)
Just because there were poor fielders, the tailenders were scoring triple centuries during Bradman era, or what? :)

Vijay:

I am curious to know how a batsman who has a strike rate of 29.7 scores a century before lunch, one between lunch and tea, and one between tea and end of the day?

Can you kindly explain?? :)

4] The competition wasn't as intense as it is now. High level of incompetent cricket explains why more matches resulted in draws rather than one of the teams winning.
5] He played only few teams, and at that point of time, it was clearly his team which was most dominant.
6] No pressure of expectations from the supporters as much as the players in the Indian subcontinent face.
7] He played very less matches as compared to what they play today. Today, players need more stamina to survive all the formats. No wonder, either we see players retiring at a young age today or quitting the test format. He and others got adequate rest and time to prepare himself for further games.
8] Most people in his era didn't take cricket as seriously as he did. Cricket wasn't a profession then, so we can say why his average stands out against his contemporaries. Bradman himself was of the opinion that there were other batsmen, contemporaries of his, who had the talent to be just as prolific as he was but lacked the concentration. Stan McCabe, who needed a particular challenge to bring the best of him, was no doubt one of them. "I wish I could bat like that, he is the greatest ever batsman I have seen."
9} He never played limited overs cricket, where scoring at a brisk rate is a must.
10] There weren't as many rules at that time. Its said that his bat weighed 6 pounds, I don't know its legitimacy though.
11] The bodyline bowling, which is said as unsporting i

11] The bodyline bowling, which is said as unsporting isn't a genuine reason that he should be rated highly. There are many more deliveries invented today, which could have been rendered as illegal or unsporting then.
12] Donald Bradman has more not outs per innings than other contemporaries, this is a very huge factor for his high average.
13] Bradman played only in 2 countries, England and Australia, the conditions were familiar.

my instinct says Dravid scores more runs than others in the last innings when it becomes a draw or a loss.

DISTURBING.......
by Abhijit Sarkar on Jan 05, 2011 11:40 PM  | Hide replies

Just no words for the bowlers...Bowlers eventually proved that they are good for nothing. No doubt Kallis played a superb innings but what about tail Enders on a pitch like this on 4th day. They could not even wrap the tail up... tail Enders has bitten them left right and centre. It’s been couple of decade now? When will we have good bowling to support the batsman? Be it WC03 or any other history making events..They let us down

INDIA ALWAYS WANTED TO PLAY SAFE ....AND WANTED TO DRAW THE SERIES 1-1 , INSTEAD OF WINNING IT 1-2 . THATS WHY THEY ALLOWED SA TO PLAY AND SETTLE DOWN ... IT IS COMPLETE FIXED MATCH ...WHERE YOU CAN CLEARLY SEE ...AGREEMENT BETWEEN TWO TEAMS....TO PROTECT EACH OTHERS INTEREST .... THIS IS NOT GAME OR SPORTS ...IT IS PURE FIXING ....THANKS TO MR. Now that its proven that Indian pace bowlers have a long way to go to learn the art of consistent bowling on good length area in every test match, its time we get back to the facts of this test match.

Unless Sehwag,Gambir puts up a score of atleast 115 by lunch , there is no chance for India to win the match considering the pressure of batting on last day. And considering our tailenders are not so good at batting. And considering we have unpredictable middle order who gives up of winning when they see atleast 200 runs to win.

Please don't indulge in inane fantasies and sully a fantastic test match, the likes of which haven't been seen in a while. Do you have any shred of evidence for saying this is fixed? A great fast bowler gives a master class in swing bowling on day 3 , a legend needs all his 22 years of experience to survive that fire and show why he is a once in a lifetime phenomenon and a 35 year old warhorse battles severe pain to pull his side out of trouble and you call this fixed? By your logic, Aussies allowing India to come back from 124 for 8 to make 214 at Mohali last year was fixed and so are the Ashes. Learn to accept a great game when you see it. The SA tail were fabulous in support of Kallis. Until the least ball is bowled, India has a good chance to win this match.

rheotric. because if they win the same will be said and if they lose the same logic again? I think ICC sleuths became too vigilant given the spate of incidents that shook the Pakistan cricket.

dont think india can hold out entire 5th day..
there is a good chance india will crumble on 5th day pitch against express attack.. something like 140-200 all out

india hs never one a test series in SA,Australia nd wid a targt of 340...it will remain so.
even county sides have better bowlers nd in the last two sessions it looked like indian players had already given up hope.

remember how aussies played whn dey were at d top....evn jason gillespie hit a double...no intensity.
come world cup and dey will b out on QF or max SF.

Vijay:

The same equation held in the first innings too...

1 Sehwag didn't fire ... India took the first innings lead

2 Steyn fired... but India still took the lead

3 if no one fires... India will lose... coz I can't see 10 Indians staying on THIS fifth day pitch for the whole day...
