I am a die hard fan of Australian cricket in general and Ricky Ponting in particular, but I guess on the basis of current form Ricky doesn't deserve a place in the Australian playing eleven. My be he might re-discover his form if given a longer run - just like Tendulkar - but his presence at the moment is disturbing the balance of the team. I don't really think he should retire, but I surely believe he should take a break.

Dont compare lean patches os sachin and pinting. Pontings has been failing last 2 years..avging 27-28. Sachin's lean patch avging 26 lasted just one year (injuries ...he played just 6 tests that year)
But then there is different yard stick between sachin and any other player
Ricky is really a good batsman to relish. Recent form with bat may be a back log for him but I think he will regain ascendency against the visitors in this December. He must continue playing and Mike is also a bright player but may be he may be rested for two matches and then tried after Ricky proved as a failure yet again. One point here is you would loose confidence if you donot have confidence in your other team members.
I personally do not want ponting to retire before the series. I would rather see him and symnonds play & Fail against Ishant & indian spinners & then chucked out of the Aussie team mid way. that will be immensly satisfying
I still remember Younis Khan, the Pakistan Current Batsmen,Said in 2005," that When we are out of form we Organize Series with India and all our players come back to form."I think CA should not replace Ponting or Hussey in Indian Test Series as this will put them back in form.

How you dare to drag sachin in this? where is the comparison? let Punter be agreat for you all,& let aussi decide to play him or not its not our headeaque, but sachin is far more greater than him, dont talk about his retirement & please dont compare him with Punter any way.
