D/L Equation
by Anupam das on May 04, 2010 03:22 PM  | Hide replies

Itz very sad for England..What I feel rain affected match should be converted in this way for the team batting second..
Maximum runs scored in any overs ( within 20 overs) lowest runs scored (within 20 overs) per wicket fall, run to be added is total runs scored divided by 20 overs. i.e.suppose 8 overs play possible after rain than team batted first their any 4 overs where maximum higest run scored eg.(16 12 10 18=56) 4 overs where lowest run scored eg.(3 5 5 4=17)now total runs scored in 8 overs =56 17=73. The side batting second should be given target of 73 in 8 overs..Now comes loss of wicket..wicket loss should be considered total score side batted first divided by 20 overs.eg.toatl scored side batted first 192/20 i.e.9.6 i.e again 10 runs/over.so side batting second if the play is possible for 8 overs target should be 73 10 tuns per wicket..So request to ICC members to consider this equation for any rain affected match..Hope nobody will have any complain than..

one solution to D/L method
by sridhar ks on May 04, 2010 02:04 PM  | Hide replies

Thanks to rain and D/L method that made almost certain win for England team a losing one. Its really pity. It would have been a little bit better if the wicket fall would have to increase the target for them. With every wicket fall, the targets have to be increased at same time. So this can make WI batsmen a bit cautious and England team a fair bit of advantage as well as they took 2 wickets. Watz ur say?

for ur information D/L system takes that in to considration. Here is the Equation

The formula used by the D/L system is:

Z(u, w) = Z0(w)[1 - exp{-b(w)u}]

where Z(u, w) is the expected number of runs to be scored in u overs when w wickets have been lost. Z0(w) is the average total score if an unlimited number of overs were available and when w wickets have been lost. b(w) is a decay constant that varies with w, the number of wickets lost.

i am sorry that i dont know how this equation works but i dint see that in match yesterday where WI were given 60 runs to win in 6 overs. Had targets been 60/0 65/1 72/2 80/3 and so on roughly as such, the match would have been more interesting instead of 60 runs to win no matter how many wickets WI loses in just 6 overs. The fight would have been both sides.

As far as i remember it was there in the previous form of D/L rule. Now the modified version is in place after ICC and different boards asked for this change in the rule of not considering the wickets. You are right, the wickets are to be considered to make a fair game out of it.

Collingwood is right in being upset
by emmanuel leorn on May 04, 2010 01:27 PM

Paul collingwood and his team mates were in the opposite side of Nature for once and despiten scoring a blistering 191 in 20 overs with a run rate in excess of 9.5 per over they lost because of the Duck worth lewis method . Had there been a match for more than 10 overs England would have won hands down . Not many teams can chase 192 from 120 balls and few teams like India , Australia and south africa could chase such a score but defently not the Windies and this is no IPL but these are pretty big grounds with each side of the ground being very huge indeed and had west Indies batted the full duration they would have lost the match .

D/L method
by anand datar on May 04, 2010 01:13 PM

In D/L method the maiden overs if any are not considered for per over avg, so the asking rate increases but also I think they consider the runs scored by the side batting first in those many starting overs upto which the side batting second batted. That means the side batting first has to score consistently, and not score slowly initially and then speed up in the closing stages. That's what they want.

D-L...is it fair?
by vathula on May 04, 2010 01:03 PM  | Hide replies

the best alternative to D-L is proposed by Jeyadevan (known as VSD method). Jayadevan is an engineer/ maths whiz from Kerala. However, there are flaws in both methods.

Personally I feel T20 should be played in full otherwise it is abandoned. My alternative would be to play the super over. To me its fair because both teams know what they are playing for? Also, the rules are
a) fully known and
b) the same
from the beginning to end. there is no shift in the goal post
