D-L...is it fair?
by vathula on May 04, 2010 01:03 PM  | Hide replies

the best alternative to D-L is proposed by Jeyadevan (known as VSD method). Jayadevan is an engineer/ maths whiz from Kerala. However, there are flaws in both methods.

Personally I feel T20 should be played in full otherwise it is abandoned. My alternative would be to play the super over. To me its fair because both teams know what they are playing for? Also, the rules are
a) fully known and
b) the same
from the beginning to end. there is no shift in the goal post

Unfair to England
by AC DC on May 04, 2010 12:19 PM

They batted superbly. Yet thanks to the D/L method they end up losing. Thank god this is not the semifinals or finals. Would be a pity if England gets knocked out of the tournament in spite of this strong performance.

On a side note: Why do the organizers always get the timing of tournaments wrong. Cant they avoid the rainy season.. after all the weather pattern is known

Alternate method

I heard that Harsha Bhogle's brother is a statistician and he had come up with a formula which was much better than D/L. Unfortunately, he was late in pitching it to ICC who had decided on D/L by then (cannot rule out the British bias factor). Maybe it's time he grabs this opportunity and gets the recognition for his efforts.

May be in more rain in future matches. So India also not qualify for semi-final as Indian blowing/fielding also a weak area?

You can't blame England for losing the match. They played like winners and deserved to win but for the D/L system.I am sure there are better methods to calculate runs in rain affected games.
It's surprising that ICC has not looked into anything better although voices have been heard against the D/L many a times in the past.

as they shrink overs & runs... they also shrink no. of wickets a team can play... (like 3 batsman 2 wickets in superover)

I dont agree. 60 runs in first 6 overs, is also not a small task. Many teams dont reach that score in 6 overs. how much more you can set a target for 6 overs. 80??? that will be too much to ask for.

are you nuts ? 60 runs in 6 overs is not even remotely as hard as getting 190 in 20. if it were 60 runs and you can use only 3-4 batsmen, things can be different.

not many teams score 60 in 6 overs coz they eye for complete 20 overs, and work as per their plan to stay and score till the last ball of the match. i m sure if the format is revised (which i personally not in favor of) to 5-6 overs, 75-90 is reachable

Solution for this problem
by yogesh mahajan on May 04, 2010 11:33 AM  | Hide replies

In addition to the D/L calculations, the following rule can be added only for T20:
1)For every 2 overs reduced for the side fielding 2nd., a wicket for the batting side can be eliminated. The wickets to be eliminated should be chosen by baating and fielding captain equally.
2)For e.g. in the above match 14 overs were reduced = 7 wickets eliminated. 4 wickets to be eliminated chosen by Chris Gayle(obviously will chose tail enders), 3 can be chosen by Collingwood (he would have chosen batsmen). So West-Indies would have to chase 60 in 6 overs with 2 top-order batsmen and 1 tail-ender. This would some-what even out the situation.
2)

For 20/20 if rain, then whats wrong to go for super over? playing only 20 overs, even in that 5 over?

Ya. .I agree with u regarding reducing the number of wickets for evey two overs.. But choosing the batsman shd be completely given to the batting team.. Whats wrong in top 4 playing while the score needed was 10 an over?? Let the bowling team get the wkts.. That would be fair for both the teams..

Its easy to call it a case of sour grapes for England. There are shortcomings in the D/L and mathematicians have highlighted those things.

Why mathematicians only
by pradip kachare on May 04, 2010 11:25 AM

I guess a pure mathematecian shuld never be asked to come up with Formula, The person should also know cricket very well, some of the things that should be taken into consideration are outfield conditions, light, pitch condition, and historical data of the ground in case of rains (how it behaved), as well as the type of match (20/20,ODI or Test).. based on these factors the target should change.. One monotonous formula can not apply to all..
