Bharat Ratna
by Frank Barone on Mar 11, 2010 02:19 AM

Bharat Ratna should be awarded to the people who dedicate their life for the upliftment of people. Those excelling in the fields of sports, arts, films, music, engineering, medicine and law, do not qualify for the Bharat Ratna. Fame and success in their respective field should not be considered a criteria. In fact, martyrs like Shaheed Bhagat Singh and Sardar Udham Singh , who sacrificed their lives for their country should be awarded the Bharat Ratna.

Bharat Ratna for Sports!
by Padmanabhan S on Mar 04, 2010 09:43 PM

That is an absurd proposition. If it becomes essential, they can award Super Arjuna Award or Parama Arjuna Award, but, by no means, a Bharat Ratna. The sportsmen play at the international level, earn fame, name and lucre and that hardly serves any national purpose. Even a win or a loss in a cricket match does not alter the fate of a nation. It is just a sport and it would remain so. For a man deprived of basic necessities, that is beside the point. But, for the sportsperson, it means everything.
And if you give Bharat Ratna for 200 in ODI, some day, another would score a 250 or 300. What Ratna would you give him?
Let us accept the fact that Bharat Ratna award is beyond all these sports achievements. It should go to one who has done something great for the nation and its populace, which is just not entertaining through sport.

SEHWAG WILL BREAK SACHIN'S RECORD
by damodaran mohan on Mar 04, 2010 04:24 PM

Sachin does deserve the award, especially for the the modest and graceful way he has conducted himself inspite of so much achievements.Undoubtedly he is one of the greatest cricketers ever.Look how fame and lucre have gone to some of his lesser junior colleagues who act as if they have no accountability. As far as Sachin's record of double century in one dayers is concerned ,it is certain to be broken by Sachin's chela, our very own Viru in not too distant time.

These words are completely unsuited for a legend. His achievements deserve big respect for him from the countrymen. Sachin is a legend and no doubt about it. He deserves Bharat ratna or not that is another topic of debate.

Bharat ratna for contributors not for achievers
by Medulla Oblangta on Mar 03, 2010 10:07 PM

Tendulkar is undoubtedly one of the biggest achievers in the country but I think those who have contributed their life, their energy for welfare of country in different dimensions deserve Bharat ratna more. Sports is good for entertainment but not upliftment of civilization in the country. If it goes like this then tomorrow Amitabh Bachchan, Shahrukh Khan even Shilpa Shetty (for her shapely butt) would be contestants for Bharat ratna but this way the purpose of biggest award in India would be defeated.

Vajapayee should get Bharat Ratna
by Abhinav VK on Mar 03, 2010 07:28 PM  | Hide replies

AB Vajapayee deserves much more than any other Indian to get the Bharat Ratna. Sachin has always played for money and for records. After playing for 20 years, records were bound to come his way.

Likely to Oppese...........
by Don on Mar 03, 2010 06:04 PM  | Hide replies

Great Dalit Leader Dr.B.R.Ambedkar Received the Bharat Ratna Award Posthumously (34 Years after his death, V.P Singh was PM ). Considering this Dalit leaders like Mayawati, Lalu Yadav, Mamata Banerjee, are likely to oppose the Sachin's candidature at this early stage.
At 36 Sachin has achieved Towering success from Indian Point of View but still Dalit Leaders may NOT let it happen so easily.
B.R.Ambedkar Received award after intense lobbying and follow -up.

Title of the article
by Jay on Mar 03, 2010 03:39 PM

It was only a respose to a query. And what Sachin said was "It would be a great achievement to get that award and join the greats, but I am not thinking of it yet."

The title gives the impression as if he has an eye on the award and called a press conference to say so.
