Ranji Performance
by Abhijit on Jan 29, 2010 10:18 AM

Ranji Match performance are the only way to analyse a players worth in India, be it Assam, Andhra, or any other team.
If you perform consistently well for a long period, sure, you need to get the nod if a chance arrive.
So, Badrinath deserve this selection in to Indian team

Stop singing praises of Pujara and Badrinath
by sandeep kumar on Jan 29, 2010 07:57 AM  | Hide replies

Just because someone makes 1000's of runs against bengal, saurashtra and haryana dosent mean on is ready to face steyn, morkel and co.People here are blasting Yuvraj, but as a 18 yr old on debut, he made 87 against lee, mcgrath and gillespie. Thats called real talent! Pujara and Badrinath should first be tried against teams like NZ and zimbabwe and then tried against Aus and SA. Also, can either Badrinath or pujara field like Yuvraj? And have they taken wickets with offspin. Yuvraj is a matchwinner and lets accept that. Incosistency is always a problem with strokemakes, but if he cliks 6/10 times, India wins

When has Yuvraj won a test match for India? You are confusing ODI performance with test performance. If they were the same, Rahul Dravid and Jacques Kallis would be the best batsmen in the world.

Yuvraj belted an Aussie attack in an ODI game. His weakness against short-pitched bowling was not known then. His weakness against spin was not known then. He was batting on a flat track.

Yuvi can't bat when the ball swings, seams, spins or bounces. i.e. flat track bully.

His fielding is secondary. He doesn't field in the slips, which is where you want good fielders in tests: Dravid, Laxman, Tendulkar man those positions. Keep him as an ODI player, no issues. He doesn't deserve a position in tests. Part-time bowlers are generally useless in tests except to give bowlers a rest. When was the last time yuvi took more than 1-2 wickets in a test match?

BTW, sachin tendulkar is a stroke maker. Ponting is a stroke maker. Lara was a stroke maker. You wouldn't call them inconsistent, would you?

wriong notion, mr MM< to call Yuvraj flat track bully. I have seen him play pull shots of the back foot on bouncy wickets when in form. And his 80odd on a 5th day chennai pitch won a match against England. Swinging ball is a problem for stroke makes..we have seen sachin and Lara fall many times to swing bowlers. (remember pedro collins?). And Ponting has had issues with spin and the short ball throughout his career. The point is in 10 years he's played around 20 odd tests, so now is the oppurtunity to give an extended run. I am sure when kohli, pujara etc travel to Australia, they will be hopping around as well, like many heavy indian domestic scorers whenever they play abroad. Once he recovers, yuvraj must be an automatic selection.

I don't think you know what you are talking about. Anyone who claims Ricky Ponting has a problem with "short ball throughout his career" has no idea about cricket. Newsflash: Ponting is the best player of the hook and pull shot in decades. Ponting's real trouble is not vs offspin, but vs Harbhajan Singh in particular. Like Collins is to SRT. All batsmen have bowlers who do well against them. For Yuvi, it's any bowler playing for the opposition.

80 runs on a flat madras track: wow! The fact that you can't come up with something better tells you a story in itself.

Any batsman is troubled by swing and seam. Anyone who understands cricket will see the mess Yuvraj gets himself into. He "hangs his bat to dry", as some commentators put it. His feet don't move. Look at how he got out in a recent ODI match vs Bangladesh, clean bowled. Geoffrey's mother would've done better. He knows only to slog spinners.

"I am sure when kohli, pujara etc travel to Australia, they will be hopping around as well, like many heavy indian domestic scorers whenever they play abroad": You don't know that about Kohli or Pujara. You won't unless you play them over the clown Yuvraj, who, we know will hop about. Dravid, SRT and Laxman never hopped about in Australia. You can tell from the way certain players shape to play fast bowling.

Yuvraj should not be allowed to play tests. He's had enough chances and has done nothing about it (he's 29). Let some 21 yr old play now. Ganguly, out of f

even pujara has scored heavily as 18 year old when he was man of the series in world cup. what more proof u want. n since then, he has been prolific scorer.

even badrinath has been doing well in domestic level.

n as far as ind batting gr8s r concerned, forget yuv, even the so-called bests fumbled in bangla when faced with short pitched deliveries.

Badri in place of Yuvi
by Surya TheGreat on Jan 29, 2010 02:27 AM  | Hide replies

Badri is a fine replacement for Yuvi not only for this test match but in the coming months too. Yuvi is not at all fit for test matches. He struggled like a school boy against Bangladesh attack. He's given ample time and opportunity to develope himself as a test cricketer but he couldn't. I would like to see Badri to debut against SA at Nagpur ( I hope Dinesh Karthik is overlooked for the test match but Dhoni may play spoilsport against Badri).

Congrats Badri, you're sure gonna replace Yuvi at the test level.

I won't be making statements like Badri is the right replacement for Yuvi until he performs well against Steyn and co.. Hope he is able to replicate his Ranji success at international level. he has got all the talents but can he handle pressure of international cricket? Yuvi is definitely out of sorts in Test Matches and some one with better technique is required. Badri/Pujara/Kaif are few options we have. Bench strength on bowling side is definitely empty especially in spin. Ojha struggled against BD. Shakib out performed Bhajji/Mishra/Ojha.

badri has been deserving candidate.
but really baffled not to see pujara's name in the list.
pujara has been the man of the series of junior world cup. he has been performing brilliantly n playing long innings has scored many double n tripple centuries. even srikanth had appreciated him abt his feat of scoring 3 triple centuries in a span 21 days time.
what more do u want one. or is it srikanth is having 2 kind of teeths one for eating n the other for showing to the world.

Team Selection
by Anew Post on Jan 28, 2010 11:03 PM  | Hide replies

Badri's performance is definitely very good in domestic circuit but he is going to be 30, why invest on him when there is a 22 year old Pujara who is equally good and considered as Future Wall. What is M Vijay doing in team? he is a opener and there is no need of a 3rd opener this place should have gone to Kaif who is in good form right now and his experience would have been helpful in absence of Dravid and Yuvraj. Mithun's selection is good but neither he nor Tyagi is going to find a place in final 11.

30 is a prime time in one's carrier. If he can play well, India can get his service 5-6 years more. Look at Michel Hussey. He got chance when he was more than 30 years old. Now he is the only cricketer in the planet who has average of more than 50 in both Test and T20. If he can't perform then the selectors can give chance to Pujara and others. Moreover, when no one performing well (Like Pakistan, Bangladesh), you can select a youngstar and can give him ample time to gather experience. However, when your team is no. 1, you will only think of best replacement irrespective of the age.

In Hussey's case he is a permanent member of team but in Badri's case doesn't matter how well he play, he will be dropped once Dravid and Yuvraj is back and he will be out for another 2-3 years till some one else gets injured or some one from mighty 3 retire. you don't start a career at age of 32-33 and this 2 test experience will be a waste. In Pujara's case this experience would have been useful when one of mighty 3 retires.

How do you know for sure? Badri has been grommed for more than a year, and if he grabs the opportunity, he could replace Yuvraj or make a case for an early retirement for Dravid/Laxman. Although the last 2 mentioned are great batsmen, they are 37 and 35 respectively. So, if a 30 yr old does really well, then why not..? Yuvraj still averages only 37 in tests, and has no place in the world's best batting line-up.

Agreed Yuvi doesn't have a place in this batting line up but Kris and Dhoni doesn't agree with this. If yuvi is in 15 then Dhoni is going to pick him in final 11. Yuvi will score some good score here and there and will retain his place. Unfortunately Indian's biggest match winner in ODI is not up to the mark in Tests. Hope Badri performs, he won't get a better opportunity than this. If he fails on slow pitches of India then that will be end of his career and he will be known as Ranji king only.

You want Badri's career to be wasted because he is 30 (or going to be)? Hussey came at that age and has become one of Australia's best batsman. If you can use up a batsman's prime years, its good. Why do we care about how long a batsman can serve the nation? He should worry about it, not us.
