Team Selection
by Anew Post on Jan 28, 2010 11:03 PM  | Hide replies

Badri's performance is definitely very good in domestic circuit but he is going to be 30, why invest on him when there is a 22 year old Pujara who is equally good and considered as Future Wall. What is M Vijay doing in team? he is a opener and there is no need of a 3rd opener this place should have gone to Kaif who is in good form right now and his experience would have been helpful in absence of Dravid and Yuvraj. Mithun's selection is good but neither he nor Tyagi is going to find a place in final 11.

Until we give him the test of performing against Dale Steyn and co., we won't know. Hope he does well for President XI and I wish the same for Manish Pandey (what a catch he took in Ranji Final).

30 is a prime time in one's carrier. If he can play well, India can get his service 5-6 years more. Look at Michel Hussey. He got chance when he was more than 30 years old. Now he is the only cricketer in the planet who has average of more than 50 in both Test and T20. If he can't perform then the selectors can give chance to Pujara and others. Moreover, when no one performing well (Like Pakistan, Bangladesh), you can select a youngstar and can give him ample time to gather experience. However, when your team is no. 1, you will only think of best replacement irrespective of the age.

In Hussey's case he is a permanent member of team but in Badri's case doesn't matter how well he play, he will be dropped once Dravid and Yuvraj is back and he will be out for another 2-3 years till some one else gets injured or some one from mighty 3 retire. you don't start a career at age of 32-33 and this 2 test experience will be a waste. In Pujara's case this experience would have been useful when one of mighty 3 retires.

How do you know for sure? Badri has been grommed for more than a year, and if he grabs the opportunity, he could replace Yuvraj or make a case for an early retirement for Dravid/Laxman. Although the last 2 mentioned are great batsmen, they are 37 and 35 respectively. So, if a 30 yr old does really well, then why not..? Yuvraj still averages only 37 in tests, and has no place in the world's best batting line-up.

Agreed Yuvi doesn't have a place in this batting line up but Kris and Dhoni doesn't agree with this. If yuvi is in 15 then Dhoni is going to pick him in final 11. Yuvi will score some good score here and there and will retain his place. Unfortunately Indian's biggest match winner in ODI is not up to the mark in Tests. Hope Badri performs, he won't get a better opportunity than this. If he fails on slow pitches of India then that will be end of his career and he will be known as Ranji king only.

You want Badri's career to be wasted because he is 30 (or going to be)? Hussey came at that age and has become one of Australia's best batsman. If you can use up a batsman's prime years, its good. Why do we care about how long a batsman can serve the nation? He should worry about it, not us.

dear freinds,
I am delighted that many yougsters like badrinath are infused into the team. I feel they should do good and also the board should repose good faith in them. Simply if they are going to be used for one or two tests and thrown out of the team it is like spoiling their career. The board should nurture the talent and try to keep them for a long time.wish them all the best.

Its said that a person's achievements are built around his 'Attitude' more than his 'Talent'. How true it is specially when it comes to 'Mr Yuvraj Singh', the biggest 'Looser' in world cricket. To his credit or luck, wotever u may call, he entered Cricket at the prime age of 19 and after 10 yrs this Man can be termed as a Mediocre achiever. Agreed he is got 'Talent' but even Vinod Kambli had it but lost in one imp aspect to Tendulkar which is 'Attitude'. If you see at ppl like Tendulkar, Dravid etc they are more recognized for their 'Attitude' than their Talent. Coz Talent can open the first door for you, even the second and the third but it would certainly not open the last door without the right attitude. Inspite of the fact that Yuvraj has been around for 10 long years he is not able to cement a test spot coz of his 'Wrong' Attitude. Late Night Partying, Having Affairs with All and Sundry Models/Actresses, Being a Casanova, etc have lead to his downfalls. Yuvraj Singh is a prime lesson for any youngster of 'How not to loose focus in Career'. A Career span of 10 years and having Career Test runs of nearly 1500 runs is pathetic enough to judge his mediocrity. He is been always in the NEWS for all the wrong reasons like Affairs with Models, Actresses, etc but hardly had any cricketing achievement. Its the end of the road for Yuvraj now. Byeeeeee..

since when did an affair with a model become a 'wrong reason',.. what makes you think models and actresses are unfit for relationships.... santhana, just like your name your thinking too is straight out of the 1940s

Attitude is fine...but for me the main reason yuvi has not secured his place in the test side is becasue all these 10 years he has not been very comfortable when it comes to quality spin bowling and also on wickets where there is lot of seam/swing.
One of the Reasons for that: high back lift.

Offcourse his temperament has not helped either; he is not prepared to grind his innings.

To his credit though he is good
sub continent wickets and even wickets where is bounce for that matter (where many other indian batsmen are not comfortable).

Ask yuvi to open the innings; he is not likely to average mroe than 10, since the ball is new and seaming.

coming back to the attitude: had that been a problem he wouldn't have been all that successful in ODIs/T20s either.
So lets not pick on him on his partying and fooling around stuff.

Badri has the mettle to become another Dravid. Hope he does well and cements his place. Yuvi has not been such an asset in Test matches.
