Eras change and so does cricketers. 'Brown' Bradman from the West Indies and the 'White' Bradman from Australia were the ones that could possibly be compared during those years. 'White' Bradman from Australia was regarded as the best then. Next was the era when Viv Richards and Sunil Gavaskar was compared. Sunil Gavaskar had more records and consistency than Viv. Once they retired and the reason replaced emotions, Viv was regarded as the best in that era. This era saw Brian Lara and Sachin Tendulkar and Ponting. The records of Sachin is the most prominent. And he is still playing. But no one can dispute that Lara by many holds the highest bet as the very best in his era. Let us wait and let the emotions subside. Then the right analysis in terms of entertainment quoient, consistency, battle against odds, number of games played, matches won/lost etc would decide the best batsman of this era ...
Bradman was easily the greatest. Even in those days his average of 99.94 was way ahead of the others. The second highest was Sutclife & Headley with an average of around 60. But that is not the case with Sachin. As of now Sangakara's aveage is better than Sachin's. Lara, Dravid, Kallis, Ponting are all in the same bracket of mid 50 averages. If Sachin had n average of say 65 then he would have been well ahead of the others. Sachin is on of the greatest players of the modern era but not outright the greatest.
If number of centuries are the base of great batmanship, then Sachin is the best. But if we take performance under severe pressure and help India to win matches especially oversease, then Dravid and Laxman are far far better batsmen than Sachin. Sachin is always played for records not for the country. Taken examples of Adelaide Test, Rawalpindi Test, Last test against new Zealand, Last series against Sri Lanka,2002 series against England,2004 series against Australia....and many more...If we take these factors are the base, then this guy is not at all better than even Kallis and Ponting.
that time was different & this time is different. there is no equivalence, just like when there is under 15 criket, under 17 criket although it is criket but still played for diffent age groups. Both batsmen r great.
I think it's really wrong to compare two greatest batsman of their era. When Sir Bradman was playing there was not single batsman even near about his stats. Now Sachin Tendulkar is playing same situation is there. Don Bradman was a greatest batsman of his era and now Sachin is best batsman of this era.
There is a difference between the greatest batsman and the greatest run getter... the best run-getter need not be the greatest batsman in terms of pure skill... now what is skill - the ability to play any bowler on any pitch and able to play any shot in the book.... i dont see tendulkar hooking fast bowlers of the calibre of holding or roberts as gavaskar did.... tendulkar's technique is solid but he does not have all the shots in the game... bradman was the greatest run getter plus a batsman of great skill since facing larwood on uncovered pitches without good protective gear needs amazing skill.... i would rate these bastmen as the greatest of all time..
1.Don Bradman 2.Vivian Richards 3. Brian Lara 4. Sachin Tendulkar
of course there are some truly greats like barry richards, graeme pollock but very less evidence as to their true merit in the international forum

lamo! Sachin doesn't have all the shots! wow..you made my day mate! a wide range of shots Sachin has nobody has that in their kitty!
Great bowlers oh his time say that he can play 4 different shots on one bowl and you say he doesn't have a wide range of shots! huh..you sure have some sense of cricket.

wow..but if it is true then why sachin has not tried to save india from inning's defeat. He has to make just 28 runs without exposing sisanth and udakant. But he was not able. I am his fan but these instancaes prrove that something his wrong :-- either intention or skill.

Devendra Tewari:
So you now completely disown our win against the Aussies at Mohali? Just becoz Laxman either intentionally or skill wise was exposing Ishant to the Aussie bowling? :) Wow... :)
the world media cannot accept and give to the world a batsman from a thirdworld country as greatest, specially when there is someone from a firstworld country at that position. reading from above. Sir Don has only played fewer games and places, types. What if someone younger came played 10tests /- in conditions/pitches that suit him best over a span of years hitting 100 in each(as conditions are suitable), would he be called greatest ??thinking of that! who apart for vishwanathan anand from india has earned the spot of greatest in the world? I am not sure though! random international people talking is not enough.todays power is the media. media should say that he is the greatest!!whatever sachin is doing,he is doing of own motivation. in a country of 1,155,347,678 - (2009) only one person can play so well???yet he is criticized. and this is not only for cricket! for all sports in India - we dont have 11players to play football? cricket?HOCKEY?etc ETC!!!!-not pointing at anyone here, but Govt's initiative

FUNNY!!,,,i have asked whether we dont have 11 players to excel in each field!! not all. ALL CAN BE CANDITATES. I was wathcing on BBC UK an documentary on Dharavi(pictured as muumbai as they did not show anything else!!during times of Slumdog movie,) they showed an upcoming crickter. They asked him what his wish was. He says; I want to play few matches and then get into modelling and earn money. He looked not too modelish but average like our crickters ok. but that was his WISH!!but why blame him, people supposed to serve our country also have same WISH!!
well first of all there cannot be comparision between past and prsent..the scenario in the past is very much diffrent from prsent in case of no. of ball in an over or rules of the games are concerned, while don has played only one format but sachin has been masters in all format of the game....don played mostly against 2 countries and in the home ground mostly while sachin has covered almost all the test playing nations.
Sachin Stands out in the following:- 1. The amount of grounds he has played. Don has only played on 7 or 8 cricket grounds. 2. The amount of matches played and the number of runs scored.
Don stands out on following:- 1. His average cannot be compared as he played for 20 years. 2. The double and tripple hundredads he scored.
I belive that we should never question the competative nature of cricket in any era, for example if we say Don scoured all his runs on covered pitch he also did not have the protection guard(hellmet, chest gurd, etc) which current players get.
Bradman had an average of 99.96...but 75% (5200 out 6996) runs have come against only one opposition....England.
Bradman played in an era where pitches were not covered....but that was negated by the restriction that bowlers should not be bowling above the waist height of a batsman...!!!!
Bradman and Co did not have an helmet...but the bowlers were not allowed to bowl into their ribcage.....when they bowled into their ribcage...it turned out to be a "Body Line Serie"....Bradman averaged 56 in the bodyline series...It brings down to the conclusion that had bradman also played in the current era where the bowlers target the ribcage of the batsman, he would have also ended up his average in his 50's...!!!

Boss u seem to have very limited knowledge of cricket, In those days Bowlers were allowed to bowl 6/8 balls over the shoulder (currently it is two), they can also bowl full toss (beamers) and the pitches were queered/under prepared. The greatness of Don is that a new kind of bowling was invented by Jardine etc. to counter him. Coming back to Sachin no doubt he is great but look at Kallis (38 tons) Ponting (39 tons). Can u recall any batsmen of Don era.

Totally agree with u Ruchika...Above all mentioned by you there were no helmets and other protective gears that are available now and still don played the pull and the hook...and his average is stunning and i could not understand the logic saying he has played only on 7-8 grounds and only few opposition...I am sure any batsman playing in same number of grounds and lesser opposition can never dream of achieving the average of don...so let us not compare don with sachin...don is the best

bodyline was there for 1 series alone. It was banned shortly after What was don's averege in that series ? Boss you can bowl bouncers all day long, but if you are bowling at 120 kmph to world class batsmen, you know what will happen No LBW's in that era Fielding was definately way below today's standards Pitches were uncovered, yes - but when the bowling quality is not great, it gets easily negated.

give me the name of any other batsman of his era, for sachin we have Lara, Waugh, Kallis, Ponting
