To what extent Modi is responsible for tarnishing the image of BCCI will be known much later or never (but will remain a bone of contention/mystery). If there is nothing wrong in BCCI's working including their management of funds then there is nothing to fear if IT authorities examine their record. However if there is something wrong howsoever insignificant it may be, then Modi out of IPL could turnout to be more dangerous to BCCI then Modi in with IPL!!!! Lot more skeletons will come out before this episode dies down one way or the other. More money means more ego and hence will brew more controversies at some time or the other especially when least expected.
Main Reason for Mody's failure is Obsession for Money and Fame in quick time. He wanted IPL to be Global Brand, Which IS NEVER Possible. Simple manupulation of figure to tell the world that Millions of dollars pouring in , is Cheating. Sports Brand can be Global IF at least 20 Countries ( Major) are taking part. And Quality of the game/Title. IPL is formation of retired, and debutant names. Only 40% of world best players are playing. Mody gave attention only to money matters, and NOT to the Quality of the Title,which has Zero value in International Sports Circle. World IS NOT interested to compete for substandard Title. His Money estimation was Right, but World / world Media attention is poor.

If Modi is seriously investigated, the trail may lead to Sharad Pawar himself.So it probably is a defensive strategy to support Modi. Perhaps, it is time for Pawar to make a call on Bal Thackeray once more !!! He was the guy who tried to brainwash the Kochi IPL team to defect to Mumbai or Gujarat.
