I met Shepherd in 1984 when I was a boy. Kapil Dev was playing for Worcestershire and had come to Old Trafford to play Lancashire. At tea, I ran onto the ground to catch Kapil and Shepherd shouted at Kapil to stop. Kapil Dev did stop and Shepherd asked me if it was me that was shouting support for KD..anyway, long boring story but what a nice man..infact both of them! Rest in peace..best umpire surely.
no one is talking about some of the remarkable decisions that he gave out on the field, the silly stupid and hilarious mistakes he committed and of course his stunning dance with harper on the field before the start of play. these things made him a fantastic umpire that he was, reminded every one that umpires are after all human beings and more than anything, brought to our minds vividly that there is more to cricket than mere sport.
Sad to hear that David Shepherd is no more. He was one of the best umpires and was always held in high esteem by all. As a human being, being loved by all is the greatest achievement one can hope for and Shepherd was one such person.
Its a huge loss to the Cricket. He was a great man, with a great 'eye'. A jolly natured man, often called as "the hopping man" for his habit of jumping on one feet on the field.
Your absence in this world will always be missed, Shep... May your soul rest in eternal peace.. Amen!!
