To hell with merit
by Vivek Dev on Nov 27, 2009 04:42 PM  | Hide replies

When Ganguli was dropped from the national team, the Bengalis threatened no Ganguli no test match and Ganguly was back in the team. Did anybody raise objections of parochialism at that time. No because the Bongs are supposed to be broad-minded and above such things. To hell with merit - merit is the last consideration in yeh mera India. INdians are the biggest hypocrites. Marathis must learn from the Bengalis, Malyalis and others.

Ganguli himself was a big politician in the team. So politicians are not always winners in every election and he lost when Chappell disposed his attitude to the world.

Then Chappel licked Ganguli's feet when he was the most consistent Indian batsman in South Africa. Then he clashed with Vengsarkar and was kicked out which served him right. Now, he is begging for job, but Gangu-teli is not.

Skill, not Sunny or Sachin, got them India cap -

It is true that everybody got India cap had skill of game.

But to have that skill is not enough.
Dirty politics, regional Quota, Money Power, Gadfother are all that needed to join the team & have your place in it.

'Saamna' has been pointing out that.
Players either from poor background, poor communication, without gadfother should be helped by Sunny, Sachin.

Rediff should increase its level of understanding.

Was Dhoni from a High class family ?
How about Pathan Brothers ?

Dirty politics can be played at any levels whether its in the beginning or even at the end of a career like that happened in Ganguly's case and you will see that in Dravid's case.

But why in the world will Sachin influence Kambli when Kambli was in the team and was not playing his game instead tried to be a macho man.

If every poor wants the help of Sachin and Sunny then around 30% of Indians will rise for help.

It should be performance and not influence that should bring someone in.

As far as this article is concerned Tendli is powerless!!But practically he is the only one who has a permenant spot in the team!! He is obsessed with his records only...he don't care for others that's why he cannot become a great captain and also he cannot inspire the youngsters in the team...

you are really funny :)
1) This Tendli is fool to score runs and make Indians happy and feel proud of.
2) He should get out on 0 every time and we will still keep him in the team saying he is a team man and gets out because he is playing for the team.
3) Tendulkar scores a 100 and that does not get added to the Indian scores and it only remains in the books of Tendulkar. India never benefited with the runs he scored.

Go wash your face its already 5.00 in the evening.

Throughout the cricketing world, cricketing geniuses have made lousy captains. Examples, Lara, Botham, Kapil Dev, Tendulkar. These guys were inspirational, which is not required for captaincy. That is why people who were not as exceptionally talented have been successful captains. Example Allan Border,Mike Brearley, Nasser Hussein, Stephen Fleming, Ganguly, or for that matter Gavaskar. The possible exception is Imran. Today Tendulkar is one of the powerful figures in cricket. But he chooses to stay silent.

Except for marathis the rest are all regional chaunivists. Marathis are suckers for all kinds of national causes they therefore lose out to the narrow minded regionalists. But the regionalists do a pretty good job of bashing marathis for being chauvinists. It is the Bongs, northies and southies, Gujjus etc who are the real chauvinists.

@Roy Why was Gangu teli reinducted in the team after he was dropped? Because the Bongis threatened no Gangu no test series. The man came back and went on scoring his 10s and 20s till they had to finally tell him to go. What merit was there? Face the truth- Sach ka samna kar.

Ganguly lost his place because of some dirty politics, and also the fact that his game had dropped. Once Ganguly got reconciled to loss of captaincy, he worked on his game, made a comeback and did really well in the last phase of his career. He was the highest scorer for India in Test cricket from the time he made his comeback to the time he retired. So to you I say - face facts.

Vivek, do not highlight 10s and 20s highlight his comeback innings and the other innings as well. He was the most consistent batsman after he came back, which justified his inclusion. In his last series he scored a century and several near centuries and would have scored more if he was allowed to play with peace of mind like the others. You are an anti-national that is why you do not show respect for your ex-national cricket captain, just like your Balasaheb. No one told him to go he left like a tiger with head held high. You are a provincial and Bengali hater.

@Roy: I dont know what big scores you are talking about. Only last year he was being told to go because of his poor performances after his undeserving come back due to Bengali pressure. But his cronies in the media could not bear to see the others like Tendulkar and Dravid go on. So they clubbed all the seniors and raised issues about all seniors going downhill. But only Ganguli was going downhill. The others rose to the occassion and gave a good account of their calibre.
Ganguli also created a scene in Pakistan when he refused to obey Dravid's orders. Had it been the case with a player from other regions there would have been a big issue and he would have been rightly dropped from the team for insubordination. Goes to show how rotten the whole scene is and how some people like Ganguli can take advantage.

Forget Bengalis. I am not a Bengali and I admire Ganguly. Please check the record books, from the time Ganguly made his comeback to the time he retired. His record was excellent. So cold hard fact. Ganguly was a fine batsman. He may not have scored as heavily as Tendulkar or Dravid, but he deserved to keep his place till the very end.

Yes! Good to know that Gavaskar was regionally biased. Good also for those 'talented' players who got into the national side because of Gavaskar. And the rest of us are unlucky to be born in the other states. Tears of blood when one reads about Dilip Doshi's whose career was finished by our 'heros'. He was able to make his debut only when he was 32 and took 114 wickets in 33 matches. Kapil is the real hero of Indian cricket. Before him we never had a decent pace/swing bowler and he was the one who brought in the fighting qualities to Inidan cricket (W Cup 1983, his knock in the tied test Vs the Ausies at Chennai, his famous knock at Oval (the British news papers were howling 'Kapil sets Oval on Fire')...many more. But where have we placed Kapil? We remove his photo from buildings and give lame excuses. We do not honour him the same way that we honour the other 'greats' in the 25th Ani. fFunction of winning the 1983 W.Cup. He was clearly left out, according to the media. Again, tears of blood.

Sourav had the same guts. Read Steve Waugh's book. He has stated that the Indian team according to the Aussies has a soft under belly - until they met Sourav's fighting Indians. Even Rameez Raja stated (after the famous Pak tour that we won)that "this is different Indian side, where no one plays for records or personal goals (he obviously was pointing to our 'greats'. Yes!Good to know there are regional biases in our selection. Kids & younsters living in other states will be motivated

Re: Re: Gavaskar was regionally biased ?

Dilip Doshi was unlucky that much of his career ran parallel to Bishan Bedi. By the way, there was a Bombay player, who was good enough to play for India but whose career ran parallel to Bedi. His name was Padmakar Shivalkar. What could Gavaskar do about it? If he had the regional bias, then he would have at least got Shivalkar into the squad, if not the team. The truth of the matter is Bombay dominated Indian cricket through the 50's 60's and much of the 70's with performance in the field. In fact Bombay won 16 straight Ranji titles. So it was only logical that Bombay got the lion's share of the Indian team then. For the paucity of pace bowlers, blame our dream spin team of Bedi, Chandra, Venkat and Prasanna. India was doing quite well even before Kapil. In fact India once chased down 400 runs before Kapil came to the scene. Kapil was great, but he wasn't the only one. It was Pataudi who made Indian cricketers into a tough fighting unit. His legacy was carried on by Bedi and Gavaskar before Kapil came in. The Indian team in the late 60's and 70's was a tough fighting unit. So Kapil came into a hard-fighting unit. India won the World Cup because we had the best possible preparation by playing series against Pakistan and West Indies which had the best bowling attacks then. Don't diminish Gavaskar. Do you remember his last innings on a spiteful Bangalore wicket? What did Kapil score then? Just 4.

You know nothing about Gavaskar. When he was offered the Captaincy for Benson & Hedges Tournament in Australi (1985), which eventually India won, he pressurised the selectors to bring back Mohinder, Roger Binny and Madan Lal. Moreover, L Sivaramakrishna was also Gavaskar's choice. Now dont say the names mentioned above are all Marathis.

The biggest con story that I have read. Rogger Binny, who took 18 wickets in the W.Cup 1983 & Madan Lal were stars of the world cup 1983. So had to be there. After those performances why would they need Gavaskars recommendation? The regional biases will kill the country. We all know how many cricketers lost their careers due to this. If it was not Kapil Dev who was behind the 20-20, it would have been approved. And we all are discussing needlessly. Nothing will change.
