Foreign players are needed for popularity
by Vinal Gandhi on May 13, 2009 02:11 PM  | Hide replies

A lot of messages on this forum denounce presence of foreign players in IPL. But foreign players are needed to make IPL a lasting success and popular among the masses. If no foreign players are involved, it will become just another domestic tournament like Challenger series and everyone knows how many fans watch domestic tournaments. English County Cricket was popular till the time foreign players were taking active part in it. With most of the famous names now not taking part, English County Cricket has lost its charm. Even in case of ICL, most of the fans watched while Lahor Badshahs were playing and that is because of foreign players. At the same time, it would not be proper to say domestic talent are ignored. So many new promising faces have been revealed. Jakati, Naman Ojha, Goel, Asnodkar, Tyagi and so on. And the IPL has put a cap of 4 foreign players per team which means 7 players have to be from India. Now if a particular franchisee is not happy with it, it is the fault of the franchisee and not BCCI. It is the duty of the franchisee to make judicious use of their players.

Foreign players are important not only to make the Tournament International but also to raise the standard of the tournament which would suffer if it is a 100% domestic selection. Some Local Indian players have made a mark in the tournament but majority of the local players especially the batsmen , Shikar Dhawan , Manoj Tiwari , S.Goel , Badrinath are not finding going easy which is putting their respective teams under stress. Maybe from Next Year IPL can introduce a system of " jokers" where when a team is playing their joker they can select their team without any bindings on foreign players. Each team can have maximum of 4 jokers and in crunch games they can go for the best 11 in their team without the foreign player restriction system. This will give the tournament a further edge.

Nobody seems to have understood what the headline means here. It means 'right' handers are overshadowed by Southpaws (Left handers)...

Dear Rashmi, it has nothing to do with vocabulary! What the writer has done is to play with the words, to sensationalise the matter! Rashmibhai / rashmiben, Generalisation is mother of all foul ups!

There is nothing wrong with our understanding nor is our vocab in hibernation.

A title like that is like a striptease - it makes one imagine a thousand things and it's intention is such.

Best regards,

Pradip

Cricket = Money!
by Raghavendra P on May 13, 2009 01:52 PM  | Hide replies

Cricket is no more a game. That's old news. With IPL, this has been cemented. In fact there is nothing wrong in this, people always crave for money, don't they? If I had an IPL team, I would have tried to find new ways of making money with my bunch of "players".
Other fact is, lets face it, Aussies are better cricketers than Indians. If not talent, it is their fighting spirit that makes them the best in business. So, IPL is as much about foreign players as it is about Indian cricket. Who would want to watch an all Indian outfit playing against another all Indian outfit. This has already been there in the form of Ranji matches where the stands are occupied by anything but spectators!

IPL initially aimed at promoting Indian talent but .....
by brookie on May 13, 2009 01:44 PM  | Hide replies

IPL initially aimed at promoting Indian talent which is young and fresh to give them exposed to international exposure thereby creating market for them but ended up just creating markets for sponsors and media. People who own these franchisees lost control and started gunning for all foreign players which is more than 50% of any team. The rest 50% consists Indian star players of about 20% who are already money spinners for themselves. Left is little room for local talent to flourish.
Racism among KKR is one of the side effects of IPL. At a time while we loose jobs in india, do india need to engage these retired, semi retired foreign coaches / players by paying them millions of dollars there by siphoning the foreign exchange resources ?

Suppose a more professional ranking system for coaches was launched instead of taking all manner of failed Aussie coaches..Something on the lines of a constructors championship in Formula 1 racing......That would be a refreshing change

Sorry sir -IPL was initially aimed only to cut down "ICL" to size.
All other things fell into place later - BCCI is the Money Making Machine, incidentally using Cricket !

CRICKET - LEFT AND RIGHT
by rajoo iyer on May 13, 2009 01:34 PM  | Hide replies

The lefthanders enjoy some advantages over the right-handers. Any tom dick and harry playing left-handed - give some stylishness apparently w/o they really play stylishly - whereas the stylish RHB should be more talented to be so.
The left hand batsmen clever cover all the 3 stumps and trouble the bowlers more than RHB. Besides - they always have an edge over RHB in getting the wide-calls. Similarly - the RHB on many occasions fail to read the line and length of left-arm fast bowlers -due to the awkward way they pitch the ball to disarray a RHB. While in test matches - RHB have enough time to settle down and take on the left arm bowlers - in 20-20 you have no time to do so and you lose the battle against lefties. The giant figure like Hayden - covering all the stumps and smashing the opening bowlers all over - as I had seen such a devastation when clive Lyoyd was batting in those days. May be some RHB appear more aggressive like Schewag or Afridi - but then in terms of consistency - they lack the advantages that lefties carry.

Ganguly? He used to be a batsman :) and so was Surinder Amarnath so are we gonna call all the yester year players? ... Ganguly survived his last 2 years in cricket because of his sponsorship and political pressure.. Ganguly is history.. On the field Ganguly now is like an old woman in her 40's who is pregnant. haha ha ha

But seriously the batting technique of KKR is so bad that even Ganguly's defense seems better than the others.
