GRV was the greatest cricketer ever to have played the game in the entire world and being the most honest man , the Indian cricket as a game had won many a hearts He was a walker and never waited for the Umpire to give him out When India lost the Jubilee test in 1979-80 against at Bombay, Mr KN Prabhu ,the great Cricket critic in TOI wrote that while India lost the Gentleman's game Cricket had won

While he was the supreme touch artist and had always played the game naturally with out bothering about statistics / records etc , Sunil Gavaskar was essentially a percentage player with limited strokes in the V He was never a hooker and avoided many strokes unlike GRV I rate Sachin as the only comparable player (may be ahead of GRV)
Being few days younger to GRV, I had remained his greatest admirer and fan to this day
We require more GRVs to lift the game away from to-day's ugly commercialisation back into its glorious days of late 60's and early 70's

Vishy better than Sunny
by Ram V on Feb 13, 2009 03:42 AM

Vishy is a strokeful and sylish player. He never played for the records and was never selfish. He never played for 60 over for 36 runs in world cup because he hated the captain. I can see Laxman as another stylish player, a treat to watch and of course Sachin is a class player.

VISHY THE GREAT
by RAMANAND GOPALAKRISHNAN on Feb 12, 2009 10:08 PM

G.R.VISHVANATH WAS EASILY THE MOST STYLISH INDIAN BATSMAN EVER. PERHAPS VVS LAXMAN, AZHARUDDIN MAY COME CLOSE TO HIM BUT VISHVANATH WAS A PURE ARTIST. WHO CAN FORGET THE SILKEN DRIVES, THE FAMOUS SQUARE CUT, ELEAGANT FLICKS. HE WAS A MAGICIAN. EVEN VISHY IF HE GOT OUT CHEAPLY HIS PRESENCE IN THE CREASE WAS FULL OF STYLE AND ARTISTRY. GAVASKAR. TENDULKAR AND DRAVID MAY BE CONSISTENT AND GREAT THAN VISHY BUT WHEN IT COMES TO STYLE AND ELEAGANCE VISHY WAS THE BEST.

With the exception of Sujith ("Somsunder" and not Somasundar"AM" the common tamilian 'am' at the end of every shiit)everybody had a supremely valid reason to be in.

Draivd, Kumble, Prasad and Srinath were automatic choices.

Sunil Joshi (was kept in because captain Tendulkar felt he was had an exceptional left arm spinner with a great guile in the angle of the delivery and also someone who could bat)

David Johnson bowled faster than the fastest bowler in those times i.e. Srinath. So he was brought in be someone like Shoaib Akthar but didn't work out and that's a different matter altogether.

Dodda Ganesh was given a chance just like the rest of the pack... like Paras Mahambrey, Salil Ankola, Abey Kuruvilla, Mohanty, Youhana and various other such players. (Just note the number of useless bombay bowlers who were gievn a chance)

Vijay Bhardwaj proved to be the right choice as he was the man of the series of the champions trophy (mini world cup as it was called then). He obviously lost his way after that and that is a different matter altogether. And moreover Vishy was not the chairman when this guy walked in to the team.

And tambi what is Srikanth(an) doing?? Bringing in Badrinathan, Dinesh Karthikhan, Balajian... all meaningless selections.

With Zaheer, Ishant and Munaf being automatic choices and Irfan being looked at as fast bowler all rounder do you think Balajian (with his 120 Kms balls) has a chance?

Karthickan despite all d runs behind him wil b alwyscw behind Dhon

so what, we have had substandard from Bombay like Jaffer, Naik, Agarkar given so many chances. There was a time when Sunil Gavaskar and Pawar wanted only Bombay players. Of course Dhoni is trying to change everything now. Hats off to Dhoni, India is on top.

Krishnan if the selectors give N time chances to tamilians no body will stay in the team because of there poor performances, lets see how many of you get chances by your Kris srikkanth,no matter how many you come you just can't be equal to Kannadigas - Srinath, Kumble,Venkatesh prasad,Rahul dravid

It is unsaid rule in Indian cricket that all karnatka cricketers are TRUE GENTLEMEN and TRUE TEAM MEN. Cricketrs from Mumbai are all selfish.

if mumbai cricketers are so selfish... then that should not help the team right.
Then why is it that mumbai wins ranji tropy time and again ?

It should either mean that they are actually not selfish and if they are selfish thern that should help as well (since "selfish" mumbai keeps winning...so lets select all selfish guys so that we win )

Mumbai players are selfish, they play for records
It' a Fact that Wheever Gundappa Vishvanath Hit century India have won except on 2 occasions ...one in Bangalore and other in Chennai- The match was drawn
In fact in the last test at Melbourne in 82 Vishy hit a century, Kapil bowled well
and the australians were shot out for 72 runs in their second Knock
Its not only Karnataks but also Players from TN are tru gentlemen and play to the spirits like Venkataraghavan, Krish Srikkanth, WV Raman...
If you look into Records of Both sachin and Gavaskar.........With their Centuries the wins.were in single digit percentage

if sachin and favaskar hit centuries and still we lose..that goes to show others didn't contribute at all.

When you gundappa hit century...go check how much others have contributed

when will most in the forum realize ...what selfish really means?

dude, nobody disputes that Dravid, Kumble are thorough gentlemen but does that imply Mumbai cricketers are selfish? Think before speaking espescially when you are being regionalistic. By your logic Ganguly is nothing short of a dacoit.
