kaif the fielder??
by ben hur on Mar 30, 2008 11:07 PM

even the best fielder like jonty rhodes had to perform with the bat to keep his place in the sa team.
so dont think of kaif merely as fielder coming esp in the test team. he has to show his class as test batsman to prove his selection worth.

sach absence: good chance to try 5 bolr theory
by ben hur on Mar 30, 2008 10:15 PM  | Hide replies

when big 4 sach, saurav, rahul, vvs r in the team, no one dared to drop anybody (except laxman the scapegoat always). that forced the capt to stick to 4 bolr n 7 bat strategy.

now sachin is out of the 11, so chance to try 5th bolr in place of sachin. good for the team to succeed n give result instead of playing for meaningless draw.

Not sure why the tinge of anti-sachin sentiment, but he was the highest scorer from both sides in Tests in Australia AND highest scorer is the one day series Finals (117 and 91).

If you need 5th Bowler, drop Saurav. Laxman is a class act and should be as certain in a Test team as Sachin or Rahul.

Just have a look at the centuries (Tests) these batsmen have scored against and you would see Quality against Sachin, Rahul, Laxman (and even Sehwag), but not Ganguly... And no, I am not a Ganguly-hater.. I just see him more of a One day player (where he should still play as an opener), but not a Test player at the cost of Laxman.

i didnt ask to drop sachin. but ind had no guts to take 5th bolr bcoz, big 4 sachin, saura, rahu, and laxman occupies the 4 midleorder alongwith 2 openers.
so only thing is that this is blessing in disguise. as v cant think of dropping saurav, laxman and v r more than happy with this meaningless draws.

indian need to be aggressive and go with 5 bowlers....ishant will be fit...he will replace sreesanth...and we can get chawla the wrist spinner in the absence of sachin....

Tendulkar out: good riddance
by mar gaya on Mar 30, 2008 10:00 PM  | Hide replies

Good to see that Tendulkar will not be playing the next match. I think BCCI should negotiate some kind of a VRS with Sachin. They should ask him: baahar baithne kaa kya lega? Its so boring to see the same guy since 1989.

hang on guys, lets not fight for discussions like these, Performance is the key for a player to stay in the side and not his age, caste creed etc. Sachin has performed in Australia, don't we see that ? even Rahul dravid performed in this test, had he not held his wicket neither sehwag would have concentrated on his batting, nor Indian team would've scored 627 ? Performers are playing, forget the age factor as of now,

true. in the series, 3rd test is at kanpur - notorious for tame draws and dead pitch.
only possibility of result at ahd.
even god cant save test matches in ind sub-continent.

A guy named Daljit Singh (the Mohali curatore) made this pitch. Mohali lately has produced only draws. So result is the same here. Earlier Madras used to have such nice result oriented test matches. Hardly any dull draws, whether it was Indo-Pak in 1999 or India-Aus in 2001.

First brush up your English and then talk about one of the leading lights of Bengal who is one the greatest captains in test cricket. Do not ever insult a bengali - we come from the stock of Khudiram Bose and Jatin Mukherjee who gave independence to this country.

You are one of the running dogs of cricinfo which has always supported south cricketers. Forget Psychiatrist - you should jump into the Bay of Bengal off Marina Beach.

My friend Kaushik Ya i do agree Gangs is the most successful cap of team INDIA, but he was not the only player in the team, other members performed to make him a successful capt.
Ya i do rescpect Bengali.. And very true, K. Bose & J.Mukrjee were not the only two freedom fighters my friend... And why this question of freedom fighters arise.
Finally Ganguly may be the laeding light of Bengal. But all Indians know the fact that he was one of the most selfish cricketer & Captain India ever had... Dont forget the argument he had with DRAVID when Dravid was the Captain of Team India.

Killing the golden goose
by Kaushik Ganguli on Mar 30, 2008 09:23 PM  | Hide replies

The BCCI is systematically destroying the game in India with its short sighted approach. From 1986-87, India has not played a five test series. What is needed is to prepare sporting pitches. How will there be decisions if such dead pitches are used? The BCCI should use imported soil and ensure that the existing curators - little better than maalis - are replaced by experts who can prepare bouncy pitches and lush outfields.

Also, rather than give matches based on regional considerations and political motives, have fixed venues and fixed dates. Melbourne hosts tests on Boxing Day ie 26 Dec and Sydney on 2 Jan. Adelaide used to host tests on Australia Day ie 26 Jan.

In the 1970s and 1980s, Lords used to host tests in the 3rd week of June ie the week before Wimbledon started. Why dont the BCCI do something like this?

I cannot imagine players playing in such unbearable heat and humidity. The performances are bound to fall.

Against England, the least the BCCI can do is to have 3 tests. Against Australia, the BCCI should ensure tests at the very venues where Australia lost in 2000-01 and drive home the fact that we defeated them - so that they are mentally intimidated.

In parting, I would add that this is bound to happen when Indians and Pakistanis run the game with dubious intent. The capital of cricket should remain in England at Lords. Otherwise the game will be destroyed for good. We are repeating the mistakes committed by FIFA.
