Indian team is a quota team
by on Jan 01, 2008 11:46 PM  | Hide replies

Indian team is a quota team. Some places are Reserved for people belonging to certain religions, though it is never openly admitted.

How far a quota based team can go? It can be Good at the most but it can never be THE BEST becuase for that all 11 players need to be selected on Merit and Merit only.

As Chappel put it in his column in cricinfo it is so very right.

"From the moment Rahul Dravid and Wasim Jaffer dawdled like a pair of aging tortoises on the second morning, India's fate was sealed.

Not only did they sacrifice all the momentum that had been hard won by the bowlers they also made it difficult for their middle-order batsmen to regain the initiative with a counter-attack.

For this sorry state of affairs Dravid must take the bulk of the blame. A player of his calibre shouldn't labour for 66 deliveries over five runs and for him to not unearth some singles with his experience is a crime."

Fully agree with Chappel's assessment on Dravid and Jaffer. Question is do we persist with Dravid? He could be dropped - he's been in terrible form clearly and has shown very low levels of confidence. I personally favor Sehwag. I also agree with him that Jaffer needs to sit out. So that would mean, either Sehwag and Karthick or Sehwag and Yuvi at the top or Sehwag and VVS. None of those "sound" like safe options. If I had to pick b/w Yuvi and Dhoni, I'd like Dhoni to stay and Yuvi to go. But all said and done, the most reasonable thing would be to let Sehwag open with Dravid or Karthick, defintely not with Jaffer or VVS.

Last but not the least, I think there's no one better equipped than SRT to play the new ball; but it would prove way too costly for us - but might be an option to consider. Definitely not SG tho'..

agree with the Sehwag / Dravid combo. Dravid is too good of a player to have played like that in 1st tst. I still can't phathom what he was up to. If SRT is so well equipped he should grab the bull by the horns and go in. Thats when heroes are born. But he won't. he knows his career will be over.

Its too late in his Test career for him to open. He's never done it. Not even in Ranji. Like Boycott says - "Openers are special. You've got to want to open to do well there". That's what made Gavaskar, Boycott and others classic openers. Clearly Dravid was talked into opening and that explained his failure.

But my point abt SRT is that because of the way he plays, he will be successful even up the order with about the same average - but its costlier to lose his wicket early on, than say coming in at #4. Even after 18 years of his coming onto the scene, that is the sorry state of Indian batting - this is what happens when we can't find a suitable, stable replacement for Gavaskar - I thought SS Das was good - people messed with him and he's history now. Look at how the Aussies persisted with Jaques instad of Hodge or whoever was his competitor - they emphasize on stable opening pairs, while we tinker with them..

*..just to make things clear, Hodge (if I got his name right) was a top quality middle order batsman, vying for a cap around the same time Jaques was being recruited...they went with Jaques

Surprise Oz with Ishant !
by Karthik on Jan 01, 2008 11:41 PM  | Hide replies

Hey guys...i think Ishant has to be the surprise package that Oz wudnt have expected, he's got the frame to get the bounce out of the wicket, other indian bowlers might have been studied by OZ as well as are of smaller frame, thus unable to trouble the big auusie batsmen..We got to be different and think them out if we have to make any impact, i wudnt mind even surprising them with some pinch hitter in case the scoring rate is 1 or 2 runs / over...

because he takes the initiative away from the bowlers. Wait and watch approach doesn't work. At least from one end, the floodgates of runs needs to be opened. If both batsman are content blocking, fending, missing and edging; they'll never rotate strike and after lasting three hours, by the time they're both out, we'll have little to show for it with the score reading more like 20/2, leaving the Aussie bowlers all pumped up and #s 3 and 4 become "virtual openers" again.

But as far as we seen in the last two years with sehwag most of the times we are 10/1. He has got lot of opportunities than any other and can not prove himself in the last two years. He is not learning from his mistakes. Repeating the same mistakes every time. And Aussies are not so foolish to leave him like that. Thay will send him to pavallion in the first few overs only.

see sachin, dravid, ganguly, laxman, bajji all are in due to ther past experience not due to current form... if that is the criteria to select playing 11 then wats wrong with selecting shewag, he is most successfull against aus compare to others.....
and after worst defeat also if shewag is not in then this perfect systsm to scrap the players.

who can say all sachin, saurav, laxman are not in their form and selected only on their experiencs?
Saurav has maid 1200 runs this year than any other Indian Batsman. Sachin also in good form and made almost 900 runs this year. Sehwag can not make even 400 runs in the Ranaji games also this season.

well..if we're going to be 10/1, better to be 10/1 without wasting too much time. Plus he's not that bad in Aus and he averages 49 or something in Tests - so he's no dud. If it were upto me, Dravid would be keeping, Sehwag would be in, Pathan would be in (he can bat a bit down the order too) and our T20 chumps (oops, champs) - the wham-bam, thank you ma'am heros, Yuvi and Dhoni would be shown the door.

face it bro..20/20 is the future of cricket...5 days will be ancient hostory if this game wants to survive..one doesnt have time ot watch a guy take a leak and a dump, and eat lunch and dinner for 4 days before the game is over...and as for your comment on Yuvi and Dhoni..you are wrong....Tenduckar should have been shown the door a long ago. Now and themn he will score a 100 and everyone will say what a god he is. Trust me. I watched India in the 1990's paying a bu tt load of doallrsto Dish network just to watch Tendu. Tendu sell by date is over in 2003. The more he stays, the worse days you will see for India. remember T20 was won when all the teams were at "FULL"strength, thats right. FULL strength. And India shone because the 3 Senior duds werent in it.

Hmm..don't know abt that bro - Test cricket will survive the ages. You can swing and miss all you want in the T20. Bring in the cheerleaders - hey, even allow players to booze on the field or make it a "T0" next and decide the game on a toss (why bother even bowling 20 overs?) while the players swig on beers backstage. How abt that?
That's why they're not Tests :)
Wise up..
That's the reason Yuvi and Dhoni looked like fools out there in the middle, playing and missing and clueless in general...

what're u complaining against - they both got their chance, didn't they? and they came a cropper! Performing well on a dead pitch in a one-off B'lore Test when anyone and everyone scored 50s and 100s at will (if I remember correctly and its a pain to even keep count - there were like 7 or 8 hundreds in that game - even two double hundreds or something; despite first team scoring in excess of 600, game ended without result - that's why that was not a Test quality pitch). Compare it to the MCG pitch - just one 100 was scored. Game lasted 4 days and with some sensible batting by us - we would've had a result in 5 days; but I put that down to lack of a good tour game and poor mental preparation. Get it? That's why, I advise you not to watch too many T20 games.

too many? Do u know how many T20games have been played? I wish there were too many. If you want hunker down beers and go for a leak and a dump and eat lunch and dinners and sleep for 4 days before a match is over, then you need to not only wise up but get your a$$ out of the chair. Very soon medicare will be paying for your treatments and we will be paying for it.

COme back to Bangalore test. Again you are missing the point. the score went beyond 600 was because of Yuvi and u wannt him dropped the next test. Yeah. Thats what watching too much test cricket does to your bain. It makes it go dead with no chance of recovery.

He-he .. Good one abt the medicare! Good thought tho'...I'll take you up on it. Doesn't hurt to have others pay while I sit back and watch the Test matches, swilling down beer after beer ;) - the reality tho' is that I'm following whatever the internet feeds me; specifically the patient, quality online commentary by cricinfo's team. Has been ages since I watched a Test match or for that matter; well any cricket match actually - and I'm happy for it. Didn't see that comin', did you? ;)
As for the Bang, test, yes it was a flawless innings and I did say back then that it would be a painful headache for the selectors - 'cos they had to pick him to avoid the embarassment and I also said I knew what was coming after that - the double failure we saw at MCG and make it 6 more for his 6 innings left in what remains of the tour. I'm ready to wager a beer on that.

dont tell me Sehwag wouldnt have scored 20 runs in two innings that the Great Wall put up. The only difference. The very face of Dravid demoralises every one following him. World class players dont poke around 180 balls to get 20 runs against a not so great bowling attack. Lee/Clark/Johnson. Comen.

...our main pace bowler was Zaheer and he seemed to be doing ok. Now this! The injuries to our pacers is baffling. I mean, its not like they bowl real tight and fast. Look at Lee - nice clean action, wiry frame (even leaner than Zaheer) and yet generates such consistent pace and bounce. Can't wait to see how fast Tait is. Just not good for us. Even last time he missed the tour or most of it. So far Zaheer's played like two or one (if I misread) Tests in Aus!

if u have "ever" taped a Auzzie game either in your DVR/PVR or VCR, go and check what Lee does just before the point of delivery. Make your own judgement. If you think its clean, then so be it. I have my opinion and it is: HE CHUCKS.

Don't know about that, man. Has he ever been called for chucking? I doubt it. I agreek Akhtar chucks and I think Murali is a disgrace to bowlers all over. But Lee - don't know - either he disguises it really good (in which case you got to give him credit for it) or he's clean. But hey, if he chucks he chucks. Doesn't stop our guys from getting a clever disguised, chuckin' action, does it? What we need is disguised chuckers that can top 145 and bowl well direct bouncers and a tight off-stump line & length consistently. There - now we both are happy :)

The only thing that could have changed was bringing in Sehwag for Yuvi. Otherwise even thinking of dropping Dravid is total folly. Rest are in form and hence they have to play. Looks like the Indians need to prove Aussies wrong and hence are taking yuvi despite his discipline problems
