IPL ..et al are a BIG FLOP
by Ramesh on Feb 19, 2008 11:15 AM  | Hide replies

Take my word for it...all this big money at stake is going to the dogs... TV viewers (on which this ENTIRE industry is hinged and pivoted) are going to get bored by too many matches being played around. Cricket in India caught momentum due to the patriotic feeling attached towards it. India Pak matches create more tension than the border skirmishes even today. After the sensex figures, the second most looked figures are the cricket statistics... Given this cosmic scale of the status of cricket in india...these leagues are going to make cricket a banal, trite and a routine game. I predict the sponsers will be taken for a ride. (and some of the players as well). God save these people!

do you know how many matches of Basketball going on USA tv network everyday.

And USA is 1/4th of population of India.
And their spectators are spending 75 times more on sports than India.

Buddy...before you can bet on IPL and on Cricket in general...you must think of the Origin and the CULTURE of the place where it is being Played!!
This is india...and we go by emotions and sentiments...contrast it with US.
Dont ever compare the SCALE and magnitude of a game. As i said before Cricket caught the appeal of masses only for its patriotic appeal...just look at the people around you ..your homes...HOW Many of them watch cricket for the love of it...very few...and even fewer will watch it from a 'technical' view point.
The point i want to make is...that...this GRAND scale of IPL is going to back fire. I am not saying that cricket is not generating revenues (it is generating and thats the very reason now why these money crazy leagues are being arranged...) anyway...these are my predictions..and i can be wrong...but atleast i said my two cents on them!!

Why does every one work?
They all work thinking that some day they 'll retire securely. What do they do once retire?

They play.
That is the whole purpose of Life.

If people had all the time and money in the world, they 'll simply play.

Sure some Idiots get a kick out fame et all.
In the end it all don't matter. Death eats every thing.

IPL will be the biggest flop show.
Indian public is crazy about cricket only when the Indian XI plays an other national side.
Who has interest in club cricket?
Only aging and retired players will get huge monetary gains in this tamasha.

agreed. We enjoy only because national pride is attached in the game.
When one of our batman hits Lee/Akthar/Vas we are thrilled. But we will not enjoy sachin & lee together.

Arun is right.
Where the IPL is getting it all wrong is that they would be showing this tournament only on Star Sports, and not on DD National, where only the matches of "national importance" are purportedly shown.
Everyone knows that the cricket-crazy fans are not in the metros but in the fringe cities and towns, where all do not have Star Sports.
Moreover, they love to watch Team India play and not their States, leave alone city clubs. They would, instead, go about their own ways of life, as they would not want to dilute their "strong loyalties towards Team India" in a tamasha.

positive n negative hype around players.
by ben hur on Feb 19, 2008 11:04 AM

there r some hypes which may b positive or negative which shows the wrong picture abt a player.

positive hype around yuv/dhoni shows they r great players but in reality, it may b reverse.

negative hype around munaf shows he is bad player but actually this down to earth player is very good.

The fools at BCCI....
by Vikas Bhatt on Feb 19, 2008 10:55 AM  | Hide replies

Do they even have a team in place that can even win matches at home after the likes of SRT, Ganguly, Laxman, Dravid and Kumble are gone? Do we have a team after 3 years that can even win a JAMODI at home let alone tests at home and abroad? A bunch of FTBs that can slog out a T20 match is all we have to show for 'young talents'.

I P L TAMASHA
by Rajesh Vyas on Feb 19, 2008 10:52 AM

Sir:

The IPL was floated by BCCI not for love of the game but for love of money.
It was a reaction (BCCI USUALLY ONLY REACTS)to the Indian Creicket League of Naresh Chandra.

This is not going to be cricket. This is going to be a carnival. There is enough international competitive cricket anyway. WHO NEEDS A TAMASHA? Unlike the Eurpoean Foot ball League that is very competitive, this game of cricket is played by a nadful of nations only.

Let us give a chance to this definite FARCE. It will go the saqme way as Kapil Dev's ICL

BCCI is killing cricket and taking away the national pride and adding price to it and for the people associated with it. A time will come when people will stop watching cricket and this hype will go away.

Agree with you in totality. This is all hype as you said..and the only reason why cricket caught the interest of the masses is the patriotic feeling attached to it. These leagues are going to be commercial and people are not going to get fooled by this

Cricket is killing other sports
by on Feb 19, 2008 10:45 AM  | Hide replies

This IPL thing is going to steal away what little energy left in other sports. Many important sports like hockey, basketball, tennis, golf etc are suffering from the nation's fixation with this cricket. We complain during international events like Olympics and Asiad that we are not getting any medals. How can we show our face in public with a country of 1.1 billion has no medal winners in any event. If only the corporate world spends some money encouraging these other equally interesting and challenging sports, that would do India heaps of good.

Let the spectator decide what sports to watch.
No need to tell the spectator what sport to watch and what sport is good.

Most of the sports you mention except golf, are tuned to favor Caucasians. They require less of skill and nuances more of aggression.

Golf is good. But initial investment high for learning it for a average Indian.

Dont forget one thing. Hockey is still the national game of our country..(and for the newbies..we won 8 hockey golds in olympics...hmm...call them golden years). The only reason cricket appealed to the masses was the patriotic feeling associated with it. think of india-pak match..and the energy it generates!! Now though its a different BALL game together..and it has become commercial

That was before Caucasian countries changed rule to synthetic grass court. It favors fast runners and aggressive hitters more. Of course that didn't help India.

Why do you want to play by the rules set by others.

India with 1.1 billion it almost a world on it own. Lets not let rest of the world tell us what sport is good for us.

WWEC - world wide Entertainment cricket
by AP on Feb 19, 2008 10:40 AM  | Hide replies

I think, cricket is going the way WWF has gone, from WWF to WWE, more acting than reality.

Probabaly in years to come cricket will be called world wide Entertainment cricket - WWEC.
Matches will be predecided as per the mood of the public and money of the sponsers. The presentation will matter more, the more realistic it may appear, the better will be the script writers or presentors cheque.

Biggest fools will anyway be the general public....so guys be ready..

If BCCI with their arrogant and unrighteous ways think, they can make even more money thru IPL, they are living in fool's paradise. Franchisees will go bankrupt! Their investment wont generate enuf returns for them to survive. Players can make some money for now. Thats it!
