Laxman is scoring runs at better average than Ganguly and Tendulkar since Jan 2005. Notably he is coming at number 6 (resulting in lesser number of chances and pressure to carry the tale) Also, when he came at number 4 in Zimbabwe he made a blistering century!

You should actually say the Fab Five. These guys have done great service to Indian cricket. I think everyone here should remember one thing. Since Jan 2000, only Australia have won more overseas tests than India. Australia are an exceptional side built by a superb system. We have exceptional players who have really pulled their weight together. You also have to think of the amount of politics they have to handle. The politics in Indian cricket is less only than that in Pakistan cricket. That these guys have achieved so much in spite of all these problems reflects to their credit. Regarding Laxman, the problem is he is a laidback guy, he is not a headline puller. Only people who know their cricket know his value. The reason for his not getting as many runs is because he has to bat with the tail. He has scored really well in partnerships with Sachin Rahul or Sourav. Whenever, he got the No. 3 slot, he has been fabulous. So all those asking for Yuvraj, look at the proven instead of the potential. Talking about Laxman, during the 2003-04 tour the Aussie PM took time off work to see him bat!!! Not to see the Aussies mind you, to see Laxman bat!!!
If this forum is an indicator of a typical "Indian Fan", I think I now understand why the country has so many fan problems.
None of the comments really reflect what is in the interests of the team. One guy loves Dada, another loves Sachin and the third is stuck thinking that Lakshman is somehow discriminated!!!
Lakshman is actually a good player and he does produce when the chips are down. Lakshman was not discriminated against when he first started. Remember all those innings when he failed as an opener? Number 6 is perfect for his style. He can score quickly and is solid under pressure. Laxman is a very good test bat.
It is one innings and that too an incomplete one. Let the dust settle first and then start bartering for who needs to stay and who needs to go.
This chanting and over-reacting has to stop some place. Everything about you guys is Knee-Jerk.

It's not fan following or media highlight dear. It's the outburst of reactions through out India. We were all silent these days because Laxman was silent even when he wasn't picked, kicked in a very very special manner. Now that he burst out, it is our duty to support this guy with no god fathers in selection commitee or the media hype which the other cricketers have. good try regarding your comments. Try again! hehe.

Dude did you even read what I wrote? Was it that complicated to understand that I was referring to idiots that continue to batter Lakshman? I just think over reaction whether it is for a true cause or not does not help the cause!
I believe that Lakshman is one of the best and when in full flow is beautiful to watch. He does very well under pressure. He is sound above the shoulders.

"It is one good innings that too an incomplete one." His status is always incomplete and this knock was very crucial for the country but the country men(BCCI & Players) still ignore him & obviously he plays for country not for sponsors. Now, don't call this cheer leading. ;)

I was referring to the Indian Innings man. I dont want to Jinx it by saying anything but if he get through the first 30 mins tonight (my time), he will have a chance to get India into a strong position. The Wicket is doing some stuff and you can see it. It was still seaming and the ball that got Dravid was really a beauty. If you can get a ball bowled from that angle pitched at the point to come back and hit off stump, the wicket definetely is doing things.
It will be difficult to ignore the guy after he scores big in an innings like this.
If you really want to understand the psychology behind this stupidity of the fans and BCCI, let me explain:
India believes in quick hope and quick changes. Once you know a certain commodity, you know what it can do or produce. If it does not look like a "miracle cure or commodity", Indians are not interested. This actually goes back to their daily life. They are hoping for a miracle everyday in their lives. This is the only "out" they have. So, if they see that there is a miracle on the field they see that happening in their lives as well.
That is the reason for the love for Sachin. He may not have produced at some crucial junctures for India but, when he does, he makes the team win and win well. It looks like a miracle for all those people who consider themselves to be underdogs to see this little man go out there and blast some runs against the best. His height helps as well!Lakshaman is classy and steady!see it?

Jim: JIM thank god! at least there is one more who thinks and writes (on rediff board) in an objective manner on Cricket! there are quite a few others as well, but you write very well ...instead of being fanatic!
Ganguly shd lead the team for 2 yrs and groom Dhoni in all ways........ODI TEAM...then he became indian coach directly...where i feel he is more aggressive and know all the world pitches...............

if dada is made captain he starts dadagiri on other members and on bcci.as a result he forget to perform with the bat and he behaves like a god of indian cricket.
I see too much partisan debate and abusive observations regarding the merits of the cricketers. Please try to be objective, friends!! Sachin and Dravid are still good enough to play . Sourav was brilliant, but like Viswanath towards the end of his career, is capable only of a couple of flashy and lucky innings. So Sourav should go firs. And Yuvraj MUST come in right away in his place (Let no one make the mistake of smugling in Sehwag in Dada's place). Then BOTH Laxman and Yuvi will play and add sustance to the Test team. We also need a 3rd seamer(RP Sigh/ Irfan/ Sreesanth/Praveen Kumar). So Dinesh Kartik must go and Sachin must open with Jaffer. If Gambhir, Badrinath and Raina Join the team, there can be replacements/rotation as required. This will create a team from which Sachin, Dravid and Laxman can leave without creating a void.

Yuvraj Singh is good only for ODIs and T20s. Kumble is right about Yuvi - "Yuvraj should never play Tests for India". Sachin will play beautifully until he is 41 or 42. Badrinath or Raina do not have enough ammunition. Sehwag is not that good in either format of the game (irrespective of his talent). Chawla should come in. RP Singh should come in. Dinesh Karthik pokes his nose all the time - he does not score, so he must go.

Your suggestions seems to be daring and bold steps but I like them.........we should plan for tomorrow.....good observations and ideas......let's hope BCCI takes note of this...

RE:India will loose this test
by computer learning on Nov 23, 2007 11:32 PM
India will lost this test, but will win next two tests. Then, they will be tired, very tired. Aussies have already programmed team India's mind (for tiredness) - thus, they will take advantage of the situation and will come out on top winning 4-0 against team India.

I was a critic of Laxman for his defensive batting style. Laxman played superbly today and proved his talent. He in without doubt most talented batsman in the team.
Yuvraj deserves the place in the team but I also think it is not fair to do so at the expense of Laxman. Imagine the team with both of them Laxman and Yuvraj. India will have a formidable middle order. Karthick, Jaffar, and Ganguly will be more vunerable at this moment if they don't perform in the second inning. There is no place for non-performers in the team when players like Yuvraj are sitting on the bench.
RE:Good job Laxman!
by Balaji Krishnamurthy on Nov 24, 2007 08:50 AM
What defensive batting. His batting is a treat for the eyes. If he hasn't unleashed his full range, it is because he has to play at No. 6 and marshall the lower half of the batting.
Get Yuvraj in place of Ganguly. Useful bowler who would provide same economy rate as Ganguly, if needed, best fielder (duh!) and a batsman in sublime form. Ganguly can be rested in the next match, especially if the bounce is better than Delhi's pitch.
RE:hmm
by pankaj kumar on Nov 23, 2007 11:37 PM
well said.bloody ganguly is trying to save his place by scoring 30 and 40 odd runs.he must be immediately replaced by yuvraj
VVS once again proved his class.I feel Wasim Jaffer or Dinseh Karthik to be dropped from tests as both are non performers.Selectors have to give chance to Yuvi and Badrinath inplace of Ganguly and Karthik.
Only Kangaroos know the value of VVS than our stupid selectors.
