ICL & the Brtish premier league
by arun nair on Jul 26, 2007 01:31 PM  | Hide replies

Mr. Shah - please look at the football league in Britain and look at the talent those clubs have given their country..let me remind you that manchester United is owned by an American, Chelsea by a Russian, Liverpool by an American and a number of clubs owned by non-britishers

Also the premier league football has been running for ages and is a separate body from FA which is supposed to be the recognised Football association for the country. Look at what the premier league has done to British football. FA has always united with forces which it considered beneficial for football

if the ICL is formed it will be beneficial for cricket. you dont own the patents for cricket in this country and the BCCI has done nothing much to prmote the cause of cricket in the country. Else we would not be ranked in the lower half of the rankings table both in test and 1 day cricket

Regards

Jay

ICL needs 30 internationals: Jones
TNN / Chandresh Narayanan

MUMBAI, July 25: Even as the rumour-mills are churning out names of players ready to join the Indian Cricket League (ICL), Dean Jones has revealed that they would need a total of 30 international players.

Former Australian star Jones is in charge of operations and drawing up of rules for the inaugural Twenty20 competition that will mark the launch of the ICL in October-November. Jones, alongwith former England captain Tony Greig (member of the ICL executive board), is involved in roping in international players.

"We will only be targetting players who will not be involved with their national teams during October-November. We do not want any player to break his existing national contract. Only those free will come to us. So you work out your math and find out more," Jones told TOI from Melbourne on Wednesday.

As of now Zimbabwe, Bangladesh and West Indies will be free from international engagements around October-November. The tournament will be for a period of 28 days with each of the six-city centric teams playing eight matches in all. The winners take home a total prize money of $1m. "By mid-August we would have signed all those we want for the league," added Jones.

Doesn't it mean the ICL will only be open to retired or semi-retired players? "It is an unfair criticism. They have retired just three months ago. One was a champion (Lara) batsman and two more (Warne and McGrath) have ripped ap

NZ skipper Fleming may join Indian rebels
AFP

SYDNEY, July 26: New Zealand Test captain Stephen Fleming has been approached to play in a multi-million dollar rebel Twenty20 series in India later this year, an Australian media report said on Thursday.

The Australian newspaper reported that Fleming may retire as New Zealand skipper to take part in the breakaway Indian Cricket League (ICL) being bankrolled by the country's largest listed media group Zee Telefilms.

The newspaper cited unnamed cricket sources in New Zealand, India and Australia as saying that Fleming was being sought to captain one of the six teams in the competition.

Competition organisers are reportedly offering Fleming a three-year deal worth 500,000 dollars (440,000 US) annually.

They have already signed up West Indian great Brian Lara and sources close to organisers in India have told AFP that Australian spin legend Shane Warne and a host of other international players were on the verge of signing up.

The Australian newspaper says recently-retired Australian fast bowler Glenn McGrath is among those in negotiations but his former team-mates Damien Martyn and Justin Langer have rejected offers.

Fleming is the first current Test player to be speculatively linked to the competition, all the others have retired.

Fleming, 34, is playing currently county cricket in England.

He retired from One-day cricket after the World Cup but is due to lead the New Zealand Test team to
