this was good Pandurang

What is Super Bowl? I don't know much about it. There is no doubt we need a cleanup in cricket. We Indians have given up our rights to biased selectors like Vengsarkar and our corrupt politicians. If Vengsarkar was any clean, he wouldn't have included players which don't deserve a place in our team.

Damage is done. We need to put this behind and see how this team performs. But, we should never put aside the idea of cleaning up our cricket. Wish rediff and other media help our country take to whatever you called "Super Bowl???"

We need your help media in bringing this awareness to the masses in India.

We can succeed too
by Pandurang Gaunekar on Feb 16, 2007 08:20 AM

Interesting article. In our country, our own politicians are looting us. Our own selectors are taking us for a ride. It is obvious from the team selection, Vengsarkar and our capain have their own agenda.

I happened to be in United States last year. In fact, I came back only last week. What a difference! I was amazed to see how professional are those organisations NFL, NBA and MLB. I watched the NFL Super Bowl. It is a one billion dollar event friends. Look at the way they develop talents from grassroot levels.

Our cricket can be an instant success if we develop our talents with a clear objective of success in our mind. The success factor can set in only if a have a right mechanism built into our development and selection process. That can happen only if we are willing to give up our bias and start focusing on the end goal SUCCESS.

Afsar, do you know your rights
by Jamaklal Pandey on Feb 16, 2007 06:13 AM  | Hide replies

Looks like you need to learn to know your rights. Vengsarkar has made bad decisions and you want to support him. Why only Kumble? What about Sehwag, Irfan, and Tendulkar? Instead of blindly supporting Vengsarkar think it loud. Where is the issue in taking cricket to public if that is going to bring in true talent?

Hello Pandey,

i know what i am and i know my rights...
Can u tell some names who can replace with Sehwag, Irfan and Tendulkar and new talent can capable of these three. Sehwag and Kumble is Dravid's choice.. not the Vengsarkar decision.. and abt Tendulkar.. i still dont understand why u guys always want him to make centuries.. some fifties also valuable scores.. and he is useful with Bowling.. No one replace tendulkar.. he is still best player in the team..

Please reply me with some New and True talent player names who can replaceble with Sachin? can the new talent is capable of world cup pressure playing with big teams in slow WI pitches?

pls think it loud b4 commenting... i hope u reply me with some young talented player names...

Afsar Saheb,

Tendulkar like sugar cane but no juice. Juice is over. Bite, Bite, you get no juice but tooth pain. Tendulkar should leave cricket. I don't like Chappell. But Chappell is not selecting players.

Vengsarkar give Chappell players. What Chappell will do? Vengsarkar give you wood. He ask you,
give life to wood. Will you do? Tendulkar show piece. No more play.Tendulkar and Vengsarkar good friends. Tendulkar should leave now.

And abt Tendulkar... he is still a valuable player in indian team than most of the other players... one u realize when tendulkar retires what he is.. make my word for this..

Crap Article
by afsar syed on Feb 16, 2007 01:58 AM

I did not see such a crap article in recent time.. even sachin look a like article add some humor to lot of readers...

I believe this team is good except the selection of Kumble ( Powar may be appropriate).
Our great GREG did lot of experiments with around 30- 40 youngsters who dont have solid 2000 runs in domestic cricket or around 5- 10 centuries in domestic cricket. They just bring into team after one or two good performances and select in National Team.
The worst thing happens later is our beloved MEDIA give him a big HYPE and make him over confidence on himself. After selecting to National team within a day he will get Ads with BULK amount of money. It is like slow poison for young cricketer... his mind will be diverted to commercial.. and lose concentration on cricket. He will be given 2 or 3 chances... obviously he cannot able to handle the Pressure with his limited experience in domestic cricket then he will be out of international cricket and lose faith on himself.
Can anyone name one cricketer who has continous success in both forms of cricket who brought by GREG with his experimenting.
Sreesanth may be exception in above case but bot completely... he has only 1 test match win performance on his name.. and nothing much success ... in ODI his economy rate is above 5.

what i want to tell is... let the youngsters play for domestic cricket at least 3 or 4 good domestic seasons.. ( aggregate of min 3000 runs and 200 WKts )and based on domestic cricket give him a chance in national cricket..

Most of the people can come with case of sachin that he entered at 16 and did well... cos sachin did not get hyped those days by media.. and obviously no commercial ads..and cricket is just a game for lot of indians in early 90's.. but now in modern era.. every single aspect is being watched under cameras..

i believe Dhoni has to still prove himself by playing in outside sub continent.. we didnot see him much in SA and WI last year. and he has to play in Aus , NZ, ENG yet..

I feel Selectors picked a good team within the limitation we have.. ( but why Kumble?)

I am waiting for ur comments...

Captain and Vengsarkar not happy
by Karina Talwani on Feb 15, 2007 10:42 PM

Captain and Vengsarkar is not going to be happy to hear Sachin has to sit out of the 4th ODI. But they still have their weapon Sehwag in the team to fulfill their intentions. You never know, they may be happy too. If Sachin fails there is going to be an uproar.

Vengsarkar statistics
by Vikram Singh on Feb 15, 2007 07:50 PM

When Vengsarkar with the statistics released by our friend, is selecting a team that includes Sehwag, Irfan, and Tendulkar, don't you think we need some better talent to get involved in the selection process. Isn't the author saying the same thing??

None of these players Sehwag, Tendulkar, Irfan have performed anywhere close to even 60% success rate in the recent past.

Please give me a break friend...

There is a lot to pick
by Gita Chawla on Feb 15, 2007 07:40 PM

18 years back when Tendulkar entered International cricket, he never had any experience in International cricket. Was he given an opportunity or set aside saying he never had any international experience? He started doing wonders. The same way, we could have tried many young talents from our IndianB side or from somewhere else. Again the issue with us is, we don't even explore. Why? because people like Vengsarkar have their own team in their mind. It is not Vengsarkar deciding his meal. He can eat whatever he wants if this was his meal. Who cares? Here is he is making a decision on behalf of hundred crores people. He needs to make sure to field a winning team.

There is every reason for us to get frustrated since we have a system where we give up our rights and let people like Vengsarkar decide our destiny. Won't this be better if cricket was run by a successful business leader instead?

Let's say Irfan and Sehwag are dropped... whom do we pick?
by Maximus Decimus Meridius on Feb 15, 2007 08:58 AM

Here's an argument as to why Irfan is in the team: If he manages to regain a semblance of form, India can play 5 fulltime bowlers. Pathan can bat, we all know that, so he plays as an all-rounder. If he doesnt, remember we only need to pick 11 players, not 15. Same for sehwag. He scores quickly and is a clean hitter. If he regains form, we play him cuz he can bowl fairly well too, should the conditions suit (chances are they will in WI). If he doesnt, stay with the current lot.
Now, what are our options should we drop Irfan and/or sehwag. Sehwag with Raina/Kaif? Raina is out of form, Kaif, who knows. He hasnt played in a year (almost). Neither have had any outstanding contribution over the last few months.
Powar could be a choice, but the squad already has two spinners. We'll probably play only one of them unless the pitch is such that both can play. In which case, having a third quickie is invaluable.
Whom else should we pick? Not tiwari, he's never played at international level, and we dont know how he handles pressure etc. International cricket is a whole differnt ball game, as the likes of Rathod, Thiru Kumaran etc will attest.

Sehwag-> In good form, explosive batsman, decent part time spinner.
Pathan-> If in good form, good allrounder.

Like Donald Rumsfeld said, Sometimes you have to go to war with the army you have not the army you want...

we can set things right
by Vikram Singh on Feb 15, 2007 08:07 AM

I don't know anything about this writer and I have no stakes with the writer either. If you go through the article, other than the fact the writer went little overboard with Vengsarkar, he seems to have assessed the situation very well. Needless to say Vengsarkar's decision was biased; Instead of questioning Vengsarkar, writer should have questioned BCCI for their selection process. Vengsarkar on his part went ahead and made Tendulkar as Vice captain. He included players like Sehwag, Irfan etc. etc. Whatever be his reason, a person like Vengsarkar should have stayed above politics and not included non performers.

Someone in the messageboard gave great examples of pilots and surgeons. Amazing! When India can produce non-failing pilots and surgeons who carry out their acts real-time, everytime, it should be a no-brainer to develop quality sportspersons if the job is with the right person.

This article gives us the opportunity to think in terms of finding ways to take our game to a winning level, develop our sportspersons to meet a larger success ratio. Our current success rate in cricket may not be even 30% as of now. This is not good.

As citizens loving this game, we have a responsibility to contribute to the betterment of our team instead of living with this corrupt setup and getting fooled by selectors and BCCI. After all we are spending time and money to watch this game. We are paying more for all the products we buy because these companies take from us and give that money to disappointing players like Sehwag, Irfan....

May this is time to start the thinking process....
