Problem of plenty
by Rajib Mukherjee on Feb 05, 2007 07:19 PM  | Hide replies

Ranadeb Bose, Amol Mazumdar, Tiwari, Gavaskar. So many good players are out of the current national side. Unlike other countries we definitely have a deep reserve in terms of class and backup. It is really very difficult to pick 11 deserving players out of this talented Indian domestic circuit. Spare a thought for the selectors.

Yes thats true. But when the need arises , pick these guys instead of youngsters like Chawla is what I am trying to suggest.

mumbai are the best ......... but does it matter?
by shyam on Feb 05, 2007 07:01 PM  | Hide replies

mumbai have once again proved that they are the best team in the country.Well done.
Bengal need to be commended as well for showing the gumption to battle it out till the last inspite of the obvious gulf in class between the two teams.
What bothers me is the apathy of the selectors towards consistent domestic performers - for e.g. Ranadeb , Muzumdar, Gavaskar etc.
When the selectors are bold enough to take a gamble on a greenhorn like Piyush Chawla , then why not blood deserving candidates who perform day in and day out.
The zonal policy is really doing grave injustice to many such talented performers. No wonder Cricket as a career option is not so enticing any more.

Shyam, Do you know there is a selector Ranjib Biswal from East Zone? And it is surprising that he never talked about Ranadev Bose during world cup probable 30 meeting. He did not have Ranadev's statistics at that time, how funny :-). Ranadev is a fine swing bowler, he should be selected.

Congratulations to Mumbai. And congratulations to Bengal too, you guys fought with half TEAM INDIA, and because of you tough fight, people would remember you.

Ganguly - again a fighting innings, he is tougher and better than ever.

Zahir - Keep up the good work, bring us the world cup :-)

Tendulkar - You are the man, please do the same in World Cup.

Jafar - Very well played, you are "da cool" and focussed. Keep doing the good work.

Tiwari - I'm sure you'll be selected to the national side soon. Good job.

And a last observation, why Bengal was scoring like a one day match and in a hurry. I felt that they should have played little more watchfully.

Ganguly Zeros are counted.
Ganguly averages go astray.
Zero by other heroes are forgotten.
Another Moom trick.

No it doesnt. Ganguly is great in ODI's but he is not a great test batsman. He is only a fairly good test batsman. His problems against genuine fast bowling will always be his achilles heel. Now, you might say, Steve Waugh didnt play short bowling well either. That's true, but waugh rarely got into trouble with the short ball. Sure, he couldnt hook or pull, but he'd handle it much better than Ganguly does. Don't get me wrong, he is a good player, but not a great - not in the Dravid or Tendulkar or Ponting or Lara sense anyway.

Bad luck - Bengal
by tapabrata maity on Feb 05, 2007 06:46 PM

One bad session has cost them the match. Don't lose heart. Its commendable to paly in the final for 2 consecutive time.Congrats to Paras & his team. Atleast they can now fight back with lot of determination. Better luck-next time.Good performance of Manoj & Ranadeb definitely have been noticed by the national selectors. Have faith on them & continue your good performance.

Ranji final

Mumbai had five international players: In the first innings which was vital for both teams, Jaffer and Sachin scored centuries, Zaheer exploded into the Bengal line-up, and Agarkar gave him good support. Only Pawar did nothing much of note.

Bengal had four internationals: Of them, as many as three didn't open their account in the first innings. Only Rohan gave some fight to Mumbai.

In the second innings the Bengal stars did fight back, but it was too late. And the fourth international, LR Shukla, who even last season had been having a good time with the bat, bagged a pair, and didn't bowl at all.

Thus, Mumbai won on the back of its international players, while the internationals playing for Bengal had one bad session, and lost the match.

Answer to your question is simple. Bengal doesnt have players that are good enough to get selected in Indian team. Only Saurav from Bengal is as good as Sachin, Jaffer, Zaeer and Agarkar. Think babu...
