Well, its sad on Amarnath's part not to be selected as coach. He should understand one thing that if he were made the coach of the Indian team then every player would have compared themselves with Amarnath whenever Amarnath would ask the players to work on a particular topic, which would have surely brought differences between him and the players. See, the problem Pakistan faced when they had a native coach, and see their performance with a foreign coach. The players dont know much abou the coach's personal past history and only know and respect the coach's good things when the coach is a foreigner.
Also, Greg Chappel is an Australian, a soldier of the enemy no.1 team who knows the whereabouts and weaknesses of Australia. and mind U he has to and he will disclose all these points to India for India to beat Australia. This was also thought by the selectors.
So, Amarnath should not be a loud speaker instead sit beside his TV and cheer up the Indian Team.
I still wonder how Amarnath got selected to national team during his days.
I remember old days when Srikkanth used to open for India. He goes after the bowlers and kept a good run rate. When Amarnath comes to bat he helps the boweler to recover from the shock and allow the bowler to dominate the field.
He should feel happy that he has been called for an interview for the post of the coach. It itself a great honour for him.
Once, he called the selectors as a bunch of jokers, today he had his own medicine.
Mr. Amarnath lost fair & square. He was underprepared for the interview and the panel was clearly unwilling to select him for such a high-profile & high-paying job based on what they saw before them. Anyone that publicly makes naive statements like 'I don't have a laptop but, I have a lap', or references to 'Fair & Lovely' etc. does not really understand the requirements of the job in terms of technical or communication skills. Can you imagine the culture of chaos & confusion this guy would perpetuate if he's allowed to talk to the media during events like post-match presss conferences ? Does he realize that a panel which comprised some of his own team-mates during his playing days decided that he wasn't ready for this job? With this whining bit, he's clearly shown that he's infact the biggest joker of all. If he wants to prove that BCCI made the wrong decision, I would challenge him to land a coaching stint with any other country based on his credentials as a professional - then we'll talk. He's using his skin color to hide his own shortcomings as a potential coach of a national cricket team. Get on with your life Jimmy and stop embarassing us- the genuine fans of Team India.
Poor Jimmy should have got three lessons out of the affair. 1 he must look for a fair & lovely wholeseller. 2. he must look for a coach to teach him how to operate a laptop. 3. he must think twice before he opens his mouth.
The BCCI basically doesn't have any integrity....I can see why Amarnath is upset....I'm not sure it will make a difference whether the coach is Amarnath or if it is Chappell....
As for liking presentations....How you present yourself is important in all walks of life; a good interview can give any borderline candidate an edge....Chappell is accomplished in cricket....He is a cricket lifer....He may lack experience as a coach but he was able to win over the board selection committee with his charisma.
While this isn't true about most Indian leaders, it is true about a large number: They have no tact in dealing with subordinates.
The difference between being a Managing Director of Infosys and being coach of the cricket team is that the people you are coaching are generally making a lot more money than the coach....It is the job of the coach to manage the egos of the players....The game has changed....The stakes are higher and there is more money at stake...The pressure to win is higher....
Important to winning for any Indian team is having a "players coach"....That is, the players(especially the stars) should want to play for you....They are no longer playing UNDER you.
It is unfortunate the person of Amaranath's background should throw tantrums at BCCI on not selecting him as India Coach.
Should we not expect one like him more graceful in accepting defeat from a more deserving coach like Greig Chappel ?
On the other hand, now I feel that India is lucky not to have a person like Amarnath as a Coach. He could have been a mean Coach causing more harm than help !
Mohinder Amarnath is amazing! He says, shortly after Greg Chappell was selected, that he was "not at all disappointed"! (http://in.rediff.com/cricket/2005/may/20jimmy.htm) Now, was he talking the truth or lying? If he was talking the truth, why on earth is he raking up the issue of selection now? I am sure he knew that the selection process involved a presentation followed by an interview BEFORE he participated in the same. So one can only assume he was lying when he made that statement! Why is it so difficult, for people like him, to graciously say he was disappointed (nothing wrong with that) on being overlooked since he really fancied his chances, and that he was wishing Chappell good luck, instead of feigning graciousness only to be exposed like this. Shocking! Anyway, a man, who told rediff, that he brought his brother-in-law with him to give the presentation he had prepared because he "didn't know how to operate a computer" doesn't really deserve to be a coach. A coach has to be really clued-in, up-to-date on technology etc., these days.
Again, Amarnath is in the news for criticising the selection of the Indian Cricket Team Coach. Maybe he should have called the committee members including his former teammates Sunil Gavaskar, Srinivas Venkataraghavan and Ravi Shastri, as jokers!
