Thank GOD for small mercies
by Nishank on May 18, 2005 11:12 PM

If anyone and I mean anyone has seen Mr. Malhotra echoing his thoughts on TV -during the India Pak series on some news channel along with the likes of Waqar, Kirti Azad, etc,he wud be turning in the grave at the thought of Malhotra of being the coach. And I thought the BCCI has no brains. Malhotra ertainly doesnt have the gray matter or the finesse to be the Indian coach, and just becoz he hyas coached at various levels doesnt make him the right choice.

Way to go BCCI, & thank go for small mercies

Where is the professionalism?
by Savithran Nageswaran on May 18, 2005 11:07 PM

Frankly, I dont understand what Malhotra's problem is. I think that the most important thing towards coaching the Indian team is to be able to inject some professionalism into it.

The Indian team's coach has to be the quintessential professional and i am sorry to say most of the Indian aspirants dont fall into this category. The players already know what needs to be done at this level, all they need to know is how to do it consistently and in a methodical manner. The only possible Indian origin coach who could be a candidate is Robin Singh. Anybody else is a step down from where the indian team currently is.

Malhotra's comment on John Wright not rectifying Ganguly's problem shows his own coaching mettle in poor light. If he were a professional, he would have invited Ganguly to the Academy on one of his off-days and worked with him to correct the problem. I commend malhotra on identifying it to be a problem though.

There is no place for some cheap misguided nationalism in selcting the coach. We as a nation are not professional enough yet in most of the things we do, so let us take another step forward and hire someone as a coach who can show us how to do it.

Coach job
by S.Mohan on May 18, 2005 10:47 PM

John Wright did a good job. Tom Moody or Sandhu or Rabin Singh will be a right choice. Ask the coach about the players and dont ask the players about the coach.

He should not have said it.
by Andanagouda Patil on May 18, 2005 10:38 PM

Felt very sorry to read that article. These are the feelings of a schoolboy who didnt make it to the school cricket team and started questioning the credibility of those in. Well, probably not many would have voted for Mr Malhotra even if he were to be in the race.
His questioning of the cotributions of John Wright was just too much. His views about Jimmy Amarnath are also not justified.
This probably is the most discussed and debated coach selection in the history of the game. That reflects the passion fot the game in India.
I wish he refrains from making such comments in future and takes things in his stride.

Ganguly
by Anil Khare on May 18, 2005 10:03 PM

"Everybody says John Wright did a good job, but what exactly did he do? He could not rectify Sourav Ganguly's short-pitched delivery problem for five years."

How can a coach rectify the inherent weakness of a particular batsman? With such an attitude Mr. Malhotra does not impress as a coach.

Who is this guy? What has he done for Indian cricket other than playing petty politics? Ashok Malhotra is belittling himself by criticizing "Jimmy"....

""Everybody says John Wright did a good job, but what exactly did he do? He could not rectify Sourav Ganguly's short-pitched delivery problem for five years.""

Yeah, John Wright has done nothing great in his 5 years as coach. The team did well in Australia, and reached the world cup finals, and that's about all I can term as 'good'. But remember, they reached WC finals by beating Kenya in semi-final so I don't feel it was a great performance considering how they lost in the final!

During most of his tenure as a coach, the team was struggling, but we all seem to have forgotten that! We still haven't won a test series outside the sub-continent in last 5 years, remember? We couldn't even beat West Indies!!

On a scale or 10, I would give John Wright only 6!

well...well.... first things first..... he did a comendable job may not be a top class, and the rating u gave was from a random number program or something, ummm....ok.
hes been a great coach, keep in mind we did good and dont rate him if our cricketers dont play to potential, think bout it.
coaches dont make people play, cricketers play the matches and win them and sure not coaches. Do u think a team having the worlds best batsmen needs a coach, its them who do it, play sloppy .... get tooo careful.
u will know when u have to coach someone, and coaching people who have high standards (or who basically dont need one) they need specialists.
think bout it Sumeet,
Think human, Be Indian.

I wish Mr Malhotra would shut up
by gb on May 18, 2005 08:32 PM

I wish Mr Malhotra and others who have been making comments like "What did Wright do?" would shut up. He may be angry at not being interviewed for the vacancy but what has he done as a coach that merits any credibility. There are plenty or other coaching vacancies other than the Indian senior team available. If he feels he should be considered as a candidate worthy of consideration he should get out there and get another coaching job and do well at it to prove himself instead he has sat around and finds the time to rubbish the previous coach who did more for the team than any other coach in recent history.

one more sucker crying over lost oppurtunity
by Kalyan Reddy Kasarla on May 18, 2005 08:10 PM

Here comes one more person questioning John Wright, he says John didn't rectify sourav's problem, but also says team won b'cause sourav motivated the team, how come a person who can motivate 10 players with him can't motivate himself to find a solution to his own problem. you could visibly sense that he was upset that he wasn't being interviewed or given a coaching job. Mr.Malhotra its not an insult if u are selected for for the final four of an interview process and are not selected, if that is an insult then god help u and u'r thought process because according to u'r logic everyone who goes to an interview gets an job and 1 billion indians should have had jobs already

One more grumpy guy!!!
by Shyam on May 18, 2005 08:00 PM

He is trying to make a case for him and madan lal but i remember how delhi players felt for Madan Lal as a coach..all he used to say was "jam ke khelo, dil laga ke khelo" ;) ..now thats not what today's players want from a coach do they? He is so negative in his comments..first he says Amarnath doesnt deserve to be there ..if he doesnt then why do you worry whether at the end BCCI select him or not? Now if he will be selected this guy will say he doesnt deserve it and if BCCI wont select him he will say see why did they interview him? He questions wright's ability but then he should understand coache's are not magicians..if coaches were able to do everything than how come after years and years even under Indian coaches most of the Indian players had consistent problem with playing on bouncy pitches?? These guys first should produce result as their credentials and point it to that only rather than making negative comments about one of the best indian coaches ever! Is he blind or cant he check record of John Wright as coach abroad and in India?
