Mr.Umrigar's correct.

First of all, thanks to Mr.Umrigar for bringing this 'obstinate' point up!Many people say that he's the best captain and everything but he himself is not of any use to the Indian team.I also read many comments on the article saying 'who is Poly Umrigar?'And some comments said Yuvraj is in the team because of captain's mercy! Not at all!The captain is in the team because of someone's mercy. He would always stay in the team because of someone's mercy.

well if the bat doesnt do the talking it is the criticism tht talks and if he keeps raising the bat then there r applauses by the same ppl who did the talking before.when u did applause a person who did as many as 24oneday centuries how cud anyone critisize him ....with the responsibility of captaincy there is always a pressure on his batting.let me make a point clear tht when sachin felt the same pressure to his neck of the bottle at the time of his captaincy he had given it up but our dada is trying to ease the pressure of himself and make the team come out in flying colours....for this v need to stop critising and keep encouraging at the time of his failures....i say this bcos i am not an strong admirer of him but a strong admirer of team-india

Dear respected Polly Umrigar

I fully agree with your comments. Out of this column, your comments on Ganguly and Sehwag was the most correct one in terms of their play. I agree with you that when sehwag is in form, the selectors can take him and on Ganguly is concerned, his contribution in the last 20/25 ODIs is nothing and also in the Test absolutely waste. Selectors should thing how fast they can take him from captaincy.

thanks

Let rahul keep wickets
by sunny sharma on Oct 15, 2004 07:39 PM

Playing 7 seven batsmen in one day team has clicked for india and has led to greater achievements so i think rahul should continue keeping.

Thank god for that!

I am glad Ganguly is an obstinate captain. I wish Ganguly would go to these old honks and tell them in the way Douglas Jardine told Plum Warner: "I am not here to win friends. I am here to win the Border-Gavaskar trophy." But I am glad he doesn't pay much attention to these folks.

I don't agree to this obstinate thing

I don't agree to this obstinate thing tht Mr.Umrigar says..Ganguly is by far the best Indian Captian..though we havn't won manby tournaments in the past few years , we have performed pretty well & reached so many finals..& tht counts as success..players like shewag are needed by the team..though he is hav'g a bad patch , he is still a class act whn flow'g..He had his share of bad Luk in the past few months..& he will show his class very soon !

Umrigar's view on captaincy
by S.Narayan on Oct 13, 2004 01:01 PM  | Hide replies

He has given a plain appraisal of the present Indian cricket team and its captain. Though he had mentioned only two players namely Bungar and Bangani it is an open secret that North-South discrimination still exists in team selection for Test matches.Capable players from TamilNadu or Andhra are not given proper chances to exhibit their talent and form as they are picked up for only one or two matches in a series.Inspite of repeated failures Mumbai players somehow get berth in the team !with higher level/captain recommendations.Unless this bias is eliminated Indian team may not have winning future.

As you mentioned, our team has done exceedingly well and ofcourse we could not win the finals. I dont give much marks for our team. We got about 14/16 final chances, out of this we got one or two and when you take percentage win it is just 4 to 5%. What is the use of a student has been scoring 90% and above till 9th std. and he fails in the tenth std. what is the use.

Thanks

Ganguly is an obstinate captain

Well if you mean obstinate as "headstrong", I do agree.
But if its something else then I need to say "You have become old and you should take rest". Till date I have not seen a player like Ganguly. He has proved himself a great player and also a great captain. I do agree the captain prior to him are jealous and can't see his success but truth is never hidden. Every player has a soft corner for some one and so do Ganguly has but don't forget this is the team which has given us immense success. Its the time which is not with them. As we know all great players have passed through this phase, I feel you too. So lets support them rather criticizing them
