Who shall guard the guardians?
by Ramesh Kapoor on Jan 25, 2004 12:49 AM

Hi Prem,

Like my other comments on the subject of umpiring, which have not been printed, nor do I expect this one will. I had stated what Umpire Dickey Bird told us when we were aspiring to take ACU (Association of Cricket Umpires) Exam that physical and mental fitness was the prime issue. Age wise I am now nearly 65 and have in the U.S.A. for nearly 18 years. Dickey Bird quit from umpiring (and he was a first class umpire) when he was in late 40s or early 50s. The rule of the game do not dictate the age factor but like a cricket player will not play competitive cricket in his mid-forties and above, so should be the umpires. Another factor which you have ignored in your article is the age of the match refree. Clive Lloyd and his contemporaries are of my age or even older. They have been past players with some old ugly memories and for them to forget and apply judicial decision, in itself, would be considered partial and bias. As for BCCI, Dalmiya is a politician, he will "doublecross that bridge when comes to it" because he may be aspiring to head the ICC once again. (FYI I still hold my ACU certificate and it is framed.)

BUCKNOR : Rediculously Intolerable
by Pankaj on Jan 25, 2004 12:22 AM

Making a mockery of player like Dravid, whose sprit in the game can be questioned at no time, in front of international audience, was unprofessional, unwarranted and punsihable offence, Parthiv, just because he has kiddish look dosent deserves what he was pointed at incorrecty in a rediculously intolerable way.
I wonder how can such acts get unnoticed from ICC.
Over all what is BCCI doing here.... Is it just for collecting money signing contract!!! Does it needs to be reminded to stand for the national pride, that is wrongly rampaged by some stubborn hard headed individuals who are against the sprit of game only trying to show their authority at unneede unwarranted time..
Time to go BUCKNOR.
If somebody has time please write a online petition to ICC demanding punitative action against BUCKNOR and show him the way out of umpiring.
Time to go BUCKNOR....

by saby on Jan 24, 2004 11:48 PM

its pretty much clear the partisan fines and complaints are highlited by media & umpires without giving due considertaion to the situation ..and when its come to team like australia they are as always partial.this is unfair and someone of stature of loyd is doing this .i think Indian authorities have every right to file for an explaination..and should seek the explaination to avaoid further one sided decisions by the cricketing fraternity..who just always over look the deeds of teams likes of Aussie, SA and england ..is it racism don't know but its definetly favoritism..please dalmiya act get some respect for our fighting boys ..they r doing great don't u think so

Racist ICC
by Ninad on Jan 24, 2004 10:14 PM

The ICC is blatantly racist. Whenever a non-Australian or English player is successful, the ICC officials seem to make them a target. The Indian Cricket Board should realize that it has by far the largest market for cricket, and Indian officials should be in charge throughout. India is the most important cricket playing nation, and should take advantage of this.

by Sarang on Jan 24, 2004 10:11 PM

Mr. Panicker , if you can tell us your age , we'll be happy to relieve you from one of your many blunders. I can understand it's hard to be awake all night & then post an article on the site. Please look into the following sentence & let us know as to what was going on in your mind.

Steve Bucknor is 57+ (May 31, 1946), S Venkatraghavan is 58+ (April 21, 1945), David Shepherd is 63+ December 27, 1949).

fines on Indians
by Ram on Jan 24, 2004 08:55 PM

This has been happening regulary and no one seems to raise any concerns and do anything about it.
It is disappointing that even in the post colonial era the mantra seems to be "white is right."
this really is gross injustice to our players and until we stand up and fight, pile up a catalogue of all the injustices meted upon us,take it to the ICC and ask for their explanation over the overt double standards will things move forward.

Rules to regulate ICC and the socalled Umpiring greats.
by Karthik Chandrasekaran on Jan 24, 2004 08:08 PM

Dear Mr.Prem Panicker,
I am extremely happy that atleast there is one person or a small group who are around to sort these things to the public with statistics(which many of us donot have a chance to get correct).People like Kapil can give his own verdicts on things that were pretty evident. But, not on such really sensible things, though he was voted the best cricketer. I donot exactly if he really realises all these. He gives some controversial columns, which serve no purpose and shuts all his....(sorry for this harsh comment),when required.
And for Dalmiya...I exactly donot know what he is up to.He probably does more of marketing and shies away from such evident matters.Maybe you remember, this sort of 100% biased decisions against the Indiansubcontinent is highly disgusting.Similarly, when once,Jayasuriya was given out(maybe wrong decision or so...am not sure), he showed a little bit of frustraton in his dressing room or within those premises and was charged by that. But, people like Damien fleming,Mcgrath, slater and others have shown disrespectful behaviour on the field and noone is there to question.BCCI should protest and protect the our Players.Enraged Karthik

Superannuate the umpires
by Dr T S Raman on Jan 24, 2004 07:45 PM

The original dictionary definition of "superannuate" is, "dismiss or discard as too old for use or work etc." It should be applied to cricket umpires. Let us start with the great Bucknor.
