who will guard the guardians
by VISHAL SHUKLA on Jan 28, 2004 03:22 AM

hey prem
i agree with what u have written this is not the first instance when indians have been treated like this or for tht matter an asian team has been treated like this....remember the mike denness incident...and it is high time now tht the BCCI takes a stand..they should remember tht BCCI is the richest board and its powerful than many other boards...and if it doesnt use its powers to protect the confidence of their players then when will it use..remember what happenned to sachin tendulkar when was given out wrongly in the first test..he lost his confidence i agree he was down in form but bad decisions like this brings the worst memories back and u tend to loose ur footings...there might be different views but i still say its high time now tht BCCI does something abt it..who stood besides harbhajan when he was called for chucking...and now he has proved his worth. BCCI should leave cowardice and come in front to help the players rights and confidence...tell them not to worry they r backed 1 billion supporters if not more...and being a journalist its ur duty to get the message thru to the authorities..so please do the needful and make us proud..jai hind.

I completely agree with ur story, actually i was kind of think abt writing abt the same thing as a comment some where, especially send an email to the BCCI reminding of the things that our players were being fined for are not even mentioned when the Aussies do it. I think there should be some action taken against such incidents....this only makes me think abt one thing....is there still racism in cricket?

if steve waugh did exceed his limit by 45min, then it is time that the BCCI did something about it. this is the time to use india's superior commercial position in cricket to bring about justice and equality in the game...thanx

I agree with your views in that the ICC should look into a "retirement age policy" for umpires - maybe even move them gradually out of the limelight. These same umpires might be moved off the field into third umpiring roles, where they have the luxury of taking their time to give their decisions.
Second, if Ganguly and Dalmiya are as pally as they are made out to be, the former should use that to impress upon Dalmiya the reason the BCCI should take a strong stand against the ICC - after all, isn't the BCCI still the biggest contributor into the ICC coffers? What good the money if you can't use that to your advantage? Dalmiya, if anyone (being a businessman), should realise the trump card he has at his disposal.

I agree with Prem Panicker on his comments about umpires & Umpirng standards. But 2 pictures which worry me is:(1)I am not convinced that Dravid was trying to remove the gum from the ball.It looks like he is polishing with something.(2)Yuvaraj feigning injury while fielding .It was obvious. In a short period he returned & fielded brilliantly as ever.In the conversation with Harsha Bhogle after the match he took off the earphone when asked about the injury?.Padmanabhan

Steve Bucknor is 57+ (May 31, 1946), S Venkatraghavan is 58+ (April 21, 1945), David Shepherd is 63+ December 27, 1949).

If David Shepherd was born in 1949,how come he is older than Steve Bucknor (1946) or S Venkatraghvan (1945)...

Dear Kavin, David Shepherd is 64 alright. Either Prem is wrong or it is a typographic error that the year has been given as 1949 instead of 1939!

good article
by budha on Jan 26, 2004 08:02 PM

a very well descripted article...but problem is
india(and sub continent teams in particular) has
suffered such injustices for a long, long
time.....while india and Sl and pak players are
fined or punished, aussie or south african players
get away with the same mistakes......i guess the
officials still are in the 19th century and think
cricket only to be a whites game and only for them
to dominate...
