India snatch defeat from the ocean of victory.
by Rajesh on Nov 19, 2003 12:21 AM

I had high hopes (after the win v/s NZ) for the final (Am I foolish to have hopes...maybe you are right). Catches win Matches...so very true today & always. 7 dropped & still the Aussies scored only 235, credit to spinners for that. Excellent breakthrough by Agarkar when he got Glichrist. But what happens next...3 sitters dropped. VVS (Very Very Sloppy) Laxman makes a mess of simplest of chances (once a safe pair of hands). He couldn't see the ball or what. Why does a slip fielder need shades? Fashion statement? Did Gavaskar (one of the safest slip fielders) wear any in his days?
The spinners (regulars & part timers) did great. Credit to Dravid for trying different options. Kartik was superb. Wonder why he is not on the flight to Australia. If only 2 spinners are to go then it should be Harbajan and Kartik. Dasgupta....that's one selection I can't fathom. Even thinking most optimistically, still cant find a reason for his going instead of Thilak Naidu. I still feel Kirmani/More & Co should send Kartik & Naidu instead of Kumble & Dasgupta.
To end..If we don't learn from today's and past mistakes (how many more..guys), then Aussie tour will be our Waterloo and Panipat combined.

Tailenders' tale....
by prashanth on Nov 18, 2003 11:56 PM

A good report to start with. I had the patience to watch each and every ball inspite of the reckless fielding by the Indians and the tame surrender (or should I say dearth of reasoning) by the tailenders.
It was really horrifying to see so many catches and catches being dropped. But the adage should have been 'catches and stumpings win matches'. We saw some exceptional fielding skills shown by the aussies. The match was still on till the tailenders collapsed (pardon me, Agarkar is not a tailender, he's definitely the best allrounder India has at present ,and one of the better but less trusted bowlers). It was really lack of common sense on the part of the tailenders to have given their wickets away in such pathetic fashion. All they had to do was give support to Agarkar. But they clearly showed today that the Indian lower order had never improved. It was like this all the time.....just one or two sixers here n there made us think that the problem had been solved.
But definitely the aussies played better n deserved to win. It was the closest India could have come in a final against the aussies. Wishing the team all the best for the trip down under.

Y the Indian players are getting weaker in action when they face Australia.

I think outside the ground India can take over Aus,as Indians are strong in speech cricket........

oops they did it again
by mani on Nov 18, 2003 10:18 PM

ok so we lose again, but some questions for the indian selectors (would have asked even if india had won):

one wonders on what basis was aviskar salvi selected for the finals and for the australian tour instead of murali kartik. salvi's bowling speed hardly touches 125 km/hr, doesnt seem to have any line or length(and that actually doesnt matter for his speed). players like gilchrist and hayden will screw him in australia or anywhere. just wonder if anybody with a macgrath type action can hope to get selected in the team and they expect him to be a wicket taker.
while murali kartik doesnt get selected even after performing well in the triseries. maybe salvi has a relative in the selection board.

and why did our board announce the team for australia before the triseries final. they could as well have done it after the big day. but than its the indian selection board which obviously doesnt believe india has any chance in australia so any player is ok to go there. and yes please ignore poor fielding standards of indian team, its beyond repairs, from wicketkeeper to laxman.

Whats with the Selectors
by ragz on Nov 18, 2003 10:00 PM

What more can one say, after watching so many catches dropped and stumpings missed. What do the selectors have in mind?? Including someone like Salvi(zero exp), who cant even field(couldnt even watch him run) and excluding Murali Karthik the only bowler who seems to have been treated with respect by the aussies, the selectors have proved yet again that they care two hoots about the upcoming test series. Salvi got to bowl just 3 overs in the match, when he is supposed to be a frontline seamer. Watching Dravid fumble behind the stumps was sore, although Parthiv could have been expected to do a better job. There was a clear lack of sense in including Salvi and having Dravid keep the wickets. Seems like the selectors keep setting newer and lower datums for IQ every passing week. Their actions can only be described as random at best. Sitting in the US of A and watching a stupid game at an unearthly hour(4 AM!!), folks like me waste one full day. We have left the country and I guess its also time for us to leave the game to idiots back home.

Very Very Special Laxman
by Pradeepta Panda on Nov 18, 2003 09:56 PM  | Hide replies

Do you believe in the adage that the tough guys keep their best for the big occassion. Here is our VVS Laxman who dropped four catches in the final! A person of such special ability along with his batting exploits truely make him Very Very Special. Because if you do not pick him everybdoy claims it's a bad decision by the selectors. Can you imagine this guy in the world cup squad and doing the same thing in the final, may be the final score line should be reading something like 500/0!!!!!!!!
This is our VVS Laxman, not to forget his other special extra caricular activies like throwing away wicket when the going is easy (May be like Sandip Patil, who's this special ability only help Azhar break into the Indian squad to teach Indian the art of fielding after a long long time!) and also mixing up with his partner while running so that the guys (generally Dravid, Sachin or Ganguly) doing well get run out or get himself out and make a SPECIAL situation out of ordinary.
Truely SPECIAL, Long live his fans!!!
Sometime I feel he does not deserve his place even in the test squad!(Remember Azhar's dropped catch at Lords help Gooch make 333).As long as VVS is in Indian squad fielding can !!

one batsman short?
by shine on Nov 18, 2003 09:55 PM

dont understand the logic of going with one batsman short. there is no need to include 5 mainstream bowlers; once 4 wickets are down, it will be cake-walk for them now. hope it does not get that further.
