Gift to Tendulkar
by Gangadhar G. Barve on Aug 14, 2003 06:20 AM  | Hide replies

The value of the duty waver given on behalf of the people of India by the GOI amounts to about 1 paisa per Indian. Are the protesters so poor that they can not appreciate a world beating performance by an Indian? When budding cricketers from other countries are wanting to become future Tendulkars, it looks more rediculous. Even rich Indians when they come back from abroad are given duty free allowance at the airports which when the passengers per annum are multiplied by the allowance per head, will amount to more than 100 crores. Media should be ashamed to give publicity to such small minded persons without simultaneously criticising them. I apologise on their behalf to Sachin who should keep playing well by ignoring such people

Sachin Tendulkar

Let him keep the car. He deserves it. Instead of paying this huge amount of duty, let him pay 25-50% of it to a charity of his choice.

not a issue
by gaurav on Aug 14, 2003 03:10 AM

this is not that a big issue that people are making there is no such need to collect the money it should be welll known to the people who are collecting the money just to make sachin feel embarce that he alone can feed there children and it is not that if a person is good in wealth that he passes it for no use and without any major purpose......

DUTY WAIVER
by Ajay Thapa on Aug 14, 2003 02:29 AM

Good Day to all Hindustani,
I agree with the PPS group. No game is big or small, unfortunately in India only Cricket is widely covered and promoted which is in any case not our National game. We have won only one world cup. But in Hockey we have won world cup as well as Olympics. What about those players?
I am the winner of Gallantry award "Shaurya Chakra", which I got to save the village from LTTE attack and the conflagrating fire. What I got is just a investiture ceremony. Today when I come back to my homeland I have no waiver. The Indian Customs deals with me and the other passenger as if we are criminal. They don't have manners to talk to the citizens of India. They just ask for money, hide passports etc. of the passengers. we pay duty for chocolates, shoes, 4 bottles of liquor for which we paid ourselves. Why this dicremination? Why this thing is much publicised. ust a flat response of 'PAY THE DUTY' is more then enough. This is a bad habbit in our country where wrong things gets publicity.
Just charge the damn duty and finish the matter. Good work PPS. In case duty is collected it could lit many poor people houses as it is a huge amount.
Jai Hind ! PPS
Ajay

It is a shame...
by P.V.SATHISH KUMAR on Aug 14, 2003 01:57 AM

It is a shame to know that a player of such caliber and an individual of such character has asked the government to waive the import duty on his Ferrari. If he says that he cannot afford it let him not accept the gift. Or Let Ferrari pay for the tax as well. This will set a bad example. All that tendulkar has achieved in life is succeding in his proffession that he is passionate about. He is indebeted to the nation as he must be thankful to the millions of fans who cheered him up. BEcause of whom he has earned so much of money by being a Brand ambassodor of brands such as PEPSI. THe other alternative is to ask the Finance Minister to pay for the tax. India is a nation where we have tax payers who don;t even have slippers to wear and walk. This shows the pathetic state of a affairs in our government. THe ministers don;t even know the basics of running a government forget about the constitution...

Regretfully a patriotic india from UK

This is not sportsmanship
by Rajesh Pendurkar on Aug 14, 2003 01:53 AM

I'm a die hard fan of Tendulkar, but he asking for the duty to be waived on his Ferrari has made me wonder "Is this a person the coming sports persons should look up to?"

Why should the common Indian bear the burden of the duty when he can very well afford to pay it?

Sachin, if still you have some sportmanship left, please take back your request for duty wavier & pay the duty or else return the car. On the kind of roads we have what good is a Ferrari anyways.

the present day GOD!!
by Parminder on Aug 14, 2003 01:33 AM

I consider cricket my religion and Sachin my god.Now is the question of we taking tax from God. Well shouldn't God set standards for the common to follow.

Sachin has never had a controversy and I see him as the future prime minister of India so he should not involve himself into any controversy and pay the money. Some sponsor should come forward and pay the money for him and let him concentrate on cricket.

Shameful behaviour by press and people and now COurts
by Pranshu Saxena on Aug 14, 2003 12:40 AM

Hi,

The NGO who insulted Sachin by begging funds to pay for import duty would need to do that every day day after day and including weekends for next 1051 years and 10 months to pay the duty for the ferrari.

An import duty for Ferrari is 4.3 crores or almost 1 million dollars. Even a person of Sachin 's wealth would be hard put to pay such a duty.

So, the alternate was for Sachin to snub the Italian motor company which gifted the car and thus, lower india 's prestige and honor by not accepting the gift or do so and depend on Indian govt 's help which was given.

20% of Indians nominated the greatest moment since independence to be the 83 world cup win so cricket is associated with national honor by millions of Indians and sachin has always been there doing his best to uphold that honor.

What a show of gratitude by his countrymen!
regards
Pranshu B
