Sachin shows typical bhikari characteristic
by amol on Aug 14, 2003 03:26 PM  | Hide replies

Actualy people like him (having lot of money) should never think like this. He is making millons of money and then why is he trying to avoid tax which he can pay easily. At last that burdon is going to come on heads like us (working middle class). How is our goverment also permiting this? If they realy care players then they should help players from other game instead of cricket.

customs duty waiver for sachin
by T.S.Gopalakrishnan on Aug 14, 2003 02:46 PM

I could not see anything wrong in sachin asking for

a waiver.Itis for the government to decide the

waiver or not.He got the car for his achievement

and the least we can do is to waivw the customs duty.

I do not thing there is any loss in revenue to

the taxpayer since he would not have accepted the gift

if he had to pay a huge sum as duty.Be reasonable

and recognise the achievement and be proud to be

part of the encouragement

Encouraging!
by Raj Kumar Bhardwaj on Aug 14, 2003 01:58 PM

This is excellent! The primary fault is that our political Netas imagine themselves to be monarchs, free to spend the taxpayer's money as if it were their personal property. Tendulkar HAS TO PAY the import duty, just like any other citizen of India. Another recent example of the politician's grandiose munificence at the expense of the public exchequeur is the money given to Ustad Bismillah Khan. I am as much an admirer of the Khan Saheb as of Tendulkar, but is it the duty of the people of India to support his entire "family" of 70 members? Another politician from Bihar (who resembles Alfred Newmann of the MAD magazine), some time back gave Rs.50,000 in Delhi to a rikshawalla (originally from Bihar) for the "heart surgery of his son". Another example is Uttar Pradesh: it was reported four years ago that UP chief ministers, and Governors during Presidents Rule, have disbursed a staggering Rs 68 crore of public money with no questions asked. The CAG had objected to these grants being given to religious bodies or to organizations based on castes.

Very bad
by Ramakoti Reddy V on Aug 14, 2003 01:04 PM

It is very bad that sachin has actually asked for tax exemption and our ministers as sachin asked, so they have not thought of anything else but sachin's batting skills, granted without second thought. This is really pity and esepcially when the arjuna awards committee was told to scale down it's count just because there is no money(what a pity in a country like india..);-).

The nation wud have been very very happy if our ministers or fiat comp who love sachin and his batting, should have actually paid the tax also instead of making holes to exchequer....

( this was happened some time back in pak also and then prime minister told taht cricker taht i can't waive the tax my boy but i can pay on ur behalf..what a nice guesture to acknowledge and what a way to respond on people's behalf..!!!)

By all means he has to pay the duty as he hasn't got it as a title of any tournament . It is a gift and the duty should be paid

Custom Duty on Tendulkar's Imported Car
by Adi Tata on Aug 14, 2003 10:28 AM

It is regreted that a person of Sachin's calibre should have asked for a waiver of custom duty on his imported car.It was a bad precedent.

Waiver of Duty - Tendulkar's car
by Partha on Aug 14, 2003 09:32 AM

Sachin should not have asked for the waiver in the first place - he should set an example by paying up the duty - there is no way when common earners beyond Rs. 40000 pay taxes as to why this guy who earns only in millions cannot pay taxes which is rightfully claimable by the statutes !!

Sachin - show some responsibility and pay up !

HC notice to Tendulkar
by A. Venkatesh on Aug 14, 2003 07:28 AM

With due respect to our all-time great Sachin Tendulkar, knowing that Customs Duty is levied on an imported car, perhaps even a gifted car, it would have been better for him either to politely refuse the gift or pay the Customs Duty in vogue if he was inclined to accept the gift. I agree that there should not be any departure from rules for anybody, high or low.
