A STAT: "Every two weeks an elder goes to the grave, carrying last spoken word of his culture." So an entire philosophy, a body of knowledge about the natural world gleaned over centuries goes away. And this happens every fortnight. -Phil Borges Epilogue: And they impose hindi when u have to fight english.
With due regards to arun, i as a kannadiga would like to point out that regional and local issues are taking front seat mainly because they were never addressed. Let me explain what is happening in karnataka. First of all we are unfortunate to have JD(s) as our regional party (though they claim they are national party). Whenever there is an election, congress(read sonia) sends some one who diesn't understand karnataka to make decisions, while BJP sends some clerk. BJP is little smart in that it gives importance to local issues, even RSS believes vibrant republic is the way to go. Karnataka with 5 crore population is not parochial. Neither TN, Maharastra or andhra for that matter. Though all of indian states have common cultural roots, they are all different, robost outgrown branches. And they are sustainable. With all the talk about amrerica and france, france is of same size as karnataka. What suits france may be good enough for karnataka. But for india? come on. America despite being monolithic culture is a strong republic with lot of power vested on States, municipals, and towns. India is infact a good candidate for republic. I don't understand why local issues are not national issues. Main problem as they pointed out in later conversation is our shallowness in politicians, media and people who vote.

Siddu...be proud to call yourself Indian, it took 1000 years for this freedom, since 1857-1947 many have died, just to be called Indian. India is a young country and we will face lot of challenges, we are a family and we will take care of all our family with love and brotherhood..be it Hindu, Muslim, Christians, Sikhs..this is short life on Earth, lets not differentiate and loose valuable lifespan. Live smart and let others live.
Temperatures are increasing day by day, we need to spread the green campaign, India needs at least 25 Billion trees in 15 years. Trees store water, reduce temperature and makes life waah. We can do it, we should use our energy for this kinda cause before we die.
We need for focus on energy and give some invention to the world(developing world).

so we are to follow your suggestion, we'll have a "Lok Sabha" in every state with a PM. tomorrow it will come down to municipal and panchayat level..... look boss national elections should be fought on national issues and to resolve the state/local issues we have state govt and other local bodies.....
Yeddyurappa’s budget had encouraging news for several sections of the population — farmers, high school students, officials, researchers, patients, alike.
The decision to send 1000 farmers abroad on a study tour will expose them to different types of farming methods. Further a provision of Rs 750 crores as a support price for farm produce is good news. Yeddi has given a fillip to ornamental fishery and has given an impetus to the establishment of goshalas for the protection of milch cattle. Extending free power to farmers with upto 10 HP pumpsets, introducing e-tendering to bring in transparency, allotting Rs 2 crore for reviving the river Arkavathy and establishing 500 foot bridges in the Malnad to bring connectivity to remote villages, are all heartening to note.
CM also deserves to be congratulated for providing free health insurance to poor families. Another noteworthy point, is the support given to the development of sandalwood cultivation, green villages and medicinal plants

Those 1000 farmers will have to shell out through their noses to get to go abroad. Most of them will be landlords who will cough up half the expenses through bribes. It will be used as another opportunity for the agri and land officers to get rich. When our farmers do not have means to get a square crop every year, what will they do by going abroad? Give them loans. Get broadband connectivity to every village so that thousands of farmers can see what is happening abroad through teleconferencing sessions.
Why India was ruled by the foreign powers for so long? It was because of the same factor that we are seeing right now. It is: REGIONALISM. I would call it an individual EGO. Every person want to serve his interest first. We do not have the team spirit as the people in the other advance country have. If some party worker is unhappy with his boss then he sees no point in debating it internally in the party. This is because either his EGO is too big or the party do not promote internal democracy to have such debate. So ultimately we are in the path of self destructing ourselves by not learning from the history. Is desh kaa koi bhavishya nahin...

Regonalism is the cotribution of both the Congress and BJ Party. That has emboldened the syncophants to go for smaller regional parties, whenever it suited them to come to a position when despite being the 02 truly national parties of India, they have no option but to woo the 'local' parties for the formation of the govt. History has proved again and again that India has been overrun by foreign invasions owing to the bickerings of the then 'rajas' amongst them for their own interests. With the bickering of so many for the post of the PM one doesn't know whether there would be more 'countries' born as was Pakisthan - East and West! Arunachal, Kasmir ,maybe many more areas will come under 'dispute' making India or shall we say Bharat for a change, weaker still! We cannot giveup our 'bickerings, anyway.

Instead of saying 'Kuch nahie ho sakta' or 'koi bhavishya nahie', why not say 'hum iss desh ka bhavishya banayenge'? why give up everytime there isa challenge? if gandhiji were to say the same words, would you and me be even talking on this discussion board?
Ladli Laxmi Yojana scheme was started by the BJP govt in MP in 2006. In a very short time, it has proved to be one of the most successful social welfare schemes in the history of the state.
Under the scheme, the state govt buys saving certificates of Rs 6,000 each year for five consecutive years for every girl born in a family.
The girl gets Rs 2,000 after she completes her Class 5, another Rs 4,000 after she completes Class 8, Rs 7,500 after she completes the Class 10, Rs 200 per month in her 11th standard and a lumpsum amount of Rs 1,18,000 after she enters the 12th standard or, alternatively, attains the age of 18.
The principal aim of the scheme is to eliminate school dropout among girl students and to encourage them to study at least upto pre-college level. Kanyadhan Yojna: state gives Rs 7,500 for poor families during the time of a girl's marriage, and Janani Suraksha Yojna: state provides all economic & health support to a pregnant woman till the time of delivery. This is what I (as an Indian) call development of girl child; unfortunately no media will project this, but will project BJP as T@liban if some Sene beats a girl who goes to a pub only coz it happened in a state ruled by BJP. This bias is going to be the undoing of the Congress

Yes, rather than making sure that every kid gets into proper schools, reviewing the performance of govt teachers, it is nice to just throw money away at poor people isnt it? 95 percent of the so-called beneficiaries of these fly-by-night schemes dont even get to finish primary school.
Local issues dominate national issues because people don't care for national issues.Marathis care for Marathis, Punjabis care for Punjabis and may I dare say for Pakistanis, Bengali for Bengalis, Southie for southies.Great going India. But only fools will be surprised. One question that we need to ask is Why after being united twice under Maurya and Gupta empire India broke apart. That's why it's said that History often repeats itself and the reason is people as a group seldom change.

Katloo Pathan, Speak only for Yourself. Before U say Punjabis care for Pakistanis...maybe we do to a small extent on Humanatarian grounds only..Punjabis loyaly lies with India....you can bet on one thing Punjabis (In Indian Punjab) are patriots Number 1...When Pak fires a bullet the first to block the bullet from piercing the heart of India is literally Punjab....If your own loyalties lie acrross the border with Pakistan than you are welcome to comfortable life under Taliban.

Khalistan movement happened after 1972.All the wars can be attributed to post-partition hatred towards Pakis. But all that have changed as old generation who suffered at the hands of moslems have died.New generation is in love with porkis and that's why u have khalistan.

Mayavati will not make it to that level. That will kill BJP in just one year. I think NDA is smarter than that...
She can not share anything with anybody. She will be a no one in no time..
Like what obama did, we need someone to bring home the perpective of change, a hope, and lighting at the end of the tunnel..who can unite India as an Indian.
Right now people are fooled at all levels by politicians by using caste, religion, region and what not..we need to have a person who can stand above ground and say that under me we will work togather as India and will become an Indian. We were reaching the state where we were gettng united finally but then: 1. Mandal happened, dividing people on caste 2. Babari Masjid Demolition: Dividing people on religion 3. Fundamentalism: Dividing people on how much you can force someone to behave in some particular manner...
In this all, what was killed was our identity as Indian. We started to behave as an state, as a community, as a individual, but seized to be an Indian.
We need to get a United India movement in our thoughts, our committment and our action. We have relearn that Divided we fall, United we stand. We need to undo the teachings of our past and get back to fundamentals of living together.
We need to promote: 1. United India 2. Clean India 3. Prosporus India 4. Progressive India 5. Educated India 6. Well behaved India 7. One and only One India..

passing,
Nobody is perfect. But find something closer. That's the best bet we have. Nationalism is what you are takling about in essence.
You said Babri Masjid demolition divided people (Yes I am a BJP fan now)... Is there any country in the whole world where icons slavery is still maintained as sacred places? NO it is only in India, where we worship these icons of slavery like Babri Masjid or Taj Mahal etc..
Silam invaded India and British invaded India and we still worship them and then you want to build a one nation???
First of all we need an identity. Solution is Nationalism. BJP is probably only party in India is talking about nationalism.
India is not secular and can not be secular. First of all we need to throw away that dream.

What he did was give hope..now on ground you can change everything overnight, but atleast you can try to change it. What we are lacking is the will of the political class to change for good..they are more than willing to change for bad and for their personal gain, but they don't want to speak anything about being united.
