Felt something to be missing
by Elango Narayanaswamy on Jan 25, 2009 03:56 AM   Permalink | Hide replies

Saw it on the first day... you would be moved by a good movie, you would have scenes/situations to remember to recollect… none of this happened to me at least.

Ok, there is lot of discussion on what kind of a movie this is…lets take those.

A hardcore realistic portrayal of poor India:
It does not fit in hear. You would have had many points by now to go against the word “realistic”. May be the things shown about the slum life is true but mixed with lot of other unrealistic aspects removes the overall realism from the movie.

A spellbinding fiction with an Indian slum touch:
This would be closer. But, for a fiction I would expect more ‘wow’ scenes, scenes pushing you to tears or engrossing script/screenplay.

No single emotion carried through the movie nor was any single emotion defined. One main thing that runs across the movie, the lead pair’s love, even that did not reach me.

And for the music, it’s great but not his best.
I did not find anything that justifies a 10 Oscar nomination movie. Yes we can be happy for Indian(s) making it big globally. But how they managed it is not clear. I think this movie would help in understanding the long debated credibility of Oscars.

I would compare it to a “Bhelpuri” made with 80% correct ingredients without any salt!!!

HELLO ALL THE READERS
First try to erase the news about awards to SDM. Now see the movie. This movie has lots of good points. Struggle of a small boy. Direction...etc etc.. BUT....BUT... What message you get when you walk out of movie hall is?????????????????? What things keeps on running in your thoughts??????????? what indirect subconscious message enters our brain???????????? FILTH POVERTY GUTTERS CHILD EXPLOITATION SEX BHAILOG... EVEN BAD PART IN CHARACTER OF ANIL KAPOOR GIVING A WRONG HINT (THIS WAS NOT EXPECTED IN MOVIE!)..
Getting award is really great achievement. But this movie is a brain child of outsider about India.. It is English movie dubbed in Hindi. Agreed our politicians are not doing any thing for the slums... agreed its a reality.. But do we need to enlarge it? And enlarging it will help to reduce it? Also why showing the Internal problem to other countries in Glorified way? I feel its our own foolishness that we Indians are happy for getting award for this movie in west which is showing negative things about our country. If you think about the performances, no doubt they deserve what ever the nominations etc etc.. BUT THE SUBJECT PROBABLY HARMS INDIA MORE THAT IT IS GOING TO BENEFIT.
I STRONGLY RECOMMEND ALL THE READERS TO SEE THIS MOVIE AND DECIDE HOW YOU FEEL AFTER THE SHOW.

Oops!! I come from the exactly opposite school of thought :)

"Erase the news about awards to SDM" - this is easier said than done! All talking about it, 3 nominations for a Indian in Oscars, etc etc.. one cannot remove off the movie... After all this, when one sees the movie most of them would see whether suits the hype, the awards... etc..

"Indian would be harmed by what’s shown in the movie"
The world , India is too big to be affected by a movie... can you think of a tangible damage this movie would create? As such do you think people in the west think of the metros they think about India? do you think they think about infosys, pubs, multiplexes, bandra.. etc...? sorry that’s not the reality... most of them think still we are snake charmers!!! Its my personal experience... few know India through metros... many know through books , discovery channel or the beggars, traffic jam, theft, autowalas in the tourist destinations... The point is – the present image is not dignified, yes you may say that this movie would affirm or worsen things, but I feel the international damage delta would be negligible... but for we Indians it would be a big time REALITY CHECK...

"the movie deserves the nominations for performance...etc etc"
What performance? Whose performance.. Try comparing it with crash, million dollar baby, TZP, Anbe sivam, etc etc

As a pure movie review - THE movie is GOOD not GREAT

As a pure nationalist thought, We should not allow these Britishers to make movie highlighting the worst part of India and if this is not enough, the movie is being awarded left and right. Because of these awards people are going to see atleast once! I would say, we should ban this movie in INDIA.
This is like making a movie involving British actors having made sex legal below 13 years and showing it in worst ways and giving them awards and showing all over that country, spreading indirect message that whole country`s population is involved in sex since they are 13 years of age. And do u feel they will jump in joy to get awards like we in India are jumping with joy now for SDM? This shows character of the Indian population. Given this, what can we expect, from ages on, then to be slaves of Muslim attacker, European settlers, and now Islamic terrorists.!
