As far as I understood Vajpayee's speech the intention is to declare existing institutes as IITs. I see this simply as a step to score election points, and fail to see any intention of creating quality institutes.
I would rather have more competing quality institutes that can give IIT folks a run for money than see these IITs-in-name.
And then we all know "naming an institute does not an IIT make".
I think that if government starts building more IIt's then IIT loses it's place and would be just like a regional engineering college, just another engg.college in the corner, moreover i think that instead of building more IIT's govt. should give funds to upgrade already made IIT's to international standards ,because it's not the name only that matters but the engineers produced by IIT's matter.government will also not be able to find that class of faculty which is at present in IIT's .
I don't think we need more IIT now .Instead we need to improve the standard of present IIT's by evaluating the teacher performance twice a year and judge there promotion accordingly .Also the number of seats should be increased for each department for all IIT .
Long overdue. Trust the govt. and the relevant educational authorities take care to maintain the high quality of technical education, though.
A country of India's size and human potential definitely needs lot more quantities of high quality engineers, technocrats and scientists.A decade of econmic reforms and open economic policies has opened up opportunities and areas which were not available earlier, high quality engineers are definitely reuqired to service the opportunities and fuel it further.
Quality people wont comeout if such things happen.
I am from A.P.
In our state, government relased more and more engineering colleges. Now the outcomes are wandering on roads.Goverment is not showing any responsibility on this.
definitely increase in no. of iit's will bring down the quality of input to these institutes of international fame.as i myself is an 3yr b.tech elec engg student at iit madras ,i am well aware that the faculty of rec's and other colleges is noway comaparable to iit profs.increase in no of iit's will serve no purpose rather tarnish the fame iit'ians have earned over decades all over the world.
REC's have their standards and values all over the world. It's better if we upgrade Other Universities like Anna, lucknow,Osmania, etc Universities to IIT's so that there will be more quality educational centres in India.Alos REC's are standardised to NIIT's and so they don't need to be again given IIT standards.
No we do not need more IIT's. It is an institution meant for smart students who are to be taught by really smart Professors.
There is no need to increase their number because in any case the student will get into the NIT (changed to IIT) due to his low rank in the entrance test. The only thing different being he will be now called a graduate of IIT- Warangal/Trichy/Jaipur or whatever.
The result being the whole brand value which IIT's have established all over the world and the image of IIT grads goes down. (I am assuming students from NIT /IIT to be not as good as from established IIT's in general, this might be a totally wrong assumption.

Don't be so judgemental on other people capabilities. Do remember a fact also,Around 2000 people graduate from IIT every year and all do not end up doing great. There are more unsuccessful IITians than successful ones.An IITian tag cannot take a person long way its just his/her attitude and capabilities and it varies from one IITian to another.IIT's are no doubt good but same is not the case with IITians(It depends on the individual). Because to be a success you need more than just skills of a good engineer.
