It is absolutely unnecessary in terms of diluting the standards and of course there is no such need also as already the vaule for engineering education is reducing and this increase in number of colleges will further worsen the situation.
Every year many students appear for the JEE (Joint Entrance Examination). Many of them are capable and very intelligent. It is just one moment at the time of examination that they feel nervous. Due to this, they get little less marks than they ought to have. This little less makes a huge difference. I know at least 8 people who studied for IIT-JEE with me and who were very intelligent and 'the expected', but they couldn't make it just due to 1 or 2 marks.
Having more IITs will solve their plight.
Though the new IITs will take some time to gain reputation, that time is worth waiting for!
RECS are having campus interviews only, not participating any active research work. the quality of a technical institute can be improved with a good faculty only.without creame faculty elevating recs to iits merely dilute the status of IITS.
I dont at all agree. The 7 IITs we have are enuf for the techonological prowess of the country. They are known for the cream of the students that come in and the best of the facilities and Superb faculty. We cant achieve all this by creating new IITs and btw did ne one think of the funding for these wannabe IITs
Taking into account the phenomenal rise in our population and percentage decrease in open category of admissions avaliable now as compared earlier. In 1970,s an above average student could get admission into an IIT with 1 year prerpn now even the genious has to slog for 2 yrs.Because no new IIT has started after late 1960s.
I am an IIT alumni. IIT's have a prestige, not only in India but more so abroad. IIT graduates are looked upon with respect. In fact, there have been some recent articles that compare IIT's far richer institutions such as Harvard. This respect has been earned based upon the curriculum, facilities, faculty and above all the caliber of the students.
By increasing the number of IIT's and the number of students, the overall caliber of an average IIT student will go down by 50%. We would now find twice the number of students, half of which would have never made it to an IIT earlier.
I never heard of anyone saying let us create more Harvard's, Princeton's, Cambridge's, Cornell's. Why IIT's? IIT's are supposed to be the best. By increasing the number, you bring down the standard of the best.
Why is so much of hype created for IITs. Are engineering and medicine the only courses in the country? I agree that engineers play a vital part in the economic development, but what about other professions? We have good institutes in Accountancy, Finance etc that are comparable with IITs. There are still good professions like chartered accountancy, actuaries, pharmacy, etc to name a few. Government can as well improve standards for these courses to make them world class.
And moroever IIT graduates are in no way useful to our country, since most of them migrate to US and other countries for cushy jobs and directly lending a helping hand in technological progress of those countries. Take the mentality of any typical IIT graduate. He only talks in dollars and not in rupees. This shows the typical selfish attitude of an IITian, who is bothered for his own wealth creation. How many IIT graduates after studying in US and working for few years have really returned to India. A handful of them.
Though IITs have their own high standards, I strongly feel that brilliant students from other reputed Institutes are also making a mark in their professions.
The precise reason why IITs produce gems is their being few in number. Over the years the tag has become synonymous to quality 'coz of the work done by the alumni. An institute does notbecome entitiled to the same respected just by being named IIT. In fact, we may risk diluting the image.
Offer the best facilities to the other institutes, call them whatever; RECs or GEcs...... and if they show the results, we;ll probably have them as respected as the IITs.
Do not play with the IIT tag, concentrate on improving the learning conditions and u cannot stop the best brains in the country from flaunting their genius, whatever tag they may sport!!!!!
i myself am an iit student. and we entered in iit after crossing a barrier of jee the toughest one
if the no. of students being selected is increased then what will be the reputation of this exam.
already we have increased seats result is that the atmosphere of iits is being spoiled.less hard working and repeaters are entering the iits and they become careless by considering that job is sure and they dont study .when they join a company there performance in technical works is bad and they spoil the image of iits.and now if we made 5 more iits then what will happen we can imagine
