I am an IIT alumni. IIT's have a prestige, not only in India but more so abroad. IIT graduates are looked upon with respect. In fact, there have been some recent articles that compare IIT's far richer institutions such as Harvard. This respect has been earned based upon the curriculum, facilities, faculty and above all the caliber of the students.
By increasing the number of IIT's and the number of students, the overall caliber of an average IIT student will go down by 50%. We would now find twice the number of students, half of which would have never made it to an IIT earlier.
I never heard of anyone saying let us create more Harvard's, Princeton's, Cambridge's, Cornell's. Why IIT's? IIT's are supposed to be the best. By increasing the number, you bring down the standard of the best.
